|I DO NOT SEE HARDLY ANYONE COMMING OFF OF METHADONE. I WAS ON METHADONE FOR THREE YEARS, BEFORE THAT I WAS TAKING PAIN PILLS FOR 3 YRARS, NOW I HAVE BEEN CLEAN FOR ONE YEAR OFF OF METHADONE, I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE ELSE THAT HAS CAME OFF OF METHADONE SUCCESSFULLY TO HEAR THEIR STORY, I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW I AM NOT STRUGGLING ALONE TRYING TO GET BACK TO NORMAL.

|I'm sure someone with experience with methadone will come along shortly and help you but I just wanted you to know that being clean a year is so awesome! How did you do it?
And, what do you mean about a normal life? What really is normal? What's going on with you now that you're clean?

I personally know someone who has come off methadone. Being on it for 3 years was probably difficult...this guy was on it for 13+ years and on a high dose. It took 3+ years doing a very slow detox but he did it. While he was detoxing and during the time he was almost finished was probably the hardest time for him.(Dropping too fast and for the wrong reasons is the biggest problem and why most people fail.) But you cant take too much time to get used to the drop and how your body feels before you drop again. Once he got to the end it took a few weeks more to really feel better. All the methadone myths aside, there is a part of methadone ,I think, that helps to mask slightly some of the minor aches and pains we may have,plus the energy "lift" you get while taking it. THOSE are the hardest side effects to overcome.
Plus, the longer the patient has been taking it,the harder and longer it may take to detox from it. Someone thats been on it for 2,3,5 years will have an easier time than someone who has been on it for 20 years,I'd think, but all these ideas are just my personal opinion. They make sense to me but because I personally have never detoxed off methadone I don't really know for sure and everyone is different. I also think that the more "damaged" the brain is from years of using the more likely that person is to fail a detox attempt after being on methadone maintenance for many many years. Heck, ya gotta have 2 failed detoxes before you can even go on methadone........
So....yes I do believe one can detox off methadone and stay clean,but not too many folks try it and sucessfully succeed.

|THANK YOU MS. COWGIRL FOR RESPONDING. YOU ARE SO RIGHT WHAT MIGHT BE NORMAL FOR ONE PERSON MIGHT NOT BE NORMAL FOR OTHERS. MY NORMAL BEFORE I CAME OFF METHADONE WAS GOING TO SCHOOL, DOING EXTRA CURICULAR ACTIVITIES WITH MY KIDS, I WAS ALWAYS GOAL ORIENTED AND HAD BIG PLANS FOR LIFE!! I GRADUATED A PRIVATE MEDICAL SCHOOL AS A AOS MEDICAL ASSISTANT WITH ALMOST A 4.0 AVERAGE, ISTATED TO WORK, WELL LETS JUST SAY THE METHADONE STARTING TAKING A TOLL ON ME, I WAS BECOMMING PARANOID ABOUT EVERYONE AROUND ME, LIKE I WAS HAVING A NEVOUS BREAKDOWN, I ALSO WANTED TO COME OFF OF METHADONE TOO, SO I STOPPED TAKING IT, THE NEXT DAY I HAD A PSYCOTIC BREAK, I DIDNT EVEN KNOW MY NAME, MY HUSBAND TOOK ME TO THE HOSPITAL AND THE HOSPITAL SHIPPED ME TO A PYCH WARD, THERE I THOUGHT PEOPLE WANTED TO KILL ME, THAT THE DOCS WERE TRYING TO KILL ME WITH THE PSYCH MEDS THEY HAD ME ON, I EVEN SAW ON TV THAT MY HOUSE WAS BURNING DOWN, IN WHICH IT WASNT, ALTHOUGH I AM DOING BETTER MY CONGITIVE SKILLS ARE TERIBLE, I AM A COLLEGE GRADUATE AND STILL AT HOME, NOT FEELING SORRY FOR MY SELF BUT MY BRAIN WANT ALLOW ME TO DO ALLOT OF STUFF, I CANT EVEN SPELL WORDS LIKE I USED TO,IFORGET WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT, FORGET WHAT I AM DOING, SO NOW I AM STARTING TO DO SOME YOGA, AND EATING AN ALL PLANT BASED DIET, TAKING A MULTI VITAMIN, THE ONLY MEDS I AM ON IS CELEXA WHICH HAS MADE ME GAIN 50 POUNDS SINCE JANUARY AND TRAZODONE FOR SLEEP, I WANT TO COME OFF OF ALL MEDS AND START A NATURAL APPROACH. I WOULD LOVE TO START TALKING TO PEOPLE THAT ARE RECOVERING ADDICTS THEM SELVES INSTEAD OF A DOCTOR, I THINK THAT COULD HELP ANYONE WHETHER YOU ARE AN ADDICT OR A RECOVERING ADDICT, ALSO THANK YOU FOR BEING SO NICE TO RESPOND, THE WORLD NEEDS MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU!|
|Posted by: strongwomen29 October 17, 2012, 4:40 PM|
|THANK YOU GRANNY 23 AND YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING, THAT IS WHY ALLOT OF PEOPLE RELAPSE BECAUSE THEY ARE TIRED OF NOT FEELING THE SENSE OF WELL BEING THAT THEY USED TO HAVE, AND MAY NOT HAVE IT AGAIN WE AS ADDICTS WILL NEVER BE RECOVERED,BUT WE CAN HAVE A CLEAN LIFE FOR OUR CHILDREN AND FOR OUR FAMILY MOST IMPORTANTLY OUR SELVES!!

|Hi, I was on the methadone maintenace for many years and finally got off of 95mg cold, I ended up in detox for over two weeks, and then to a rehab for 30 days, I feel so much better, and yes you can get off of it, you cannot die, but you get very sick, I faced it and I lived and its great not to have that demon everyday looking straight at me, good luck god bless, mike|

I AM SO GLAD TO HEAR FROM SOMEONE THAT HAS CAME OFF METHADONE!! THAT IS REALLY AWESOME YOU DID AND I HOPE YOU ARE DOING WELL!! HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR YOU TO GET BACK TO ENJOYING LIFE? AND BEING PRODUCTIVE AGAIN? DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE?
|Posted by: Moveon November 21, 2012, 8:39 PM|
|Does anyone know of someone who has died from getting off methadone
by going down fast and staying off all opiates? If so, what was the situation if you know. I want so badly to get off 100 mlgs as soon as possible. I am taking multi vits., Amino acids and I put together all the ingredients in a product called Puridone. Thanks
|Posted by: moveon November 21, 2012, 9:48 PM|
|Oops, let me rephrase my question: Does someone here know of anyone that died in the process of getting off methadone? If so, what were their circumstances? I am on 100 mlg. and want so badly to get off this stuff asap. I know I will be in so much pain, I'll wish I would die, but could I actually die?|
|Posted by: Granny2 3 November 22, 2012, 11:42 PM|
First of all whats the rush? Why do you want to get off methadone?
While I don't think you would die,you'll probably feel like you might which in most instances the person gives in and uses to stop all the sickness. (And,I guess you could die,if the person was very ill from other things and in an extremely frail condition. But that is probably very rare,but folks can get very ill from continued vomiting,diarrhea & dehydration which could cause a lot of serious concerns.) There is no need to be that drastic.
If you are really ready to be detoxed from methadone you need to do it very,very slowly.That is the easiest,most comfortable way. Again depending on what dose you are on, a couple mgs every 2-3 weeks would be good. Alot of the withdrawal is psychological. The longer you have been on mainteance and the higher your dose the longer it takes and the harder it is. The first 1/2 of the drop shouldnt be too bad but as you get down lower it will get harder.Of course you can drop faster, more mgs, more often, it all depends on you and your own tolerances.
Again I ask, what is your hurry? Finances? Pressure from friends or family? How do YOU feel about it? Are you doing well,have you been staying clean? That is what matters.Nothing else.
Do you have a counselor at your clinic and have you talked to him or her?
Come back and talk to us.

|HI SWEET PATIENCE,
I AM SORRY YOU FEEL SO BAD. I TOOK OXY CONTINS FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS. THEN I WENT ON METADONE TO GET OFF OF THE OXYS, I WAS ON METHADONE FOR 3 YEARS. THE STRONGEST MG I EVER GOT TO WAS 50, THEN A THERAPUTIC DOSE OF 28. iT WAS VERY HARD COMMING OFF OF METHADONE, AFTER YOU GET DOWN TO 30 MG IT IS VERY HARD. NO ONE AT THE CLINIC TOLD ME IT WAS VERY HARD TO COME OFF OF WHEN I SIGNED UP FOR IT, BUT I DECIDED TO COME OFF OF IT, I HAD KIND OF A NERVEOUS BREAKDOWN AND THEN I DECIDED TO STOP TAKING THE METHADONE, AND XANAX I WAS ON. I WAS HOSPITALIZED IN A PSYCH WARD FOR ONE MONTH. I WENT COMPLETELY OUT OF MY MIND COMMING OFF OF IT, BUT I KNOW A LITTLE BIT OF IT WAS MY NERVEOUS BREAKDOWN TO. THEY AUTOMATICALLY PUT ME ON PAXIL, HEART PILL AND KLONOPIN, WHEN I GOT OUT AT HTE END OF DECEMBER MY BRAIN STILL WAS WEIRD. I STARTED FEELING BETTER IN FEB 2012. THE DOC PUT ME ON CELEXA AND IN OCTOBER I STILL WASNT HINKING CLEARLY, I HAD NO PERSONALITY STILL FELT DISCONNECTED, SO I DECIDED TO START COMMING OFF OF IT, I STARTED FEELING BETTER IN NOVEMBER, I WILL TAKE THE LAST 5 MG OF MY CELEXA TODAY, I FINALLY FEEL LIKE ME AGAIN, A YEAR LATER, BUT DRUG FREE, AND HONESTLY I FEEL THE BEST I HAVE EVER FELT. I REALLY DONT KNOW HOW LONG YOU WILL FEEL BAD MENTALLY AFTER, IT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU WERE TAKING HOW LONG YOU WERE ON THE MEDS, AND YOU AS AN INDIVDUAL. I CAN TELL YOU THE PHYSICAL SICKNESS WILL BE GONE IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS. YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO THIS ALONE. IF YOU HAVE NO CHILDREN I WOULD CHECK MY SELF IN REHAB OR A PSYCH FACILLITY FOR A WHILE. MY EX HUSBAND TOOK MY KIDS FOR A MONTH WHILE I WAS AT THE FACILLITY. THIS MESSAGE BOARD IS GREAT, PEOPLE WILL HELP YOU ON HERE, BUT YOU SHOULD GO THROUGH A MEDICAL DETOX. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS!!!

|I also would recomend a med detox. I was on methadone for 3 yrs and i totaly can relate. Withdraws are awful but keep on telling your self that you only have to do this once. Do you have a support system to help you? You could try going to NA thats how i stay clean. Just a suggestion. I know how you feel and your not alone. Im here if you wanna talk email@example.com|

|Hope you made it off methadone (but if you did not, don't be too hard on yourself and try again). After some time of opiate addiction, I was on methadone for about a year, tapered down but, even so, took about 6 weeks of clean living to start normal feeling. I walked alot during that time cause I couldn't sit still and certainly could not sleep. Thankfully, I was able to get massages and acupuncture throughout the detoxing weeks that helped somewhat, doubled with determination (very important).|

|daughter has been on methadone for 5 yrs , why is the state not bring her off of it|
|Posted by: Granny2 3 December 12, 2012, 12:19 AM|
|There are no state rules or laws as to how long someone can be on methadone. It has a very good success rate if used properly...by itself with no illegal drugs. And that all depends on the lenght of time a person abused opiates,and their age when they stop. Opiates reek havoc on addicts brains and their ability to make natural endorphins,the longer you use,the less you have. Sometimes they are depleted forever. Methadone provides what the brain needs without the high, and enables the person to live their life without opiates.
Some people need to stay on methadone longer than others, sometimes for the rest of their life. If one is doing well, as in, not using,is working being a good parent, and being a productive citizen while on methadone ,whats the rush to be done with it?
All methadone providers have rules to follow as required by their state but most all decisions are made by the clinic doctor. Whta is most important is for the patient to get to a dose that "holds" the patient, meaning, if they use heroin they don't feel it. Everyone is different. It is NOT a one dose fits every person. If the patient follows the rules of the clinic and don't use you can live a life witout drugs. Monthly counseling is required by ALL accredited methadone clinics and is part of the healing process.
Your "best thinking" got you here. Now it's time to listen to someone who might just know a little more than you do.
Good luck.It does work.......

|10 maybe more years depending when i count from 9 year methadone script and now i just take it as and when needed, normally 50 or 60ml about every 8 or 9 days i could stop but ive been of heroin for 8 years and its my safety net.im only in my 30's o ive spent more of my life addicted to something that not 2013 however will be different i got myself a good team of workers the top drug doctor in the uk backing me up pushing me to be a drug worker i went into so many rehabs and detoxs without success im pretty much the go to guy for there clients,you can read as many leaflets as you want but there no substitute for experience,i want to scream sometimes when I see people in a rush to come off methadone,dont rush that s*** your going to back at stage 1,LISTEN TO GRANNY,she's got it together,I will always back methadone and methadose programs,it saved my life,and i dont mean that as a figure of speech,I would be dead,im actually on methadose its 10X stronger than methadone so instead of 100mls its only 10mls but you dont want to be leaving any drops in that bottle every ml is equivilent to 10mls so i use me a baby medicine shringe to suck it up.
I take a little methadone in the morning others have coffee its not a problem unless people make it a problem,i just wish people would stop thinking methadone is just pharma heroin because its not,i was on diamorphine amps for a few years used to think i was lucky that was untill i tried a detox from it,think H is bad think again methadone hmmm maybe about a 1/4 of the symptoms,i ended up on Pharma smack for harm reduction,beleive it or not in my area of the uk it was easier to get Pharma smack than methadone,i cant thank god cos he didnt do it but whoever stopped that did the best thing ever for a lot of addicts in my area.
Methadone programs =GET YOUR LIFE BACK.
I appologise for my shabby gramma but im on my phone,I know i dont post much but im always lurking,Happy 2013 everybody the myans were wrong,but hey the economys going to get better right?,,bahahahah gotta love fiat currency especially if you print it.
Good luck to everybody still fighting it,your day will come we all get a chance the trick is to see it when it shows its self and grab it, and when it does you dont look back just grab that chance and run with it.

