In many states nursing boards have started nurse assistance programs to address substance use disorder in the profession. These are Alternative-to-Discipline Programs that offer support and monitoring to help nurses return to work sober and safely do their job. Basic requirements include counseling, drug testing and worksite monitoring. Programs vary by state and are called by different names.
