Hi Everyone,

Ear ruptured again last night just got back from Dr. and he wrote a script for 5 percocets. (bad ear infection feel like my head is going to fall off) I'm scared to take one. I haven't had my sub does yet today. I'm still on 8 mgs. a day and usually take 4mg around 3:00ish and then the other 4:00 around 8:00 pm.

Any suggestions? I had the same ear problem in the same ear a month ago and was given coeidene I took that right away and didn't get sick on it. Any suggestions? I really need something for this pain.

Well, Beebah.... i'm not a doctor... but I don't think the percocets will get thru the suboxone "blockade" at the dose you're on for maybe even 3-5 days and that is if you stopped taking the sub now. (my best guess)

I know this ear thing is not something you could plan for, like a major surgery. So it stinks to be in pain.

The half-life of sub is about 36 hours - means that 36 hours from the time you took your last dose, there is still half in your system. But that's not the only thing. The OTHER thing is that all the doses you took on the days before are still "stacked up", working off THEIR half-lives. Sub "sticks" really tight to the brain's receptors so that it's difficult to get any effect from opiates. (Part of the deal!)

I have heard some say they got SOME relief taking pain pills while on suboxone but I'll bet it was the tylenol portion working.

It is one of the downsides of sub. It is REALLY hard to find an oral medicine that knocks the suboxone off the brain's receptors. If you were in a massive car accident or something, they'd try override the sub with very strong IV meds, but those aren't going to be given for this condition.

Now, I've read on the naabt.org board that splitting your dose more thru'out the day without increasing it can help more with pain. Like 2mg at a time spaced a few hours apart?

You may just have to rely on OTC pain relievers like aleve, ibuprofen, tylenol, etc. I am so sorry for your pain.

I do feel for you.

I know that the ear must hurt like hell, but how about other non-medicine remedies? (Like heat, etc. ) I don't know what's appropriate but you could try talking to your doctor or if not, try googling it and see what info you come up with for pain from ruptured eardrum......

Sorry couldn't be much more help.

Sue

Beebah emptynester said it all.

As far as taking sub and pp, I will ask the same question as I did before, or make a comment.

It is best that both doctors know what is going on. I think you said and correct me if I am wrong that neither knew or just one did? I understand why if you haven't told the doctor you are in recovery, trust me I do. But at some point you need to get that ear taken care of is what it boils down to.

My sister and brother had horrible ear problems and they passed it along to their kids, if that is possible. I was bypassed thankfully. I do know the pain it caused them. They had to have surgery, and/or tubes in ears.

You in my opinion are asking for trouble, I am surprised that the pharmacy filled it knowing you are on sub. Not sure what state you are in, but most states have this program that is new called the pms. Each time it is reported if your state has implemented it. This could land you in a heap of trouble unless both doctors know what is going on.

What matters is, if you are having ear problems perhaps going to a specialist to take care of the situation at hand.

I can tell you this, taking sub along with pp may help with pain, or it may not, like sue said, it could be the tylenol in it. I would be so afraid without my doctors knowledge to take both. I let him drive the SUV.. hate the word bus lol

I hear people say that you will get sick taking pp while on sub, not true for the majority. All this is coming from my sub doctor who is a specialist.

I have been off sub now for around 7 months. Was on it a year.