|Well its not a success story just yet- - and maybe it should never be considered one
I was on mdone for 25 yrs- -I was thrown off my klinic about 3 months ago- got back on and missed 4 days in a row ,so I was thrown off again- - all this happened because after that damn hurricane& I lost my take homes , couldnt find them them for 2 days ,then when I did- -they took them all away- -
So then I was going to CT so often I started missing days - hell I was used to having bottles (120 mgs)
Finally I got on in CT- they put me on 40 mgs- - after a week or 2 ,I walked off of 20mgs-
Now its beeen about 2 months and I havent been on any klinic- -I havent done any dope- - BUT>> i HAD TO get a script for time release morpine pills- -they ran out about a month ago , and I havent done anything since- - It has been !!!>> I can barely walk, stairs are a real b****- I certainly cant work yet and Im thinking about temp, disability-'But Ive come this far ,getting back on a klinic isnt an option--Putting up with the leg pain is probablt the worst- -I am prescribed anxiety meds , and they help a bit- -
Jeanie is real supportive and that helps a real lot- - I havent gone to any meetings recently, but I have started to go to church every Sunday- - It must be the Catholic boy in me that reconizes that I need some type of hope and spirituality--never mind a little faith that I can do this-
I am under no pressure to stay off- - I just want to- -I still fight for every patients rights to be treated fairly without the stigma that I had to put up with for yrs- -Opiate replacement therapy is not a bad thing- if the alternitive is using heroin--so I still keep myself available to others that might need some advise- - even though the ct klinic doesnt like it to much>>but F-em
I can say a lot more but Im not good on this laptop and Im
in a hurry to get to shoprite- -we have 3 cats and a dog that are going crazy --time for breakfast- -man it gets expensive to feed this animal farm
Ill try and continue this story later
with much love

|I do know someone who got off methadone after close to 15 yrs on it and at a pretty high dose.
He did it VERY SLOWLY over a period of about 3 yrs.
He has been off it totally for about 6 months and is doing real well.
After dealing with a few medical issues,not caused by methadone, but after coming off of it, he is now doing quite well and we are all very proud of him. And HE is feeling quite proud and amazed too.
It CAN be done, IF its done RIGHT. Most people get this hairbrained idea to stop for stupid reasons, with no plan and usually after they have only been on the program for a very short amount of time. The idea is to get some clean time,straighten out the mess your life is usually in, get a grip on reality and life without using.
AND THEN,with your counselor and your doctors help you can begin a VERY SLOW detox.
Then you may have a chance at success.

|OK- No more klinics for me
Doctor in CT has given me a script for methadone- -3 -10 mg pills every day - -(30 mgs a day)
Its great not going to a freakin klinic even if it was once a week-
-I had to get them for pain ,gettin mdone from a doctor for addiction is illegal
Every thing else is going pretty good- - Life has changed sooo much in the last 5 months , it really is unbelievable- -
Hope to work with this doctor to taper off the 30 mgs within the year- - hey I was on 100 mgs only 6 months ago , who whouldve thunk it- -
Still on unemployment, Huskie health care is taken care of all medical expences- Need to see a neurologist , leg pain might be a nerve issue--we,ll see- -
Hope everyone is well

|I HAVE COME OFF 300mg a day habit! Its been 6 weeks, I went into a treatment center cause the physical and mental withdrawal made me want to kill myself. But i feel amazing right now. I have a new attitude. I want to live! Just for today I know I will stay sober!!! One friggin day at a time. Get treatment, its worth it. Go to the right place and work a program of change. Get support, go to meetings, get a home group, talk to people. You can not do this on your own, the want is greater than you.|

Wow!!! Congrats!!! We need more stories of success like yours!!
You are so right,it takes change to get better and to stop listening to ourselves. We are our own worst enemy.
Keep up the good work and keep posting here. We need to hear from people like you so other addicts can understand that methadone is a great tool to use to end their addiction to opiates.
|Posted by: jdm4given March 5, 2013, 3:58 PM|
|I too was addicted to opiates. I was a heroin addict for 2 years and oxycontin for 6 years before that and alcohol. I have been clean for 2 years and just discovered possibly the best thing for my anxiety that caused my addiction besides prayer. I started taking a vitamin B suppliment called Niacinamide "non-flushing" 500mg not to be confused with Niacin. I take 4 a day. It took a few days for the calming effect to begin to work but it does now.It is a natural herb containing vitamin B-3. It was widely made known by one of the founders of AA and he claimed it cured his depression. The people who developed the drug Valuum, the benzodiazapam, used the chemical structure of this vitamin as a guide. This stuff has truly helped me in my recovery and my well being. There are many studies on the web and forums with success stories. Having taken about every drug out there I can honestly say that Niacinamide has the calming effect I have always been searching for without the "narcotic" feel of synthetic drugs. Best of all, a one month supply is 4 bucks and it's a VITAMIN. Crazy, i know. I too used to meet someone with a bunch of hundred dollar bills to "feel good" now I look to God and His natural cures. Obviously, you will not get the flooding of the senses like you do with eating 10 hydrocodones or shooting heroin but slow and steady wins the race. If you are truly looking to feel good naturally, I have found that this vitamin works wonders. God bless you.|

|I am off it now, its been 7 weeks. I feel horrible but I am working a program and getting therapy. You can do anything. It is possible. One day at a time.|
|Posted by: Granny2 3 March 17, 2013, 4:44 PM|
|to jdm4given and xLittleAnimalx,
Thanks you two for adding some positive thoughts and comments to our site!! They are greatly appreciated. Methadone can be a real life saver if the addicts will just give it a chance and be serious about their recovery.
Anything that helps along the way,vitamins,natural supplements,etc, those are welcome too.We sure dont need folks to get a handle on one addiction and add another one to it, that's for sure.
Anyway, welcome! Hope to see you around soon! Does anyone else have experience with the B vitamins?

|on 2- 10mg methadone pills a day still>> This is getting mentally challenging- Back and leg pain being helped by physical therapy= = its a long process- Doctors are impressed that I havent regressed- me too- - -
Arthritis in the spine is not an easy pain to deal with- - Could it be that after 25 yrs on the klinic drinking about 100mgs a day covered up much of this pain??- -maybe -maybe not- -
Anyway- hanging in there- -Not being on a klinic and changing life style in Connecticut is a positive - -
Being honest- -there are days I feel like taking much more than 20mgs- -but then the script would run out, and Im pretty sure I would resort to the street-- - getting too old for the street game and the sure trip to Rikers that would follow when Im caught
If I can do this after all these years ,I think anyone can- maybe by end of the summer it will be over- -
NA meetings help sometimes- -other times I feel like they are a waste of time- -Worst is not being able to work- -to much time in pain not being productive-
Just keeping in touch- - hope everyone is well

Ya know I think the 120mg you took very well could have covered the pain. Everyone i KNOW THAT HAS DROPPED DOWN TO A VERY LOW DOSE HAS HAD PAIN ISSUES. tHE ONE GUY THAT TOOK THE 2+ YEARS TO COME OFF 300+MG( stupid cap lock!!!!) had to have surgey to repair discs and stuff once he stepped off but now he is OK. Didnt even know he HAD any problems.
Even my husband. He is down to 19 I think and he has a hard time evry day with very low energy and cant seem to get past it.He refuses to go up to where he'll feel better after he has gone this long. He wants off still, but is taking his time.
They say kicking heroin can be brutal,dependant of course on how much and how good,but it doesnt last as long. Now they say methadone is not as bad,BUT, it takes longer. The trick is to DO IT SLOW. If you dont give your body time to catch up between mg drops you will be uncomfortable. Even the Doc at my clinic thinks 2 mg a week is good. NOT. Of course each person is doifferent, but if you did a Mg a month I would think you would fare much better. Of course it would take a lot longer, but whats the rush??
Glad you are hangin'.
|Posted by: B-Dubs April 11, 2013, 3:24 AM|
|Ok, firstly, congratulations "strongwomen29" on 1 year out of the vicious cycle. I was an IV heroin user for 7 years (the most degrading and depressing years of my life). I got off of heroin using methadone. I was on 140mg. of methadone daily for 4 years, until I got sick of being a slave to the routine of robotically getting up early and traveling to the methadone clinic for my fix. I freed myself from that slavery 9 years ago. Life has its ups and downs, but I never have to look in the mirror and not recognize myself. I can be proud of myself today.I have accomplished so much without drugs. I am a substance abuse counselor now and in school for my master's degree at 46 years old. I love life now and you will too...you are doing well.
Secondly, answering a different question: It is extremely difficult to die from an opiate/opioid withdrawal. Most deaths from withdrawal come from alcohol and benzodiazepines and other pills, especially when taken in combination.
Lastly, I thank God for methadone, it saved my life and the lives of many others. Many people stay on methadone for a lifetime because nothing else worked for their pain. They are on a pain management track. However, many doctors who prescribe methadone do so unethically and should be arrested. They are supposed to ween people off after a while, but they continue for the business.
Thank you and great luck!

Here is the latest diagnosis>> After many tests, 2 months of physical therapy , assorted medicines - - Doctors have come up with" Peripheral neuropathy ">>>from what I understand this is damage to nerves of the peripheral nervous system, which may be caused either by diseases of or trauma to the nerves- -causing then to become frayed-
They told me that YES- certain drugs can cause this -
- for instance >my Mom, was on some kind of cancer drug for 5 years- after she got off it, she found that she had developed Peripheral neuropathy - They will do more blood work to rule out sh8t like diabetes ,,etc,,, but I was told that there is a good chance that by being on mdone for almost 25 yrs- -at mostly over 100mgs a day, could've hid the pain of my arthritic back, and the fact that there is herniated disk in my lower spine
It also is heredity , so with a couple of uncles ,cousins, and my mom, all suffering from similar issues , this also plays into the problem.
I still take 2- 10mg pills a day. However, apparently that isn't enuff to relieve the pain, let alone get rid of the pins &needles that is constant in my feet. I will not go back to the klinic in NY, will not start a new one in Connecticut, & most definitely not look to the streets for relief--------- so that leaves me in a position to 1)- search & search for a doctor to prescribe me some kind of non-narcotic that can help(not likely)
2)- try to convince my current doctor to prescribe a little higher of a dose, that would insure that my quality of life get better enuff for me to work, and just do the normal activities that have been robbed from me
- -- - 3)- Do nothing, suffer in silence. Some days are better than others-
Maybe as we learn more about the severity of this , the plan will become clearer. As many of you guys know, especially you pain pill/pain mngt people, lots of doctors will try and help- BUT MANY wont- -after seeing my history of drug use, especially heroin, they automatically think that I'm looking for narcotics, to either get high or to sell.
Unfair> absolutely - - Warranted- I guess so> but I'm 55yrs old, Ive haven't used anything but mdone (and clonpin) in many yrs- - I try to explain I DO NOT want to go back to a klinic, pee in a cup, talk to dopey judgmental state social workers, then stand in line with people who love the street scene and that whole life. I want to finally remove myself from it- - Sooner or later ,Im sure something will work out , but at the moment this situation sucks
So that's where I stand- >>-As to the question" Has Anyone Successfully Stopped Taking Methadone?"- - I gotta say ,speakin for myself> no,not yet<- - I went thru all the -not sleeping, intense stomach cramps, etc..etc.(for about 2 months).. so I thought the worse was over - I lost 25 lbs and really thought -OK,now its just the aches & pains I have to get over-How was I to know the issues that were going to come up- If I had a crystal ball and could've foresaw all this ,maybe I would,nt have detoxed so fast- -I wouldn't recommend going from 120mgs to 30 in about 2 months- -Im quite lucky that I made it this far without winding up in a hospital -
Thanks for reading this ,I know its more about me than any kind of advise- - but I guess I needed to see where I am - and by seeing that in writing , it kind of helps me by reminding me of the progress in the last 7-8 months

|I had been on it for 7 years..and I am terrified to come off of it... I heard and read how hard and horrible it is when you are withdrawling from it. I am nervous b/c I don't want to feel all the bad things everyone is saying. I'm just looking for some people to talk to about it b/c nobody in my family knows I am on it. I am at 120mgs and have been for the past 6 to 7 years. So anybody have any suggestions?|

|Hello and welcome! If your on 120mgs I would not just up and quit. I used to be a heroin addict and then was put on methadone for 3 yrs. It helped me alot in finding ways to cope with getting out of all the madness I was in but it to got old . This is just my opion mind you. You should talk to your doctor and do what is best for you. As far as my detox went well it was s***ty no doubt but I didnt die and today I go to NA and live a happy life most days. W/Ds don't last forever and everyones detox is different. I went to treatment for 2 weeks the first 7 were the worst of it the rest was tolarable but expect 20-25 days of being bummed. It can be done though Hugs.

I met my now husband who doesn't do any drugs when i met him i was at 70 milligrams I am now down to 45 as of Wednesday today is Friday so it has been 3 days since my last decrease & physically i feel fine so far i've been coming off of it slowly for the past 6 months i am beyond ready to live a long & healthy life with my husband and soon hope to start a family. my stable dose was 55 milligrams but i am so scared of what's ahead of me mentally i know after a couple weeks physically I will be ok i have had so many different people tell me so many different things i just want someone with experience to help me i need to know what milligram i should stop at can someone please help me?|

|Just for my benefit...and to whomever...I was on OxyContin for over 2-3 years, then Vicodin, then methadone along with many others in the mix (soma, flexeril, ultram, Percocet, Xanax...etc etc) and I have been sober for 3 years. It was NOT easy, but it can happen...and yes, even as I'm typing this..I do have some thoughts of "I wish I could have one more" but to be honest, once you get over the "hump" in detox, it's almost like a brand new way of looking at things...you really look and say to yourself "why did I even bother taking those?!" Just in the same manner as you do while taking it and saying "how can I NOT take these". I've had issues with the law, family, money and even employment all due to these damn drugs (ie prescription pain killers) but in the end, it's almost a new high being without them. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't easy, but it CAN AND WILL HAPPEN IF YOU WANT IT. The slow detox is best, but I found that if you keep some around, and abstain from it as long as possible, I mean until it hurts...BAD...then take as little as possible to get by/sleep...then last as long as possible and rinse and repeat. It's not easy like I said, but it works...I'm proof.|

|Well, hey Jack. I must say I am saddened to hear that you are still going thru so much stuff. I was hoping that maybe you had finally got on a clinic, at least for a little while on a low dose,just until you could get your surgery out of the way, then when you aren't in so much pain you would be in a better frame of mind to really do a good detox.....but you are a stubborn butt. Kidding, really.. I am glad Jeannie is there for you.
You know yourself, what you can and cant take. I am pulling for you and I am glad to see you here as we need your advice and input. Like I've said I am SO far behind you in knowledge.I am 100% behind you my friend...I wish you the best.
Have you read the posts from Eckie and Bob????(Dirty Dingus) I was so tickled to hear that Eck finally got on methadone and is doing so well, he says, and Bob sounds good too. Makes it so worthwhile to hear someone finding the way to being clean after struggling for so long...warms my heart.
How is your son?? My Gkids started school again yesterday after being out for 17 days. I miss getting to sleep in:(
I just got this dumb new tower up and am figuring it out. The programs are SO different! The last computer we had was like 6-7 years ago..ALOT has changed. Right now,even on maximum screen this thing isn't much bigger than a regular 8X11 sized piece of paper, but its better that not having anything.

I was on methadone for eight years, four of those years at the methadone clinic and most of that time I was on a dose of 120 mgs a day. After trying unsuccessfully on my own to quit, I went into treatment and they detoxed me for ten days using librium. It helped tremendously to get through the roughest part, but I still had to suffer tremendously during and after the librium with a lot of muscle pain, inability to lie still, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, and depression. I made it through it though, and every day it was just a tiny bit easier.
I have ninety days free from methadone and all other drugs now, the aches and pains are long gone and I can lie still. Other than a rare night, I sleep fine. What has helped me the most was a combination of getting on the right psyche meds for me, a combination of antidepressants and a mood stabilizer, and getting into recovery. I attend NA meetings daily and they have been a HUGE help with the spiritual emptiness I felt without methadone. I also take suggestions and am working a program.
It has not been easy, I've had to work very hard but today I feel alive and energetic without drugs. I will say I did not feel anything approaching normal mentally until I finally reached around ninety days. I really cannot imagine staying clean without attending narcotics anonymous meetings, but that's just me. I wish you the best of luck. Stay strong and don't be afraid to ask for help. Quitting methadone, or any drug or combination of them requires outside help. I wouldn't suggest trying it alone if you want to succeed long term.

|Thank you everyone for their posts. They are all so varied reminding me of different times in my life. I was down to two ten mg a day and i too had lost my mind for the third time when i finally admitted my seven year addiction to opiates and self medicating plan with methadone to a psych ward i was in for 12 days. They quickly detoxed me from my twenty mg a day. Like in 4 days. The leg pain was unbearable plus i was restless so i continued walking the halls for what felt like forever. After 12 days passed i was released and had the same feeling of disconnect and wobbly hands and still leg pain. After two weeks i went back to the streets for mdone. I took only five mg a day to be functonal physically and mentally. My psych meds help i believe im finally on something good for me. The past 5 days i have been drug free and suffering. This message board has made me feel so much better in finding hope and realizing i should go to some meeting or clinic so help relieving the loneliness i feel battling this in secret. Im actually hiding as i type this and i am 31 years young. Hiding! Im so tired of it. Like i said this message board helps me realuze i dont have to. Im going to talk to my psychiatrist about drug rehabilitation group or na classes this week. Thank you|

I am really happy to hear that you have found this site and that it has helped you. That is what I wanted, for folks to come here, to read, write or whatever and to get good honest information.
Please continue what ever it is that is keeping you from using or wanting to, because it CAN be done, you just have to want it bad enough.

|3 years addicted to hydrocodone. Then just over 3 years at a local methadone clinic. Looking back if I would have known then what I know now about methadone I would have tried harder to detox a different way. With that said I also know that methadone saved my marriage, family, job etc.. Long story short I only got as high as 55 milligrams a day for about 1.5 years and the. Started a slow titrate over the next 1.5 years. Once at 6 mil I stopped going to the clinic and finished titration on my own. Taking 3 mil for 2 days then 1 for a couple days and then none. I had a small reserve in case things went south. I too read all the forums about how people could not get off and the ones that did struggled. Days 1-3 pretty much easy 3-6 the worst but manageable with mild aches and stomach issues and sleep deprivation for about a week then the sun came out and with the exception of a few minor discomforts I now have been drug free for just over 3 months. This can be done. There is hope just keep to the taper I did 1 mil a week sometimes 2 when I felt it was too slow. You just have to really want to be done and free from the chains of the drug/ clinic. And take some responsibility in knowing you may feel crapy for a few days but you did it to yourself. I wish everyone the best of luck and I am always willing to talk and share anytime.|

Yours are the kind of good stories we need to have on this site. To know that methadone helped you to get your life back on track, off of opiates and then you made the decision to SLOWLY detox off the methadone. GOOD FOR YOU!!!!
I wish everyone did it like you did instead of rushing and then failing miserably and then going out and getting high again and having to start all over.
You had a good plan and you stuck with it.
Please come back and let us know how you are doing. We need more positive stories about people who have used methadone the way it should be and take responsibility for their actions instead of blaming all their failures on the methadone and /or their clinic.
There are those who, unfortunately, who are not able to only be on it for a short while and need to use it forever. And there is nothing wrong with that either. It is all dependent on their drug history , drug of choice and length of their addiction.
Again, thanks for your story.
|Posted by: Sky4all May 31, 2014, 1:46 PM|
Thanks for the words of encouragement and support.
I would also like to add that I did not go through this alone as my wife was also addicted and her story is almost identical with the exception of her doing a more rapid titration sometimes 3-4 mil a week and stopped all together at 4-5 mill. She had about a week of feeling like crap but still was able to work everyday. I attribute a lot of my success to watching her and finally seeing that it is possible to get off completely and with minimal discomfort. She came off 3 months sooner than I and that as well was a motivation for me to kick it in gear and get it done.
Another thing I wanted to mention was, we both took a vitamin supplement called " vita done" 3 times a day ( and still do) that was available to purchase through our clinic. They help at great deal with energy and overall well being.
Once again I'm always available to talk and share with anyone that may need it.
|Posted by: Granny2 3 May 31, 2014, 7:40 PM|
You are indeed one of the lucky ones to have a loved one doing the same treatment as you and you both sharing the same end result.
After many failed attempts , detoxes and whatnot I knew methadone was what I needed to stay clean and I have not used once since the first time I dosed. That was 20+ years ago. My husband on the other hand was a bit more resistant but once he saw how it helped me and how it changed my life he went on it as well.
We are advocates and volunteer at our clinic by chairing a once a week recovery meeting called Keys to Recovery. I also write a newsletter for our clinic meant to educate patients and their friends and families on the good methadone can do if the rules of the clinics are followed.
There are many recovery options available and it is a decision that can only be made by the individual. I have heard of vitadone but have never used it. It seems the cost was a bit pricey for most. If it works as many say it does it should be at all clinics, for sure.
good luck and keep coming back.

|I'm 39 and am doing probably my 20th detox and everyone of them has been different. I am an extreme addict addicted to many things my whole life. Got clean at age 32, stayed abstinent for 3 years due to N.A. Then relapsed. Have been on 50ml a day plus using a lot on top. I left town a week ago and decided to come down 5ml everyday and its the easiest one I've ever done. Still got the last 5 ml which will be the hardest. But everyone is different, and for me every detox is different, none pleasant! Granny was bang on with what she said. And its all subutex now and I can't get me head round that, always makes me cluck. Btw the few years I was clean were best of my life by miles. X.

|I'm off 60 mg cold turkey for 35 days.
But I went to the ER twice.
First time I had to be in intensive care 2 days.
Blood pressure went to 230/108. Extensive vomiting.
I'm a 58 year old man.
I'm getting better every day.
I'd be dead if I was in jail.
Got darn close anyway.
If you are young take your freedom back now.
If you're older be careful.
I mean everyone be careful.
It can be done. Just make a plan, and emergency plan.
Be ready to be out of circulation for 8 weeks at least.
I am going to go to at least one year program.
You know we don't do this crap because we're happy.
I know I do, and suspect others are like me.... we turn it all inward....
Subsequent self destruction follows.
I know now knowing that cannot help by itself.
We must understand... I must understand.
Under-Stand. Stand under it and look up. Then the option to rise above it may be revealed.
|Posted by: Glenn June 6, 2014, 9:58 AM|
|One more thing.
I can see just staying on it if that was necessary.
But I'll tell you the clarity of mind is amazing when you start getting well.
My experience of the physical world, the sheer dimension and clarity of thought......
I mean that just cannot be denied.
Problem is that I forgot that in that hazy, filmy sort of state that is opioids.
They kill the pain, for a while. A short while.
After that then I don't go any deeper, and cease to inquire and grow very much.
I've learned and grown more in 7 seeks than the last 5 years.
While that stuff controls you, I don't think you can get anywhere near your true potential.
Pain? Oh yeah.... freedom.....OH YEAH!

jumping off at 55mg's will probably be a bit uncomfortable. I would go back to the clinic you were on and get back in the program. Why did you leave one and go to another??? It seems there may be something else going on but only you know what that is.
If you were doing well, then get back on and continue your fight.
good luck to you sweetie!

|Yes I have successfully stopped, although I was pregnant at the time. I was prescribed methadone at a pain clinic years ago for what they originally thought was MS, but since turned out to be Fibromyalgia. It took about 3 months to taper off 30mg I think. The last 2 were the hardest, bc the doc could not give me anything to ease pain or anxiety.
After I had her and was done breastfeeding I went back on, and she is now 19. Ugh!! I have tried a couple of times to begin a taper on my own, with no success, because it stopped working on pain years ago. My dose has been 30 for a long time.
I am HAPPY to have assistance now, and am tapering. I'm at 20mg
Have I ever gotten into abuse trouble over these 20+ years, yes. That's why I am here.

|You can and I did nearly die from abrupt methadone (or other opioid/narco in quantity) cessation.
Following treatment, I learned that a past death in the family was due to abrupt methadone withdrawal, a situation nearly identical to mine but never revealed.
I lost six months of my life to methadone. I was "forced" into taking it as a med break from other prescription pain meds. I have little to no memory of the entire time I was on methadone, and those close to me were reporting bizarre behavior. The folks who came into my home while I was in treatment were utterly shocked by the living conditions - it took two weeks before I could safely return. My entire life fell apart in irreparable ways. I took 60 - 180 mgs/day for a period of six months (as well as frequently overdosing due to mental incapacitation), quitting cold in April 2011 and entering treatment three days following cessation. Based on my methadone dose and prior script pain med dosages, the doctors were stunned I hadn't experienced some kind of major repercussion that could have proved fatal. It was later determined that there had been seizure activity and that I probably suffered one or more strokes of ? severity.
As I said, the treatment docs were stunned and beyond concerned with my abrupt cessation. Believe it or not, I was the one that stopped the meds. I'll never be clear on the specifics, but apparently some deep self preservation part of me kicked in. When I called my primary care physician - who had put me on the methadone - as to what to do and how to stop, the response I received was: "We don't know." It was four long, painful, tortured, DANGEROUS days until coordination with a recovery specialist took place and I entered inpatient treatment.
(Each experience is unique, but for me, I was able to "detox" in a week and have remained off all opiates, narcos and benzos. I remain on 3 mg/day of suboxone in hopes it will provide some measure of pain relief. I feel very fortunate that I have never missed the meds and never felt a need or desire to have them back. I will say that I never enjoyed the "euphoric" effect of these meds, and after the first few doses, didn't experience any euphoric or other mentally satisfying effect. Also in my favor ? perhaps is that I carry the "anti-addict" genes, meaning a genetic resistance to becoming physically dependent or addicted. In fact, when it was realized that I was not chemically dependent and did not experience noticeable or measurable withdrawal after four years of significant prescription pain med use, I was placed in a study regarding same. It should be stated that by the time my doctor forced the methadone on me, 7 years after beginning the meds and three years after joining the study, I was extremely chemically dependent on a number of meds.)
I say I lost six months, but really I haven't ever been the same since. I can't focus, memory's shot, health is poor, crazy sleep problems, blurry vision and as yet undiagnosed neuro issue, muscle weakness, numb spots, all kinds of nasty reminders.
My take away from all this would be to recommend professional treatment or at least oversight if at all possible when stopping methadone use. Remember that even if you don't have a doctor or can't locate or get into a treatment center, you can always go to an emergency room or urgent care center. They can and will provide short term treatment and ensure your safety until you can enter a treatment program or are well enough to be safely discharged. You do NOT need medical/health insurance to receive care/treatment. (You WILL, of course, likely be billed for these services, however there are many programs that can relieve financial burden. At the very worst, you'll survive to file bankruptcy.)

I have been going to the Methadone clinic for 3 years asked my councillor to transfer me to a clinic in Minot, ND she told me she did I drove 718 miles. for my husband work she called me Mon mornin after I took my last dose and said welI've made a mistake. There on no clinics ND. I was on
190 Mls, there was absolutely nothing I could do but kick 190 MLS of methadone and no doctor would even see me out here cause I was on methadone its been 2 1/2 weeks I feel horrible ay I had no sleep the last 3 days and I am usually work2 job, clean house I mean anytime anything I would always be up.early and jump right out of bed I can II can't seem to shake the feeling of absolutely exhausted thing any help, I can't get any doctors to help me with any scripts for the anxiety I feel or withdrawal from it, so any advise I would love.

|I can also say the hospital here told me because I was on methadone they couldn't even help me in my deepest darkest moments of withdrawal, not 1 medication would they give me by the way I am doing this alone all day 15 miles from a town in a camper trailer my husband is gone 14 to 18 hrs working.|
|Posted by: Granny2 3 June 26, 2014, 6:52 PM|
That doesn't seem right. If you had gone to an emergency room they should of helped you. I am so sorry you are having to go thru this. It seems as though you are past the worst part of it if its been 2 weeks or more. . Do what you can to treat yourself symptomatically, Tylenol for aches and pains. Baths for the restlessness and make sure to stay hydrated and eat, etc. even if you don't feel like it or want to.
I have not been through what you have but I know people who have and they say while it really sucks for a while, it does get better with time. That is a BIG jump off that you did but if you are still hanging, you should do OK. Being where you are living might be a blessing in disguise because, I am assuming, you are not where drugs are readily available which you may have been pushed to use to help not feel what you are going through.
They tell me not sleeping well lasts for the longest time and the lack of energy. Those too will disappear in time.
Are there any towns nearby that have a clinic? Most small towns don't have clinics, just bigger ones. I am sorry you didn't check that out for yourself before you made the move and it was really irresponsible of your counselor to do what she did as well.
Since you have come this far just take it one step at a time, try and keep yourself busy, if you can do a little work then do it, if not, do the best you can. Make sure ,like I said before, stay hydrated, eat, and each day will get better. Use Amodium (sp?) if you have loose stools, hence the need to stay hydrated and hang in there. Hopefully some other people from this board will come and add their experiences and suggestions for you.
You CAN DO THIS, even though I know this wasn't what you wanted, but until you can figure out something else this is what you have.
keep the faith and hang tough. If you didn't read the post right above yours from Dingo. You can go to an emergency room. I would call your clinic, if you left on OK terms and ask them about what help emerg rooms can provide.

|Hey there! Man oh man i feel your pain. What a trooper, i probably would have moved back. Over 100 ml to just stop taking it sounds rough! But hey you seem to be through the worst of it if you gone past 2 weeks. It slowly gets better everyday now. Here is where is be all be mental. your brain needs more time to heal. I do know that clinics will NOT transfer you. Even when i was with the same doctor, and same clinic i had to do the intake all over again every time i transfored. And one time i was told i had to wait 2 weeks to even get in. Then i went to the er, but i was given a script for like 20 pills to get me through those 2 weeks. Not sure why the er didn't help you. I have heard only certin doctors can prescibe them idk? Anyway hang in there, it will get better. I will bump a thread called PAWS for you over in the pain pills board it's a good read. It might explain what your going through. Every person is different so this will take time. Try to do as much as you can during the day so you can sleep better at night. It can be done! Good luck.
That thread is called Your Brain on Opiates

|I have come off of 140mgs cold turkey after 5 years of taking it. If I had the choice at the time, I would have been on it for the rest of my life. I went to jail for a ticket and stayed for a week. After that week, I felt worse than I ever felt in my life. I still decided I would not go back. It is now a month and a day later and I still feel like crap but I know it will only get better. To say that I could do it again would be a complete lie. I know that if I don't stay clean, I might never have the true luxuries in life. When I stopped, I didn't have any meds whatsoever. No stomach meds, no blood pressure meds, no anxiety meds nor headache medicine and as much as I felt like dying, I didn't. I was taking every type of pain pill for years and went to iraq with the army. When I stopped pain pills, I had to train daily in the summer which made me sweat it out quicker. It was a hard thing but not anywhere close to methadone. If you do come off methadone, I hear it is good to taper your dose but no matter what you do, you will have to hurt. The key is to put vitamins back in your system, eat good, exercise and find new hobbies. If you keep it in your mind that it's going to get better and put your mind on things you used to do, you might just make it. Don't think it's going to go away overnight because you will get discouraged. Methadone did save my life from the needle but I wish I had never got that far. It's by far the hardest thing I've done but the reward is well woth it. I hope my experience helps. I always thought I could never do it but here I am. Good luck|

|Hi, my name is Melissa. I was reading everything on here and thought I should post as well. I'm 23 years old. I'm currently on 4 mg of methadone. Detoxing 2mg every 4 days. My highest dose was 84mg and that was over a year ago. I've been on methadone for almost. 3 years. I did everything but crystal Meth. I have a horrible history. Grew up in a horrible home. Abusive step father, a mother never there, never meeting my father until I was 18 and that was only for 5 minutes. Life has been rough for me. Even tho I'm young, I've been thru a lot. I have received so much help from my grandparents and friends.. I currently had to move back in with my mother and my older sister, who is an addict as well.. but a lot worse then me. I haven't used any drugs, other than being on methadone in over 2 years. But now that I'm detoxing.. I'm scared of how that's going to change.. with my sister using, being in a bad environment. Drugs around.. and having no other family. To "help" me I feel as if I'm stuck... my detox from methadone was easily. Until about 2 weeks ago.. now it seems the withdrawals have caught up to me along with my depression. Its hard. And at times I want to go back up.. but then I read comments like the ones from above and realize that its worth it. All good things in life don't come easy. I start college on August to become an substance abuse counselor.. I want to give back, pass along all the help I received.. Just wanted to say.. you are not alone, you are beautiful, and you are loved. Keep your head up.. like I read earlier.. you're day will come. Much love. ♥|

|Believeinyourself and suspect,
I am glad you are both finding help on this site. Congrats to you both for how far you have come. But
Please don't think of it as a failure should you decide to go back on methadone or going back up on your dose. It is better than ending up back in the addiction trap heroin can cause. Its better to make a mistake and fix it and try detoxing again later down the road than to give up to the addiction.
There is no shame in relapsing. It happens to the best of us, but if you are still on your clinic talk to someone before that happens! Talk to your clinic counselors about how you are feeling.
hang tough, I know you can do it!

Wow, sorry for what you have gone through, but it is SO NICE to hear someone say that methadone helped them and that with the right frame of mind and a plan you were able to get off it and have an opiate free life.
I wish more people would see and understand what you did and use the program the way it was intended.
Bless you and thank you.

|I have been a heroin addict for about 9 years off and on. This last time my habit got so bad that I found myself sleeping in a car and begging for change.
I managed to get into a methadone program, I went for 9 months but missed a lot of days and continued to drop dirty for heroin. I while back I had to sign something saying I wouldn't miss any more days or drop dirty or i'd get discharged. I managed to get clean shortly after with the help of Narcotics Anonymous. I started to get a little recovery in me and lost the cravings for heroin.
About 3 weeks clean from heroin I woke up too late on a Saturday and missed my dose of methadone for Saturday and Sunday. If not for what I had learned and my change of mind I probably would of used that as an excuse to use, even though I didn't get too sick that weekend I almost expected to.
Well for missing I got administratively detoxed from 110mg, they lowered it 4mg a day.
I quit going after my 10mg dose because I felt to go any longer would just delay the inevitable.
Today is Day 5 without methadone and it has been pretty crappy. I wouldn't say the withdrawal is worse then Opiates but it definitely lasts longer.
I can't recommend anyone just quitting cold turkey from methadone without having your dose lowered for as long as you can. This can be dangerous, they say you cannot die from the withdrawals but I believe people with certain health conditions probably could, they won't ever kick out a pregnant woman on methadone because it's dangerous for the baby.
I'd say I am an advocate of Methadone to those who want to truly quit using but if you can and are able I'd recommend going cold turkey or go to a short length detox center. At the very least see a doctor and get Clonadine and whatever they can give you because sleep is almost impossible when I'm withdrawing, which is the worst part.
Most importantly is to learn about recovery after you do get clean, to prevent a relapse.

|Its been a few days.. I went back up to 12mg.. my detox has been paused, and I'm feeling better. Its rough. Like everything else in life. I talked to my counselor and with myself starring college in 24 days she wants to switch to subotext on Monday, the only day I go to the clinic. I'm eiffy about it. She says it will b a lot easier with school and work.. and I want to get back into my own place so I figured it could help.. I ended up taking a Valium on Monday, my stress level was at an all time high.. I actually got high off of it and then felt horrible for it.. my tolerance used to be so high, not any more. Would any one like to share some pros and cons with me about stating on methadonead getting off of it and then getting on subotext and detoxing from that.. I would appreciate it. Methadone has done so Much for. me.. and I have accomplished so much iin tye last three years but i think it has served its purpose. compl|

You sound similar to another poster...( If you are the other poster, WBequette, I am glad your detox was stopped so you can figure out what you want to do.)
I too am an advocate for methadone and I wish there were more of us here on this site. Have a plan and when and if you are ready follow your plan.

|I bump into this sight searching for help getting off methadone. For those of you on higher doses God bless you. I can't even comprehend what you are I during. Yes. I'm a grandma. Approximately 11 years ago I saw a pain doctor who put me on methadone to relieve my neuropathy pain. Honestly, I was clueless to the the hell hole I was walking into. It wasn't long until I was taking more and more. The jerk doctor fired me after getting me addicted/dependent. It's all the same to me. By the grace of God, I found another doctor in town to keep me on my low dose. He wants me off the methadone and tries to force me to take Lyrica, now rated as another addictive drug. I do not live near any places that can help me get off, so I'm having to do it by myself. I'm not sure I can do it, because the pain gets really intense. I went through instant withdrawal once when one of my doctors gave my Nubain, another type of pain killer. Let me tell you that was a sight to see. A fat old lady flopping around on a hospital bed half naked, because all I had on was a hospital gown. They didn't know what was wrong and kept giving me moraphine trying to calm me down. It felt like my blood veins were on fire and my skin was frozen solid. I accidentally kicked one of the poor nurses in the head. All that said, can anyone render some kind advice to get off this stuff. I could honestly shoot the doctor that got me on the stuff, but he's got enough trouble chasing him it would make things easier on him.|

|I was on Methadone for 13 years. I got on methadone at 18 years old and now at 31 I decided to call it quits and try to get more healthy. I never let myself go above 50mg unlike others who are well above 100mg a day or so. Over the course of 2 years I gradually went down to 5mg and said forget I'm done and Im now on day 7 without any methadone. I have tried before to get off at 40mg and that was the worst pain "well I cant say in my life" but it was very very bad and even after a week I still felt like crap. As of right now coming off 5mg its not so bad. I have slight muscle cramps and sleeping is a challenge but nothing not even compared to coming off at 40mg. I have read over and over again 40mg or 5mg it don't matter you are going to hurt. To a degree that is true. I do hurt, but nothing like before. I still go to work everyday and even do three classes a week at school. Its been a little though but I think; NO! "I know" I broke the chains of methadone and so can anyone. I takes allot of time to taper off I know, but today is a good day to start. I have other health issue I need to take care of as well and methadone was just now in the way. Im glade you got off Methadone and I hope all who see this will too be inspired to try it this way. Very very slowly. Not 3mg a week or 1mg a week. Try going down 1mg a month till you feel like it is no longer holding you and stop the 1mg detox and wait until your body regulates itself and it will. Then resume the progress there after. I was scared to death but I turned out for the good and I now thank methadone for getting me off street drugs and living a progressive life and now it is time to say good bye. But if anyone would ever ask me if they should try methadone treatment, my answer would be NO. Its hell to break free from. Try soboxoen or hang out for the 4 to 5 hellish detox of what ever opioid drug you are on. Its much shorter than months.|

Just a quick one. I used to be on 50ml now come off at 13ml. PLEAAASSEE anyone thats over 25ml. Gradually reduce down. It can be a unpleasnt withdrawal but dont listen to horror stories as u reduce say monthly ur body will adjust. Just remember make urself comfortable by having hot baths listen to music that will relax you.
I PROMISE YOU that after a month free detox ull feel much better. It sucks but keep warm and takr on day at a time. Eat more protiens, veg, milk thistle, and drink plenty of water to flush toxicity out your system.
If i can help please feel free to get in touch. Wishing all the best during difficult timr.

|How are you getting on melissa??
|Posted by: suspectdj August 13, 2014, 6:10 PM|
Different ways of getting through withdrawal. It lasts two weeks max aslong as you eat more protienveg fruit and exercise drink plenty of water to hydrate yourself.
You taper to what you feel most comfortable at. I thought the withdrawal is guna happen anyway so why piss about. That was my decision to come off at 13ml from 50ml at reducement of 5ml monthly and that was enough for me to adjust. Im now two half weeks into free methadone.
Still getting sneezing fits, tiredness but it will pass. Looking back im glad im off it.
Seek doctor advice about pain meds for withdrawal. Diazepam workd best for me.
You can do it......if you want it bad enough!!.

|Hi, I successfully detoxed off of methadone after 11 months in the program. It was difficult but if there is anything I can offer in regards to my detox it was that keeping my mind positive was the biggest part of it. I listened to a lot of music, I stretched as much as possible, I laid in the bath, the pain my body felt was excruciating, but it didn't matter because I knew that eventually it would be over, and that I would be on my way to drug free. I flushed my last few doses down the toilet and knew once that happened that I didn't even need to look back. I started suboxone after 4 days of detox, and was on suboxone for 3 months, and slowly tapered myself off of that. It's all in our minds, if we believe we can get off of this poisoness life-saver, we can. Please feel free to reach out. firstname.lastname@example.org

|I was just going through a mental freak out myself today, wondering if I can ever truly recover from opiates and methadone for good. wondering if my body even has the capability to recover with time and work, and i stumbled on these postings. I rarely go online, I've never posted anything before but feel compelled today. I have battled opiate addiction since she 21- I'm 36 now. It began with heroin and has plagued me off and on for years. I stayed off heroin for 7 years but just moved it to pills. I had clean time here and there but it never stuck. Took suboxone for a year and successfully got off that. I swore I would never touch another opiate again but surprise, surprise, I did. I went back to oxycontin and then back to heroin. I never thought I would use needles again but never say never as an addict. So, for the past 4 years I've been on methadone. I can honestly say it's the most productive I've ever been but the cost of it and the awful way it's dealt with in my state-as opposed to California where i started treatment- had prompted me to try to get off slowly but surely. plus, i just want to be me, without all the side effects. I began at 95 mg. I am now at 27 but it's getting much tougher. I am a woman and I work a very physically laborious job. The further down I go the more I feel the pain of work. I know the further down I go the harder it's going to get and I will need a leave of absence at the end. I hope like hell they'll understand and grant it to me without losing mmy job. That's the part im really scared of. So I was looking for others who have made it off this medication. If there weren't so meant downsides I may consider just staying on for life but that's not an option. It's good to hear some success stories because the physicians don't really know what it feels like. I wonder how long it will take to get my energy back and how I struggle through this until the end. Im still ok, just wake up sick, my dose no longer holds, and Im in physical pain quite a bit and the depression and outrageous anxiety are their own little hell. It's good to know though that this is a situation that can be overcome|

|Hi all, my time on pain meds 16 yrs, after several back fusions and being sole provider for my family i used 100mg methadone for 12 years i thought i was doing fine but new i was dying on inside, wife left children not talk much to me was tired alot, not much sleep, so i went to detox for 7 days withdraws were intense,was completely off for two months no energy felt like i was dragging around a pair of concrete shoes. talked with my doctor i went back on 2 mg per day and still on this I come to accept that it will take a long time to stop all together. It has been 9 months and I am starting to rebuild my life completely its the hardest thing i have ever had to do, I took meds as labeled doctor who gives me methadone plays down the affects my other doctor is so proud of me she says that it will take a yr or more to start feeling better,one thing no one has mentioned is the depression and all other forms of what this and all meds cause it was my choice i blame no one but had i known what was in store for me when i started i would have went a different route. I know there is a time and need for meds .best advice to get past the worst is exercise strength training at least for me it is the hardest drug to kick as i have been told it gets in our bone marrow and really messes with our brain.I have found out that talking with other people who were like me with them talking about wanting to end it, letting them no they are not alone and to share my story with them helps me stay on my path. so much more i can say no. offence to anyone out there it is just my story|

|To everyone who is successfully detoxing from methadone, good for you!! We are getting more stories in the past month or so that we have since this board was added. People need to know it CAN be done and that the program will and does work.
It is a very personal decision to start methadone as well as detox from it. From what I understand it does take a while, from a few months to a year or more to get entirely off it, some people take longer than others dependent on their doses.
Then it takes more time to be totally free of its affects because it was replacing the endorphins in your brain, something your body lacked from the years of your opiate addiction.
There are a few people who have been nice enough to tell us what they did, personally, to assist in the detox, from foods, to drinks, to exercises to vitamins, all of which are good ideas whether you are on methadone or not.
The main thing I want to emphasize is to make sure you do the detox for #1, the right reasons and #2, to do it the right way, just to make your long term success more likely.
Meaning that you didn't detox for your mother or your wife or whomever, that you did it because it was the right time, your treatment was complete and that you discussed this with your counselor and your doctor. And,
That you did it in a safe, slow medically directed way. Your chances of success are much better that way.
For those of us who are still on methadone and may continue to be on it there are reasons why we choose that, just as there are reasons why you want off of it. Please make sure your reasons are valid.

| comming off methadone, i was on meth for about a good 7 years of my life. i wanted to get off i was on 100 mig and i started going down three mil a week, luckly for me i got down to thirty and i went into a pain clinic and they gave me all kinds of pills fentenyl patch i was really bad on pain pills i got addicted of course i was taking more than i should have.and i didnt think they were working, well i slept all day because no one was home, and i didnt want to be around anyone. i used herion once and they urined me that day and they found a big amount in me and kiced me out of the pain clinc with nothing i dont know if that was a good idea giving someone all that medication and then just kick them out of a pain clinic. i was totally messed up now, i had nothing and i knew i was going to be sick so i went back to herion and then i couldnt take it anymore and signed my self into a rehab. i was back up to sixty mil of meth oxicotten, fenanyl path 100 milg. and sixty of meth. and a habbit of herion i cleaned out my savings. after that i knew i couldnt do it. well i came out and jumped into aa meetings, though i wasnt an alcholic i liked it better than na i dont know why. but it did save my life. i made a yr today off of everything i use to do.

|Just to start your posts have helped me. I am down to 20 mg today . I am also 7.5 months pregnant. I refuse to have my baby addicted . I know what the books say..doctor say..and so on..but I have to do this.before you say it..I know I should have stopped before getting pregnant but I wasn't trying to get pregnant. And I was on birth control. It happened and I had many complications at the beginning and read if I was gonna detox now would be the time so here I am. I just need advice!. Help with withdrawal. .things I can take over the counter that are safe ..please...I need support and help|
|Posted by: Granny2 3 September 24, 2014, 2:52 PM|
reading your post got me a little freaked out.
PLEASE, PLEASE don't detox right now. I get how you feel but being so close to delivery you are just asking for complications and heartache. Your baby will be fine after birth and detoxed in a very short while.
It is MUCH safer to continue your methadone then to try to detox right now. Don't you want to enjoy your baby's birth or do you want to feel sick with withdrawals?? Detoxing will be even harder on your baby because you are detoxing so close to delivery. If you had done it sooner you may not of even enjoyed your pregnancy because while detoxing from methadone can be successfully done it still can be uncomfortable while you are doing it, especially once you get to a certain point.
Please talk to your doctors again and think about the baby. There is NO SHAME in having your baby born being on methadone. Think of what you'd be going through if you got pregnant and were still using heroin and in the midst of your addiction. You made a great choice to get your life together and stopping your addiction by choosing methadone. Why go against what everyone is telling you is the best thing for you AND the baby??
good luck to you sweetie.

|My husband had been on it for over 40 years he came down 3 mil a month. And is now off of it for over a month . Not sure if it's mental or not but says his skin burns can't take noise , he dropped about 40 pounds . I would think after a month he would be feeling better. He stays in his bedroom with his door shout and locked away from the world around him. This has been this way now for over 20 years I thought when he got off the meth he would be better but I haven't Sean that yet. I hate living like this with 3 living Childen and 12 beautiful grand kids you would think he would see how blessed he is. But no he doesn't his life is all about him and his needs .i have wasted my life waiting for him to get better . So those of you who are on it please get off as soon as you can don't be a fool and waste your life and the lives of people who love you this is not living|

|I actually got off m-done! I was on a ridiculous amount in the early stages 265 Mgs of liquid from the clinic. After years and years of everyday use and abuse of m-done and Xanax.
I tried cold turkey, I tried rehab.. I even got thrown in jail for 3- mos, once..
That still wasn't enough, because it wasn't my Time I guess. As soon as I got out, my mind was still foggy and weak. So I went right back to the clinic got up to probably around 150 Mgs that time. I was out of jail for 3 years w/ only a couple short stays here or there. So I was on m-Done for most everyday while a free man.
Then a blessing occurred... I picked up a new charge, which ultimately got me a 5 yr sentence to prison.. After over 10 years of opiate and opiode struggles.. I was finally given a chance a sobriety. This was the only way I could do it.. I had to be taken out of the world, because it's too easy to get.. Temptation and addiction I just couldn't overcome.. I needed time to actually be sober, which I couldn't do unless I knew I couldn't get any.. In prison, there is no sign of m-done.. So I was given an opportunity at a new life! My first year, I was getting morphine here or there, but you realize it's not cool anymore.. You in the bottom of bottom prison.. The next is death!
I hate to say too much more about my story people haven't already heard.. I hated hearing these bs stories when I needed help and using. But, I wish I could help someone by telling my experience.. I used over 10 years, it was my whole life.. If you want to quit, it's possible.. The best thing for you is to start realizing that.. Your mind isn't there maybe yet, but don't ever tell yourself it won't be possible one day.. Still sober, still a little foggy.. But I'm not on anything and atleast I have that going for me. Life's hard anyway you look at it.. Atleast try it sober, then it means something.. M-done is a terrible drug, i know this because if it was really your friend. Good things would be happening while on it. I can't name one, can you?

|I have had bad back pains for 19 years. My doctor put me on Norco and slow release morphine. That wasn't working for the pain after a lil over a year. Then he put me on fentynal first 25 mg patches then to 50mg patches still along with Norco 10mg. Years of me going though withdrawals ever other day (because it was seeping into my skin to fast) I walked into the doctor crying and said I'm done with these patches! He said he wanted to try Methadone and started me On 30 mg a day and over a couple of years moved it to 50 mg a day and 15 mg of oxy. Well I'm not going to lie,I was hearing a lot about medical pot. I did a lot of research on it and decided to try to see if it would help, I tried It once. I had a doctor appointment a week later and he drug tested me because I had to have one every now and then. When I went back the next month he said I had failed my drug test with mariguana (mis spelled). So by law he has to now take me off of everything. Well I have been coming off for about year and doing ok but I have high pain days. I'm was down to 10 mg and 5mg oxy day and someone stole my meds. I was off cold turkey for 4 days then had a friend bring me 25 mg of meth, I took 5mg and now I'm completely out and i feel like crap! Actually crap isn't even close to the word. Can't sleep, can't quit moving and i have the muscle tremors in my cheeks and my ears keep moving up and down. I've got the cold sweats and hot flashes. I've for all the worse withdrawal symptoms. I'm doing this alone with my 13 year old. But my other daughter just lives at the next house down. My husband work 450 miles away and I'm depressed........VERY DEPRESSED! I started reading all these posts and it started making me feel better. So I'm now going to try to sleep. Never again will I take anything with an opiate in it!!!!!|

|I am glad to see so many new people on the methadone site, but I am a bit bummed by the number of people who have had such a horrible experience being on methadone. I have been on it for 20+ years and I have had many ups and downs in my life but I cant blame ANY of it because I am on methadone.
I have had some really bad, emotional s**t happen to me and the ones I love in the past 6 years. More I think then in my life, and the one thing that jumps out at me is the fact that I didn't use. You want to talk about "triggers" that set you off and cause you to relapse????
How about child molestation...charges of attempted rape...deaths in the family... I know in the past I would have used all of those as an excuse to run to the dealer, but it NEVER EVEN ENTERED MY MIND, except to tell people in our meetings that the thoughts just weren't there and that in recovery, IF you are doing it right and to the best of your ability, you don't have to use to deal with every day life.
If I weren't on methadone, I probably would have used, I really don't know. Every single person I know on methadone from my clinic that are following the rules,are testing clean and doing well are happier than they have ever been. They have relationships with their families again, many are working and life is good. In fact the other morning after our meeting I saw a young man who used to come to our meetings regularly and he was grinning from ear to ear.
I stopped him and asked him how he was doing. He had been living with his mom and she was against him being on methadone. He was working and paying for it himself but she still didn't quite get it and was always asking him the big question. "When are you going to get off that stuff?" Back then he was still struggling trying to find himself and here, about a year later he has 4 takehomes, still has his job and mom is good because she finally really saw the change in him, no more using and it was because of the methadone. The grinning? I said to him "it's because life is good isn't it???" He answered me with a big smile and said "YES!"
So I guess from my experience, the people who are really not ready to do the work to stay clean take methadone and that's ok, because deep down they know they need the help and they are tired of the life they have. But until they are willing to change their way of thinking about their life and their addiction nothing is going to change for them and get any better. I don't like the fact that they continue to use while taking methadone and to cause problems at the clinic and they can't seem to get it together and then they blame it all on the fact that they are on methadone.
congrats to those who use the program as it was designed, for a short or long detox or maintenance, and did as your doctor instructed. If you choose to be free of methadone that's great but please don't blame all your other problems on methadone.

|Hi granny Ive been lurking and reading for a couple days now.Thanks to what you posted I feel "brave"enough to come out so to speak.
I have been on MM for ..Im going into year 4.I have had a totalf 2 increases in that time and I haven't had one single "dirty"on my test.I have never since I started this program abused anything.For the first time in over 20 years I finally feel as if Im living (sort of will explain)
I get worried when I see negative written about MM.I cannot give it total credit for my new life,I worked my butt off too,but I do realize that it has helped me so much /Ive had time to learn about addiction.More than that Im learning about my addiction.
Like you posted...life has thrown some wicked curve balls this way too,Today being 1 week since my beloved 48year old husband passed.Im hurting like I never thought I could.My heart actually feels split.However somehow Im forcing myself to feel this and try to handle this grief in a ...positive way (if theres such a thing)All I do know is that if I use ANYTHING or drink to try and mask feelings...that what Im feeling now will only get WORSE.
Anyways I just wanted to post a positive(I hope)treatment with MM,,,Take Care And never stop educating this board...mj

First of all I'd like to say I am SO sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what you are feeling. Stay strong and look to loved ones and friends to help you through this. And you WILL get through this.
We all started using for whatever reason and eventually it got out of hand and out of our control. It turned us into people we didn't like nor want to be, at least in my case, and when we finally realized it some of us did something about it.
I am VERY proud of you for working the program as it was meant to be worked and you sound much happier. It will work and does work for those who do it the right way. From the first day I took my first dose of methadone I never used anything illegal again. (I have been prescribed medicines, codeine and the like but took them as they were prescribed.)
This is what "handling life" is all about or as they say in AA and NA "dealing with life on life's terms." Life throws things at you all the time, good and bad and it is up to you as to how you handle them.
So know you ask "Do I deal with the pain and fight my way through it or do I go slam and hide in a corner?"
That only makes you feel better for the time being because then you still have whatever it is staring you in the face along with the guilt of your "moment of weakness" because you used. It's a vicious circle.
If you have noticed good changes in your life since starting methadone and it is the first time in a long time that you feel you even have a life then I'd say you are on a good path. I tell everyone, If you put as much into your recovery as you did into getting loaded you cant lose!!!!
As I said, talk to loved ones, friends, church pastor or your clinic counselor. They say time heals all wounds. I know from experience time does heal to a degree but it doesn't mean you will ever stop missing your loved one.
Another thing I can say, although I don't know about your relationship with your husband. I assume he knew you were on methadone and if he was supportive and proud of you, how would he feel if he knew you were thinking about using or had used because of the pain of his passing? Would he be happy or would he want you to honor his memory by staying strong and staying clean?
Thank you for your kind words. I hope to see you around the board. My hope was to educate people about the good methadone can do in helping opiate addiction.
I am sending you a hug for all that you will be enduring in the weeks to come. Stay strong sweetie, I know you can do this!!

|I came across this and I abused pain pills for several years and now I've been in a clinic and detoxing from 105 now down to 15 but I'm raising it to 20 Friday cause I'm getting sick but I've went down 2 a week. My family knows I plan to quit at Christmas cause I want next year to be a new beginning for me and I need the money badly. I cry at times cause I don't want this addiction no more but it's taken a lot of patience|
|Posted by: Granny2 3 October 23, 2014, 4:31 PM|
Hang tough and you should do fine. You don't say how long you were at your clinic, that can make a difference. But if you haven't been on too long the way you are doing your detox should work. Its all about SLOW and EASY. Not too much at once, (2mg a week is a bit much if you aren't giving your body time to adjust before you drop again, hence the need to go back up,) nor too fast. Please make sure all the other things in your life are in order too because of you have lingering mental, relationship, family or emotional problems you may be asking for trouble. Once your "ducks are in a row" you shouldn't have any reason to use to hide or bury your feelings with drugs and alcohol. Make sense?
|Posted by: Papa Bear October 23, 2014, 6:06 PM|
|If you can get your "ducks in a row" then do it.
If you can't get them in a row, get to NA/AA for help like millions of others have.
All the best.

You have done what a lot of methadone patients have done. You start out with good intentions and then you rush to end it and wind up in a bad place. If you don't follow through with a well thought out plan it is going to backfire just like yours did.
Start again and have a plan. Talk to your clinic counselor and do a SLOW detox. You didn't get addicted overnight and you wont get off methadone overnight either. A slow detox is the only answer.

be done.after twenty years of trying i got off 135 in may.never felt this good and free ever.i can help.if it in Canada i can even help medically.I've just helped my wife off 150.i plan on starting a clinic on Vancouver island to help people get off methane permanently by using cbd,thc,ibogaine where legal,among other medications that are a fraction of risk or addiction than methane.there is life after this program.and to answer the question it takes 3 to 9 months just to start to think clearly.I've been there and no Dr could even imagine what we go through.and they don't care.well I'm no using addict and i refuse to be controlled by any drug,most of all methane.good luck and know what your taking.peace.THE NUT

your idea may be a good one, for those who would like to get off methadone or heroin too for that matter.
Ibogaine gets mixed reviews from what I know and have learned but if it works more power to it.
Methadone can be a very effective tool in becoming opiate free, MAT, (medication assisted treatment) for many who struggle or have struggled to stay clean. But...it is not for everyone. Many have wonderful results and thank methadone daily for saving their lives and others say it is/was the worst thing they could have ever tried. I deal with methadone patients on a weekly basis and I can say that 90% of them are grateful that clinics exist and that methadone is available to them.
Good luck with your ideas, I hope it works out. Anything that can give addicts hope to be free of their opiate addictions we need more of.

|A week ago today I was petrified because I knew that I wasn't going to the clinic in the morning for my 40mg dose. I haven't been back since last Friday and I feel good. I don't know if it was my strong will power but I did go down to 1 mg and then zero in 2009 but I just wanted off of the clinic. The rules, I couldn't go away with family.... I went back in the clinic in 2011 dec and I couldn't take the sweating, not being able to travel, going and being treated in a different way, but the physical and emotional issues from detoxing every 11 days 1mg then 8 days down 1mg..
. I hated the sweating the chills the weight gain every thing about the clinic and methadone I started to hate.
Last Saturday I woke up, I didn't look at the clock thinking I had to get to the clinic. I made sure I ate and drank liquids in case I wasn't able to the next day. But I slept. I DIDNT SWEAT. I DIDNT HAVE CHILLS! I WAS PHYSICALLY WEAK. NO STOMACH PAINS! NO VOMITING! NO RUNNY NOSE! I AM THANKFUL.
And had a headache and by Monday I was ok. Now I am dealing with the insomnia. No amount of melatonin helps!! But I did it. It has to be something that a person really wants or it was a miracle for me. That was what my friend told me. :-)
THIS IS MY STORY... I JUMPED OFF OF AT 40MG.YOU CAN DO IT. GET TYLENOL, ASK YOUR DOCTOR FOR SOMETHING IN CASE YOU feel NAUSEATED(sspelling is probably wrong) ASK FOR SOMETHING TO HELP WITH MUSCLE ACHES, ASK FOR SOMETHING TO HELP YOU NOT SWEAT. ASK FOR THE USUAL OPIATE AT HOME comfort meds. You might just need to stay in for 3 days. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!! ITS EASIER THAN A SLOW DETOX.

|Hello. I was looking for methadone advice due to i used to do perk 10. 8-10 a day got tire of running out having to buy more and when lost my insurance l lost my script which then became a huge habit having to buy double the amount so i let someone talk me into the clinic at first was because i was so sick could not bear it then as i started to feel good again which was about 45mg just like drugs u continue to increase even more i look back whish i hadnt gone further but we all know how this can be once u feel the severity of detoxification you NEVER want to feel it again so i just kept going up livingin fear that i MIGHt get sick if i didnt get enough finally stopped at 128
Stayed that way 8months was doing well only because never checked for alcohol or i never would had a weeks take home then once you get to that phase if u ever been u dont want to loose the whole week u don't havr to go to the clinic .... i finally told my counselor start tappering he did but only 1 mg every 2days at 100 mg stopped and i thought about going back after a couple days because if i fail at this on my own im loosing im loosing what i worked a year to get plus hey couls always make some money off it tappering myself when i stopped completely going i had cut my self down on my own so much the first day i missed still. Had 4 unopened bottles of 100mg each ... i literally barely took couple drops which we know prob comparably to 10_15mg when i would start get sick did this a week quite completely and took a perk 10 first night valume second and xani 3rd honestly i dont want pills my still cramping a bit feel like s*** here and there been clean 9days now nothing like coming off of pills or u juat may have want it ... i want to control my own life again....
I agree methadone saved me but u have to know when enough is enough... the clinics here dont do enough here to help they just want u coming back im assuming why largest clinic in the world u test dirty u jut loose take home privelages go to a meeting and positive for benzos just wont let u go over 70 so to me if your trying to help someone get clean u do more cut em off if they aint going to stop using thats how pep die !! It can be a life saver if used appropriately. ... so much is in your head and will power have to want to be better lives are crazy now days we all have an excuse to use but long run does it help NO it only takes pain away briefly then we have to go back to whats real so today is always a day to start one day at a time wish me luck and good luck to everyone else as well. Thanks for reading "B"

You are right, if one doesn't use methadone the right way it can be a problem. One thing people need to realize , there is no "one dose fits all". It is a very individual thing, some do great on 40, others need 100+, because everyone is different, the length of time they are addicted, how much they used, and their own individual system.
The one reason doctors will have you go up is so the cravings for the opiates is gone, it HAS to be, or it defeats the purpose. Some can stay on it for a 6 mos detox, others for life. Not very many make it the first time through.
And then there are the ones who use throughout the whole time they are in treatment. But that's another story.

|All of this stuff sound good. i was on oxycotin 160mg at worst for 5 yrs. found methadone clinic. immediately changed my life for the better. ended up at 130 mg. went three yrs. model patient but got to where i had to get a new job an pass test an u know they discriminate but just can't say it.but n the three yrs. they never once asked or tried to get me to lower dose. felt like lamb lead to the watering trough. counselors so outnumbered with patients that i would just sign an they would say i am doing well n my treatment. I ended up with takehomes an slowly cut myself back. got to 25 but now having trouble getting lower.need to stop by end of month. i will say clinic changed my life for the better but we r cash cows 400 bucks a month why would they want us to leave then they be out of business. sorry for rant but nice to talk to people that understand. oh yeah not even 40 yet hope lots of good life left

Congratulations on getting off the pills. Any opiate addiction has its own set of demons to overcome, some worse that others. I am also glad you had success from being on methadone, but I think you are unfair to blame your clinic for not hounding you to lower your dose or not encouraging you regularly to get off of it altogether.
Recovery is a very personal journey and while some addicts are able to go through a shorter methadone program than others the decision to detox is one that should be that should be made with the help from the clinic doctor and your clinic counselor to achieve the best outcome. Doing a slow detox, a couple mgs a month usually works by giving your body time to catch up especially as you are getting down to the single digits. Make sure you have outside of the clinic backup support, NA or AA too because without the safety of the methadone it is VERY easy to think you can take a pill here and a pill there and not get hooked into addiction again. If this isn't your first detox attempt you must be even more aware as I am sure you know. The addict in us says "hey,I got this I can do this", when in reality we are our own worst enemy.
The length of your addiction, your dose, how long you have been on methadone and whether or not you are even ready to detox are things you need to take into consideration .
Whether you are starting a new job or not isn't really a concern. You have rights and they legally cannot fire you for being on methadone if you are preforming your job as required. They also can't not hire you because you are on methadone, but unfortunately they can and do both because of the unfair stigma and lack of information about methadone as a whole.

|I have been on the clinic for 12 years. For most of that time I was on 210 mgs. After moving to another state the Dr there ordered me to start weaning down 2 mg every two wks. I got down to 158 when I found another clinic that would let me maintain that dose. Now after another two yrs on 158 I have made the decision to start weaning off 2 mg every two weeks by my choice. The clinic saved my life when I started it but I should have never been encouraged to keep upping my dose as this was a private clinic. I also resent greatly that we were not made aware of how hard methodone is to get off of. I am scared to death but I am more scared of always being afraid of not coming up with my hundred dollars a week for my doses. I go every two weeks so that is two hundred bucks for someone who is totally disabled and can't work every two weeks to get. God has blessed me greatly with help from family to pay for it. But my uncle that helps me is 84 yrs old. How much longer can that last. Plus I just want to feel like a free human again. I was over 30 yrs old when I had a bad auto accident that got me hooked on pain meds. After a little over 10 yrs of that hell I went on the clini. A lifesaver on one hand and a worse nightmare on the other. I pray that with the help of God I can do this. Failure is not an option.

I saw a comment posted on here in reply to ex-methadone patients.
Mainly the one granny had posted..
I see your angle granny, I really do.. I was there trying to rationalize why m-done was good for me all thru my so called recovery. I never really have blamed m-done for my problems directly. However, m-done to me is not a way of staying clean. It's a cop out to say your clean however. It is no different than any other pain Medicine that you try to kick. In my opinion its actually worse in several areas. The WD's for one, are far more agonizing than opiates.. The fact that it takes several weeks, sometimes months to get out of wd range is a tell-tale sign it's potent stuff.. You aren't clean if you are taking something that gives you WD's in the tune of riffs of death..
My whole problem with M-Done, is the act of trying to say your clean while on it.. That's balogne, everyone knows that.. Even the persons on m-treatment know this eventually.. If you can't quit it, then it's another addiction. Not only can you not quit, you will have bad WD's if you do.. How is this any better than opiates!?!
My advice is strictly aimed at someone trying to quit opiates all together. It is not directed toward someone w/ cancer or chronic pain. Those cases have no choice to always live w/ a pain med for better quality of life. Those people will benefit from m- treatment.. As it is said it's less harsh on your major organs, great for a long time patient..
If you are trying to quit using opiates of any kind, this is not a short term thing. Over the 10 years I went to several clinics.. Never once did I see anyone get off by tapering off themselves.. I saw several get down to 1-5 Mgs and still feel crappy as ever.. If they missed their dose. I mean they really wanted to quit too.. This drug is extremely addictive though.. It's very hard to quit!
In a nutshell, my problems are my problems, and I don't blame them on m-done..
I was a drug addict. I thought that I was being helped when getting on m-done. I thought I was finally over my opiate addiction, when I quit using pills and heroin. But, I found a new love in methadone.. It just prolonged my abuse to another level. If you want to be on m-done forever that's your business and life. I have no problem with it. It was a very great time of being lazy and eating candy all day w/ no job.. Did I mention I was an out of shape fatso? The old me loved that lifestyle of being able to do nothing and feel nothing emotionally.. Eventually you have to start to live life! If you don't make the choice yourself, someone will..

|I was on methadone for 7 years. I struggled staying clean the first year but then said enough is enough and worked at turning my life around and when I was ready, I successfully detoxed for 3 years off 85 mg. I did it very slowly. At first 1 mg every week, then as I got lower, 1 mg every other week. I listened to my body and mind and stopped when I needed to, leveled off and then would begin again. yes, even going that slow. I have been off methadone now for...this February will be 6 years. MMT saved my life. I listened to what they told me to do. I turned my life around and I will be graduating with a Masters degree in SW this spring.
Everyone is different, it takes a different amount of time for everyone, but you are there to change your life, so take advantage of the opportunity.

|hi rose, r u from dublin ? if so go to merchants quay and talk to the doctors and counsellors down there - they are the leading experts on heroin/methadone/ in Ireland- you are right about sub it is not used in ireland because of the way they dispense methadone in the clinics, some private doctors may have access to it, check with merchants quay, good luck rose|

| Hi there I am Sean Ellerton I would like to send out everyone here a pray as well all know the pain that each are going through. I am on 106mg of methadone a day. I am tapering off last month I was at 113mg per day. I have all my carries but it is time to come off. Now I know we are talking about pain we never felt before or huge loss of energy like we could sleep at any moment. Well I have been taking amino acids and vitamins for a week now and for the first day in a very long time I don't feel like I am going to pass out at a moments notice. What we forget is that yes methadone saved our lives it is still an opiate, it is a synthetic morphine and a very strong one. Long term use will put you into adrenal gland failure. Which will stop the bodies natural Endorphins which is the bodies natural pain killer. You will stop producing in males testosterone they score a males testosterone on a chart between 1-30 mine was at 3. For anyone on Methadone you can demand a blood test to get all of this stuff tested and trust me you are going to want to do that if you want to come off because I promise you that a lot of these numbers if you have been on methadone for more than a year will be very low. and as they get lower you doctor will just keep increasing your dose. Get all your hormone level checked ALL. Start taking amino acids.
D-Phenylalanine or DL-Phenylalanine
r 5 hydroxytryptophan (5HTP)
Males can get a testosterone shoot once every two weeks.
Vitamin B Complex
Vitamin D Supplement.
Or if you want to make it easier make an appointment with a naturopathic make sure he or she is also a medical Doctor so they can administer them with an IV.
But to put it simple our bodies won't ever start to feel good unless we give it the building blocks to heal itself. But we all also need God a simple pray will help with a lot of the pain. Just say these words out loud as you are reading them now and copy and paste it email it to everyone you know.
You never know When God is going to bless you!!
Good things happen when You least expect them to!!!!!!!!
"Dear Almighty Lord God Jesus Christ, I thank you for this day, for this is the day that the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it.
I thank you for my being able to see, and to hear, and to speak, and to feel, and to taste of Your good creation this day and every day.
I'm blessed because you are such a loving and such
a forgiving God, and such an understanding and caring God.
You have done so much for me and yet you keep on blessing me.
Forgive me this day for everything I have ever done, or ever said or ever thought
That was not pleasing to you. I say I am so sorry.
I now repent and ask for your forgiveness.
Please keep me safe O God From all danger, hurt, and harm.
Help me to start this day and every day With a new attitude and plenty of gratitude.
Let me make the best of each and every day, To clear my mind so that I can hear from you.
Please broaden my mind so that I can accept all things according to God's Will. Let me not whine and whimper
Over things I have no control over, for all things are working together for my good and God's Glory.
And when I'm pushed beyond my limits, give me the best response, a response which says Alleluia, and
Praise the Lord, and Thanks be unto the Most High God Almighty, I know that when I can't
pray, You listen to the prayer of my heart.
Continue to use me to do your will.
Continue to bless me so that I may be A blessing to others.
Keep me strong so that I may help the weak...
Keep me uplifted so that I may have Words of encouragement for the discouraged.
I pray for those that are lost and can't find their way, that they come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, even through this Prayer I am now praying.
I pray for those that are misjudged
Misguided, misused, and misunderstood.
I pray for those who don't know you intimately.
I pray for those who will delete this prayer
without sharing the Love of God with others
I pray for those that don't believe.
But I thank You, that I do believe
That God changes people and God changes things.
I pray for all my sisters and brothers.
For each and every one of the family members
In their households. I pray for peace, love, and joy
in their homes; I pray that they are out of debt
And that all their financial needs are met, and they have more than enough to be a blessing to others.
I pray for every eye that reads and says this Prayer
That they come to know that there is no problem, no circumstance, no situation that is greater than God, for God is greater than all, God is greater in all, God is greater through all, and God is greater upon all.
For God, the Most High God Almighty of all the Universes is truly the Greatest of All.
I pray for all my enemies, and those who have used me and abused me, and have lifted up their hands and their tongue against me. I now forgive them for all they have done. In Jesus Name, all my enemies are now forgiven, and I pray God forgiveness upon all my enemies, for they do know what they are doing, for I am a Child of God.
So every battle that I have ever encountered in my life is now in God's Loving hands, for You, O God fights all my battles for me.
I pray that these words be believed, received and accepted
into the hearts of every eye that sees them and every tongue that confesses them
in name of Jesus Christ, I pray believing, receiving and accepting God's miracles in my life this
day and every day, for God's Divine favor is now my heritage, in Jesus Name. Amen and Amen! It is
done! O' Praise The Lord! Alleluia!
God Bless You!! ! ! !
Just repeat the phrase below and see how God moves!!
God I so love you and I need you. I confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, my Lord, my Savior, and my King, and I confess this day and every day that I am highly FAVORED by God and man.
Please come into my life, Lord Jesus Christ and change my heart now!
Let's take this Prayer around the World.
You will receive a miracle tomorrow.
Don't ignore this and God will bless you.
Know that you are already blessed
By the person who sent this to you.
You never know how many people you will bring to the foot of the Cross because of you sending this e-mail out to as many people as possible, and God will say to you 'Well Done'
CONCENTRATE ON THIS:
"To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did. When God takes something from your grasp, he's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better. The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you. Something good will happen to you today, something that you have been waiting for to hear. Please repeat these 30 Words, " Almighty Jesus Christ, my Everlasting Father, walk through my house and take away all my worries and illnesses, and please watch over and heal my family in Jesus name, Amen". His prayer is so powerful. Pass this to other people. A blessing is coming to you in form of a new job, a house, marriage or financial blessings. Do not break or ask questions. This is a test. Does God come first in your life? If so, stop what you’re doing & send it to other people right now......Lets take this Prayer around the world.....And watch what God does for you.
Don't stand before God empty handed. Send this out to as many people as possible now, and let this be your ministry unto God who Brings Miracles in your life today and everyday.
Gloss Bless you all and good luck on your journey's.

Are you attending NA meetings?
Those folks have been right where you are and can help you.
You can find NA (Narcotics Anonymous ) in your phone book or on-line.
|Posted by: Granny2 3 December 16, 2014, 3:31 PM|
Go talk to your clinic counselor and do a VERY SLOW detox.(Assuming you are at a clinic) Depending on how long you have been on methadone it shouldn't be that difficult. If you haven't, go back to the beginning of this posting by Strongwoman and read what others in your place have said and done.
Your reasons for wanting to stop are your own, but if this is the only thing that has kept you opiate free you may want to reconsider. Talk to your counselor and as Papa Bear suggested try NA.
Keep us up on your progress, we all care!

|Iam new and you guys are probably the only ones on the planet that will, along with my support group get me through. As Granny said, you can get too comfortable on a dosage, which is what, along with the fear, I did.
A doctor put me on methadone maybe 7 yyrs ago, and I never took the correct dosage. He convinced me it was the best drug, since I have hep C and it would be the least damaging. I would of daid yes to anything. I had been in 3 accidents, my mother was dying, and I wanted to be there for her along with teaching the yoga I had been teaching for years. The pain was great, there was little help, and that I don't regret.After her death I sold the house stressing terribly, and moved to the mountains in a state 7 hrs away.My plan being to take the medication I had hoarded so I could walk off pain management and do it myself.
Maybe I rushed it as Granny said, everyone different. If your'e on 15 then 12 10 8 6 and 5 and took a long time with each then going to 5 to 2 1/2 can feel like your not only immovable but losing your mind. So I'm taking5mg and I have 200 mgs to work with, all saved and used since May 25mg to 5 from May to December, so thats maybe too slow, but it's too late to dwell on. What would be optimum. Anything anyone contributes has it's value and your time is the greatest gift. You guys are brave and wise and I will listen

|There is also one NA meeting in my town a week and I will go.|
|Posted by: cassiopaea December 18, 2014, 1:40 AM|
|I am back home and in th last 4 hrs, it is this forum that has moved me. Literally. Your posts had me crying for your pain and mine but with a gratitude of the strength and bravery we don't realize we have sometimes.
I found a NA meeting right down the street, was late and went anyway and spilled my guts while helping put back the coffee supplies. I am no stranger to these rooms, but I'm in a new town and just told them. Forget who I think I was or am, I need help, and they were so there. Because it is a small town they are especially welcoming and whether anyone judges it doesn't matter. Someone won't and you, as I, will get the emotional support that is absolutely needed to do this. This 5 mg that I'm on with only 200mg left to work with is what I'm aiming at. But I am also going to a primary care doc, tell her my needs and if she vcan help fine, if not, next. I will do this with the WE. I will be one of the successful ones. Methadone helped me enormously when I needed it, whether the doc was money hungry or not. I took what I needed which was 30 mg and took a long time to get off, as I am down to 5. I will try 4 tomorrow and see, Their is discomfort that is manageable with the help that I mentioned and the vitamin supplements. The degree of sickness I felt because I was also hiding this from others surrendered me to scream out for all this help. Substitutes like suboxone has its place for those who need it and when they need it. I am ready to be off all of it but that is so idividual.
It was this forum that pushed my body to the meeting and stayed for the next AA one too. I now have about 10 people who are truly there because I asked and was readt. I am not taking no for an answer.I know how to get attention so I decided to use it wisely for my life instead of any other reason. YOU ALL COUNT SOOOOOO MUCH! You are helping saving lives. I wish I could call you and be there for some of you my heary goes out because I AM YOU.
So anyone who comes upon this, don't think I have all I need , I need you, because we are the only ones of a handful on earth yhay are asking and succeeding in whatever way works. You can function whether it be methadone main., suboxone, AA NA GREAT!!! I need you so please I am scared as you are 5mgs to nothing. Thats what I want and am willing to do the work. If you relate please anything will help. You have suggestions I haven't thought of I'm sure. Im LISTENING

|Hi to all , and to Cassiopaea - Chelsea. I am so where u are, I am here for support all we have is fear of how bad are withdrawals going to be, how long do they last, can I do this, and please help with your advise everyone who has done it, & please keep giving us your encouragement and any natural meds and or prescribed that can help. I have a history of pain meds abuse 4yrs all and any. several surgeries, then put on methadone 100mg for 11 years have tapered down to 5mg in the last year. it does not matter how we got where we are the point is we want to change because we realize there is a life out there and we are not living it as we want, at least for me this is what opened my eyes to the fact that I am an addict I never wanted to be, never intended to be but I have to accept it to get help. I have been on several sights over the last week and from reading the hundreds of different ways that have been successful. Myself i tried to cold turkey first time off 100mg after 5 days went to detox they gave me some other drugs was still very depressed and anxiety could not think and feeling of being all alone with me the only one in there with methadone withdrawal was going insane after 7 days in detox went home, long story short no energy could hardly walk felt like zombie thought about just wanting to die. I made it 57 days and went back to dr and he put me on 10 mg. I never took the full 10mg pill, took 1/2 but I was starting to take more because I had things to do for energy. Ya Know. well I have made a decision to taper off slow so I am at 5mg for 1week now and from what I hear do it slow minimum of every 2 weeks and should wait 1month to taper every mg. I have heard with meth that because of the very long half life that we will not ajust to our taper for 10 to 14 days during this time we at least I am having bone aches sneezing not much sleep at all but I went to another doctor and was given gabapentin, clonidine and can get some ammonium ad over the counte for well u know. don't know if I spelled correctly but I started taking yesterday. I was completely honest with doc and she is so there to help. I was amazed and relieved that she was going to see me every 2 weeks and she will be raising the gabapentin up through out my taper. I am going through it with you, you are not alone I am here all the time because I can not do work at this time until I heel. I to started NA meetings there are all walks in there but don't be afraid speak up and tell your story and ask for help, and don't be ashamed you are not alone. I am here and several people have got off methadone I have talked to several. We all are a little different in our reasons so don't listen for the differences but listen for similarities.to taper what I am doing is listening to my body, remember it took us along time to get to where we are so easy does it, if u r like me when I want something I want it now. I made my mind up to taper I am doing on my own I bought a scale because I have always got 10mg pills, I plan to taper 1mg every 2-3 weeks if I have to every month. but I here of being to taper with liquid also. The main thing is u have to do for u. the dr told me that methadone gets into our bone marrow and stores up in fat cells. sSo diet I am doing amino acid drinking 1 gallon of water a day forcing my self to walk and I do weight lifting , I have to force my self to do any, stay away from stimulants coffee ect makes worse I was told, myself I have a couple cups in morning but going to switch to decaf. I have been told that the exercise is a must to stimulate our brain to start producing endorphins again the methadone did it for us, I also heard that people have tapered down to 1mg and even went to 1/2 mg 1/4 then skipped a day with this and stopped after a week they had some minor withdrawals for that two week period for body to adjust, but our brain is going to scream for longer this is where a support group is going to come in, This site has helped me so much and u do not have to do alone we can do together. I am here and so many others it was good for me to see that there are a couple people right where I am full of fear and just wanting to know what to do and what to expect throughout. I have talked with people that did cold turkey on high doses and my hats off to u. myself I heard that a lot of them were forced do do so from being in jail or kicked out of clinic or dr. In the end It does not matter how u do it if u r ready. I am sure that this drug has helped a number of people it did me. but it is now time for me to stop. Dig deep inside your self be determined and do not quit no mater what. I have been promised by a man I met that it is tough , give it 90 days after your last dose, then after 6 months he never looked back. he said that it took him about 18 months to feel normal. and I have been told this by several people men and women who I have talked with eye to eye. Well I have rambled long enough. God Bless All and a special thank you for this site and all who give there encouragement and wisdom.|

|I have been taking opioids since I was 14, I'm now 22. I've had cancer n went threw chemo n beat cancer. But that was easy compared to coming off methadone. There are no methadone clinics were I live and I have no help from nobody and no insurance at all n can't get it. So I have to buy my meds off the streets..I feel hopeless n worthless n I don't know were to turn before its too late|

|I am a methadone success story. I still have cravings & it's still hard but there are good days too.
I was at a high dose (165) for about 2 years before I started tapering down 3 mgs a week. I wanted to go faster but they wouldn't let me, and later in the process that turned out to be a good thing.
Methadone worked for me b/c it allowed me to live a pretty normal life for a couple of years while I tried to get myself together & build up some mental & emotional strength, and take care of my family. When I started tapering I didn't even feel it til I got down to about 70 or 80mgs, and then I started going down only 2mgs a week & was fine again. I had to stop and go back up to my last lowest comfortable dose a few times, but those weren't setbacks- my body just needed a little more time to catch up, and then I continued on down.
It didn't get really hard til the last 12mgs. That's when I started to feel really crazy, suicidal, was tearing my hair out by the roots to try to stop the mental turmoil! SO, I changed it up again & did 1mg every 2 weeks. Time passed with the business of life, and now it's my 15th day off & life is better! Different but so much better.
It's not an easy process, but it doesn't have to be a terrible one. I know everyone says this, but GOING SLOW is the only way I believe it's possible to get off methadone & stay off other drugs. I took 2 WHOLE YEARS to taper off! An unexpected benefit is that it taught me true patience, something I never had before.
Not everyone needs that long, and some need longer. It depends on your dose & how your body & brain react, and what you can handle. The mental game is harder than the physical withdrawal, and if you're here reading this you're probably ready to play it. Just play it smart.
If I can do this, I, an addict effectively since I was 13 and am now 36, an addict who bucked every restriction put on me, played every system, tried to wrestle life to conform to my will... If I can do it, YOU ALL can do it!!!!
~~~~~~~positive energy to all~~~~~~~
My BEST THINKING got me into this jackpot and it won't get me out....
I had to admit I was powerless in 1989 or I would have been dead before 1990.
|Thanks Bob for popping in and adding your 2 cents...it is SO appreciated.
Life happens and I can't seem to get here as often as I'd like to and think I should, so it is nice when someone new finds us and if I cant be here for them that someone is.
To all my friends here...HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU!!
I am not looking forward to the midnight stuff because my one little dog, Simon" freaks out with fireworks and not even tranquilizers from the vet work for him. Hopefully it will be raining and there won't be any fireworks..LOL.
As I may have mentioned....
My brother -in-law passed on 12-13-14 and my husband is the executor of his small estate. We have had to clear out his apartment by the 1st, store everything and then pick up his remains from the Neptune Soc today. Both places were 45-60 miles from home one way so it has been time consuming and with the holidays, just plain hard. Thankfully we have our teenage grandkids and one of their friends who were able to assist in the move. It is amazing how much a single person can accumulate in 12 years at one residence. Now that that is all done we can breathe a sigh of relief.
Now we have a winter storm coming, it is actually already here..I can hear the wind HOWLING outside. For So. Cal it cant be compared to back east as far as storms go, but we are supposed to get snow down to 1500 feet. We can see Big Bear and Arrowhead from our house so when we get up in the morning there should be snow everywhere we look.
So again, thanks Bob,I hope you have a wonderful New years Eve! Same for you Girl Today, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas with your kids, they grow up so fast. and to Jack, MomNMore, momg, and anyone else I have had the pleasure of talking to over the years...I hope you have a great 2015!
|i have 2 granddaughters who will be coming to "Papa and Grammy's" for a sleepover.
I am blessed !! Through AA/NA I was blessed !
I have only been in active recovery for 25 yrs, most of my AA/NA friends are 30-35-40 yr folks.
I am the "rookie" and I continue to follow them and learn.
What a great feeling to sit with the oldtimers around a table with 150-200 yrs total sobriety.
Anyone here can experience the same thing when they go to their local meeting and sit with the oldtimers... and listen.
I was told in the beginning to go and sit quietly with the oldtimers to hear what they had to say.
Then keep coming to the meetings until what I heard them say made sense !! :o)
I will be at the local Wednesday night meeting tonight to get 2015 off to a good start.
Happy New Year !!
|I'm slowly detoxing off methadone. It can be done, people tell me I'm crazy for trying to detox. But it's working well for me. I was taking 90mg a day. Now I'm on 60 and I haven't had any issues. I'm just scared of what might happen when I get to a really low dose. But I'm keeping my head up and continue to tell myself things can only get better from here. So everyone keep their fingers crossed for me.|
|hi everyone I came along this site by accident.But am very glad i did. I have been on methadone since 1996. I was prescribed it for migraines by my primary care dr. I was on 85 mg a day for 15 years. when he retired i found myself at a pain management dr who did mri and found reason for migraines. plus 2 herniated disc in back. he immediately switched me to opana, which i hated. I asked him to put me back on methadone.He did but only 40 mgs.he wanted to put me on fentynl patches i refused. the methadone worked why would i want to switch. I have been on that dose with no request of increase..no dirty urines EVER.. no police reports. I took it for what it was prescribed for. No other drugs but an occasional half of a xanax. he randomly drug test me which was no problem but in aug 2014 my urine had amphetamines in it....he did another in sept it came back with methamphetamine's in it they do not watch you pee and they do not follow any kind of procedures for drug testing. i did not seal my urine once i handed it over it was set on a table among all the others unsealed. in.October couldn't see dr due to insurance problems with his office,November same thing..still picked up script..finally got to see dr and he tells me whats in my urine. he was going to drop me as a patient but sent me for drug and alcohol assessment. i went willingly no problem seen him again after assessment. he spoke with the counselor and assured him i was not a drug seeker. he decided to keep me as a patient if i agreed to come when he called for drug test..no problem. i waited 20 minutes for my script the medical assistant came in gave me a 7 day supply told me they made appt at different place for another assessment. I was shocked..they would not let me speak to the dr. I went to new assesment..same thing no treatmwent needed. meanwhile this is over Christmas and new years which his office was closed for 10 days..ran out of medicine..called office very unprofessional. only 2 woman work there..i have never got along with either of them but because i liked the dr i continued to go. finally on jan 05 2015 i called his office was told not to call them they would call me..at this point i am in pain and very sick to MY point of suicide. They called next day told me he spoke with counselor she changed her mind .... She now changed my assesment to I NEED TREATMENT. I called her back and asked why she changed her mind. she said she spoke to medical assistant got further information. Thats all she would say. I am totally at a lose for words as to what these 2 women have done to me.I have called his office they will not leave message for him to call me back. I called methadone clinic they will not take me because im not an addict even though i been on this for 20 years. worked all my life no trouble with police....so in order for me to not be sick i have to resort to becoming a drug addict and lying to clinic tell them i am a drug addict. I have tried to get appt with new pain dr but they all are booked so far in advance. i have been without methadone for 5 days and am so sick. I am going to clinic and get off of this medication..it is a shame that people go through this for other peoples hatred I too have heard the horror stories of getting off of this. As i sit here typing this i am crying in pain and physically sick...and yes very angry..thanks for being here|
|The med. Was my DOC (drug of choice) and it was the devil I vowed to never return my addition didn't stop there but suboxone is a much bigger choice and def. Gives you a quality of life that doesn't revolve around a four hour window that's not set up for people who want to succeed methadone for pain may be a different story but there's plenty of other options. |Hello! I've detoxed from methadone successfully. I also have 3 close friends and 2 family members who have successfully detoxed from it as well. We are all doing great now and only one of us went back to methadone, but that was only for 3months and she's now doing fabulous. At first its hard. Let's face it...no sleep, complete and total muscle pain, back pain, and body pain.... Its not fun!!! But we all found that each day IS a little bit better. My close friend and I realized pretty early on that we couldn't do it on our own, so we decided to turn to a Higher Power! It helps to have someone to talk to at anytime at all (especially the wee hours of the night) that you know is stronger than you! Something to believe in that's positive, pure, and powerful! In times of hardship and pain we find out just how weak and insignificant we are! We all need to know at some point in our lives that there is something bigger and better waiting for us when all our suffering is over...you must have something to believe in that you really believe can help make your life better now AND when its all said and done! You just hold on ...IT DOES GET BETTER! And when its better, its so nice to think back, remember you were in bondage, AND KNOW YOU WERE STRONG ENOUGH TO BEAT IT!!! YOU ARE NOW FREE!!!! So why not Thank God and enjoy your new life....remember (I always think of this) if you can beat this and succeed, YOU CAN MAKE IT THROUGH ANYTHING!!!! Only the strong survive!
God bless and good wishes to you and yours! :)
|Paul and Danyell,
Wow ! Thanks for the great stories of coming off methadone. While it is not for everyone it certainly lets those who wish to try it hope and hearing that others have successfully accomplished it is even better!!
|Hi! I see that this is a pretty oled post, wasn't sure if anyone was still active on it or not. I have successfully tapered down off of Methadone to 0 Mg. Not a easy job, but I did it. Any how it has been almost 4 days since my last 1 MG dose. I don't feel all that bad. Pretty irritable, achy, some minor RLS that effects my arms too. Exhausted beyond belief, no sleep, and I feel like I have NO muscle strength left in my whole body. Like cinder blocks tied to my hands and feet. I really don't have a support system other then my husband, but he's really no help. He's still at 114 mgs and won't try and come down. He thinks i should just be "ok" because I completed my taper. We have 2 young kids who depend on us. And I just feel totally alone in this. I am working 40+ hrs a week on my feet all day to support our family. My work is noticing these changes in me. I really need some type of an idea on how long this is going to last. I've only slept about 2 broken hours in 4 days now, so I'm starting to get pretty shakey/ confused and food/the smell of food makes my stomach turn. I take vitamins and drink lots of fluid. I'm pretty desperate to know when this will start turning for the better. I just want a good night sleep and to stop crawling out of my skin. My kids need their mom back! Also I think it's important to note that I was on methadone for about 7 years and heroin for about 7 before that. I've been through many cold turkey runs, and tapered tries, but never gotten this far. But one thing I am noticing is something I have never noticed before, I have this pain in the lower part of the back of my skull. Right above where my spine conects. It's two points pressure on either side of my skull that I swear I can push on and feel the pain in my head. Anyone have any idea where the dopamine and endorphin receptors are located in the brain? Could this be the cause? Lack of the normal chemical that my body is missing now? Might sound stupid, just a thought. Anyways, just looking for someone else out there to give my any indication of how long this crap will last! I knew it wouldn't be easy, and I'm ok with that. Just need some type of reassurance that this will eventually end and I can be a normal happy mom again. Thanks in advance if there is anyone out there.
If getting clean/sober was as simple as tapering and walking away then everyone would do it.
If you are an addict like me the problems just begin when I get clean/dry .. not end.
You give this your best shot and if you start unravelling then get to NA like millions of others have done. There you will find the answers to your addiction.
All the best.
|I have been on methadone for nearly 10 years. Despite what some may say about it, I can tell you that starting the program saved my life. I'm now 30 years old, and really want to start having children before it's too late. While I know a lot of people have kids on methadone, I just can't do it. It wouldn't be fair to the child to have to go through withdrawals, and who knows the effects it could have on an unborn child,as with any medication. I'm on 95mgs and started today going down one mg. Every other week. It might trade forever but hopefully going slow will help. I'd love to hear every one else's recovery stories. God bless|
|Your not alone. After seven years of daily use for chronic back pain it was a decision I made to leave this wicked drug. It has been 6 weeks and I've never felt so much pain in my 58 years but am also feeling a little normal everyday that passes. I'm told that this could last up to 2 years. I'm in this for the long haul and am refusing to go back on the drug after doing a three day taper. I'm just glad to be on this side of the ground!
It can be done with the help of our Father in heaven. Good luck!
|Dear Mom of 2. Kick that lazy drug addict of a husband to the curb. You shouldn't be doing this alone. Forget the taper, actually I did a 3 day taper and have the same issues you have and it's been 6'weeks. I was taking 80 to 180 milligrams per day for seven years when I started a 3 day taper, against my Dr.s orders. If it were up to him I would still be on this wicked drug. He needs to help you out and that won't happen if he's still using. Good luck.|
|I am off methadone. CRC health group runs methadone clinics all over the usa
And their blatent violation of patient rights, general base mistreatment
By Nursing staff and administration, corruption, and ultimatley blatent theft of
Patient funds led me to run as far from these thugs as fast as possible.
Its no suprise to me that Mitt Romney was their lobbyist.
It took 5 days to start feeling better coming off 10mg cold turkey
The withdrawl was no where near as strong as 160mg which was my peak
Methadone is true evil and being dispensed with zero concern for the patients
By these for profit crooks. If I was a meaner persin I woukd wish
Great retribution on these thugs but since I am not I will await the day
Of justice that is coming to CRC.
I am so sorry you have had such a horrendous experience with the methadone clinic you went to. I know from experience...Methadone clinics are NOT created equal.
The one I have been going to for many years is great. The staff, the doctors, the counselors.....they are all really nice people with the patients best interest at heart. But...they do have a policy which, if necessary, they stretch really far, giving you extra chances to get it right. If you are serious about getting opiate free they are there to help you but if you want to just play games and trying to stay clean is not your true intention eventually they will ask you to leave the program if you have no desire to work on your program. They will let you go and if you so choose you can go to some other clinic that really doesn't care one way or another whether you get and stay clean or not. Those clinics will take your money or the states, it doesn't matter to them if you get clean or not. Fortunately they are far and few between.
Good luck and hang tough.
|I am glad you found some kind of peace but from my experience over 3 years and traveling to dozens
Of clinics across the USA I am convinced the current model stinks of disservice, corruption, and lies. Never has one doctor "sic" treated me humanely let alone even looked me in my eyes as one human to another or give any guidance I could not obtain from a 2 dollar self help.book at Goodwill.
I have seen drug profiters bending a fakely regulated industry to the max. CRC Health Group, Bain International and now Merck are bottom dwellers of the lowest sort.
I hope you can see that this bitterness rings from truth and my honest experiences
I have ran companies, I work with various people from all kinds of cultures daily
I am not a bitter person unless I come across corruption the likes of CRC Health Group, Bain International, and now the new corp in the the plate spinning game Merck.
|For anyone wishing to be free of this drug you can do it if I could trust me!
-1 if your cross addicted quit methadone last and the others one at a time
I was a full blown selfish drunk and addict for 20 years
I first stopped alcohol, then a month later speed, Month later
Xanex (the hardest by far) Then any other addict pIlls like cloNodine
Lyrica, flexoral, and finally Methadone.
With Xanex you must taper I nearly died -- woRst psychological withdraw
Of any drug except maybe bad acid --Taper down to even a tenth of a mg
Benzos are so so.powerful. If you are broke and stuck -emergency room it- and request to see
A doctor - not a nurse--and relay the seriousness
Your life could be saved dont go into seizures alone in a dark hotel so many
Great people die that way.
With Methadone taper taper taper and ignore all the methadone lifers and most of the staff
I calculated 80 percent turnover of staff in first 6 months at 3 of the biggest clinics in USA.
You can be free. I tapered to 10mg and then after CRC stole money from me I walked out and the attorney general consuer dept got my money back. Stopping 10mg cold turkey after coming down from 1oo plus mg daily was bad but not as bad as when i kicked h. I was bad sick on 4th and 5th day and the 6th day i was laughing, legs stopped shaking, and could get some sleep 6 days and u can be free
IF YOUR OK WITH religion or spirituality Aa or Na is good if your a more reality based person
smart recovery is good just beware the covert aa culties looking to convert lol.
No wrong way to stay clean though even if cult like lol. I respect any group trying to help people
Learn how to live free.
Most of all take it from me life is sooo much better not on these drugs especially methadone.
Weights falling off, I can feel emotion again. Sex drive is back, I can tastr food, calcium levels have risen, New car, good job, good people around me,humility. Graditude, and waking up every morning without kowtowing to CRC Health Group.
No wrong way to stay clean ----Peace.
|Methadone was the worst WD Ive ever gone through, i was also taking subs but not a lot. And ive WD off oxy and H (i was never an IV user though) and the this methadone s*** blew those out of the water i was only taking it for about 6 months and the WD symptoms lasted a little over a month. Towards the end sleep and lack of energy motivation were the last symptoms. My advice stay away from that s*** getting off h was a cake walk compared to this
Im sure it would of been better if i tapered, but the addict in me didn't let that happen....drugs. One question a good friend of mine has abusing methadone for a couple years now....could he could possibly get PAWS? 150 mg a day i think.
Well I am glad to not see the clinic group I belong to on your hit list.
Aegis Treatment Centers, all located in California at the moment, is a leader in the field of addiction. With 24 clinics in California they by far are the best one I have been to. (I have been to 4 clinics prior to this one)
I am also a member of the PAAG group Aegis created to better assist the patients. PAAG, Patient Advisory and Advocacy Group was created to give the staff a patients perspective in all things happening at the clinics. They also have created an on line group meeting, called Keys to Recovery or K2R, for those who wish to be involved that way. My husband and I volunteered to chair a K2R meeting at the clinic, once a week for patients at the clinic. It is based on AA/NA, with a set of 15 "keys" to assist in their recovery. We are in our 4th year.
So, all in all I am happy with this clinic but I know there are patients out there who can find fault in any form of assistance until they are really ready to clean up, then a program will work for them.
by the way, having an addiction to benzos is a really BAD thing, I know a few people who battled it. Benzos and methadone are a BAD combo and our clinic is on top of it. There is a gal in our meeting, who after years of taking benzos on top of her methadone (and regular pill counts that she HATED) finally was made to give them up and got on something to help her anxiety that is not addicting. She is still feeling the after effects and still not willing to admit that the clinic is right in their stance about it and making sure she isn't still taking it. We Addicts think we always know whats best for us...lol, it saved her life.
I just wanted to let you know my boyfriend came off 100 mg cold turkey, he did drink and smoke throughout that time tho. He moved to another state and has been clean at least 6 months now. I was at 100 mgs and I started going down 10 mgs a week until I hit 30. That's when I started experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Then I decided to go back up to 40 cuz I started feeling bad, have been on that for about 2 months. I started going down 5 a week now, currently at 25 mgs. I don't do any illegal drugs, I just drink some and so far ive been fine. I know it takes 2 to 6 weeks for u to truly feel symptoms of withdrawal but im really ok now. I think your mind is the most powerful reason for addiction; yes I realize there are actual physical symptoms but I have been thru that too and I think your brain is more powerful. Basically, I wish you the best of luck and my boyfriend is an inspiration to me. If other people can go cold turkey without relapsing, you can taper off. It wont be easy but its possible.
|I was at 100 mg for ten years. I dropped 5 mg per month until I reached 20 mg. after each drop I felt a little tired for a day but no WD. From 20 mg down to 2 mg by 1 mg a week. When I hit 5 mg I felt crushing fatigue - still no WD. I jumped off at 2 mg.
No other drugs prescribed or taken since. No alcohol either.
My first week I was dizzy most of the time.
Then I came down with severe bronchitis that lasted one month.
When that cleared up I felt ok but still lethargic especially in the afternoons.
Lethargy lasted three months.
I started to feel normal by month four -- of being clean.
However, I still feel a cloudy buzzy sensation in my head...it's been ten months since I stopped. It's a small price to pay.....I guess. I hope the buzzing stops one day, but if it doesn't I can see myself being okay with it.
I hope I never take any drug again for the rest of my life. It really was not worth a wasted life.
I'm fifty now. I guess I have between ten and thirty years to live. I'll try to make up for lost time. I love you all.
|I am currently on day 10 (almost 11... it's late) of going cold-turkey from 35 mg of methadone. I had a 13+ year prescription for Vicodin for degenerative disc disease and for breaking my neck and tailbone (the dose/frequency increased 3 times in 13 years) but had accumulated a lot of extra Vicodin. I was never interested in taking even my prescribed dose, just when absolutely necessary. THEN... my husband was killed in a brutal work accident and I found his body.. leaving me with our 13 mo old son to raise on my own - needless to say, that was the worst moment in my life and after that moment i started to take more and more Vicodin. Long story short, I knew i wanted to/needed to stop the opiates but due to lack of insurance and any family support that would allow me to enter a rehab facility, an in-patient rehab was not an option for me. So... I called my local methadone clinic and because my "habit" didn't necessarily meet their criteria, the intake nurse was all too happy to "fudge" the dose and frequency of what I was taking (should have seen that as a HUGE red flag...) and I started at 25mg until any other meds were out of my system. Then they increased and increased and increased my dose to 190mg!! I had to make repeated requests to speak to the "Doctor/actually PA" who was only in twice a month. I had to get her approval to stop the increase. She wouldn't let me start to taper off until i jumped through many additional hoops until about a year later. At this point, the taper was only 2 mg every week. (I have discussed with my PMD that the recommended decrease is 10% until you get below a certain level, then 5%, then 4%, 3%, 2%, etc.) The snail's pace of tapering and continued delays to see the clinic PA to approve additional decreases was maddening! I had been on Methadone longer than I had abused my Vicodin. I REALLY regret EVER starting methadone. I NEVER ONCE tested positive for any drug or failed to follow protocol, or missed a single appt in 3 yrs, but the second I switched cell phones after mine broke, I lost my calendar and missed ONE appointment - the ONLY mis-hap in my 3 years at the clinic. They immediately switched me from phase 6 (where you get 2 weeks of take home bottles) to phase 1 (where you have to come everyday). I was so annoyed after explaining my situation, PROVING it to them, and feeling absolutely no understanding... I told my counselor that I was DONE. I quit then and there. I really do feel like those clinics try to just get as much money out of you as possible...and trap you there, making it as difficult as possible to EVER get off! I REFUSE to go back and am determined to see this through. It is a huge challenge with a kindergartner boy at home, pets to keep up with, meals, cleaning, laundry, etc.... you get the idea.
I don't mean to completely bash all methadone clinics... I realize there are some people who will need methadone therapy for life, but I wasn't about to be one of those people. One of the last final straws was having to bring my son with me to the clinic a few times during holiday breaks, etc I was mortified and felt like the biggest failure to my son.
What I am asking is if there are any suggested or recommended natural supplements, vitamins, ideas anyone has to make these next few weeks a little more tolerable? I need to be the best mother I can be and I KNOW that ridding myself of this awful methadone once and for all is a huge start. I WILL make it through this regardless, but would prefer to be able to do a little more as a mother during the next few additional weeks..
Sorry for the looooooonnng message - I appreciate anyone's feedback or suggestions.
Thank you kindly
|Hello and welcome! I wish that I could give you a magic cure all but the truth is your just going to have to suck it up. Time will be your best friend. I did my detox off 35ml and my withdraws lasted about 21 days. During this time I hated life! I didn't sleep one whole night for 2 weeks. My legs hurt so bad that I couldn't stand up for more than a hour at a time. I felt awful. It will get better! I didn't take anything to help me along. Maybe some advil here and there. I ate lots of banana's that helped a little. Not much you can do. I can relate about the young child my son was 4 going on 5 when I detoxed. I told him mommy was sick and would get better soon. I feel like I never had the energy I had while using. I just try to rest and eat a multi-vitamens. Sometimes it helps. I started going to NA and that helped more than anything. Wish you luck! Stick with it it gets better. Iv'e been clean for almost 33 months and I never want to go back!|
|Hello.. I was on methadone for 35 years and valium 40 years.. I walked off of both..I was in bed one full year.. I stayed off the methadone but had to get back on the valium ,It was too much for my body to handle.. After 3@half years off meth I still did not feel good.. so I started to sip meth now and then.. Well that was a bad idea.. No doctors could help me because no one walks off 35 years.. So I got back on the clinic was on 4@half months ,Thought NO WAY I HATE the methadone so much I just want to be free.. so I am now again detoxing.. Its not as bad because I was on 4@half month ..but still a detox feels bad.. I have suboxin little pieces I take now and then I did something I never was in too a bag of dope.. anything but meth.. I have no health Ins..I can go 5 days with nothing but am like a dead person no energy .. I believe if you HATE something enough you I can over come.. I am fighting .. Thats my story
Are you saying you walked off 190mg's?!?!?
|Posted by: Granny2 3 March 18, 2015, 5:31 PM|
|Cloudyhead, Cricket, Kat and Sassy,
Wow you are really in a world of dog doo aren't you? I feel so bad for each of your situations. Hang tough and make sure to take care of yourselves...eat and stay hydrated...very important, and treat other symptoms as they occur. Go to the ER if it gets really bad.
Why have you not applied for healthcare in your state? Drug addiction is covered I believe and there are people who will help you apply.
If there is no openings where you want to go you really should stay where you are until there IS one. Stopping 100mg after that long is going to be difficult to say the least, maybe try for a detox spot??
If what you say is true that nurse is the reason clinics get bad reviews and everyone hates them. There ARE good clinics to go to. She and the clinic should be reported if what you say is the truth.
Good luck to you all.
|Yes, i been off it 2 months now, was on 50mls a day, i have come off it by smoking Heroin, Cheating i know but im swopping over to subutex next Monday, Im so ill some nights when i ran out of H. Realyl unconformable nights, Pure hell some nights, its more the unconfortablness and agitation,anxiety for me than actually Phyical pain(i do get some pain). I ve been parked up on methadone for over 5 years dailys dose(50mls). It doesnt actually make me feel high in anyway but my senses seemed highened now when i start Rattling of the H. I been knombed up for years without realising it i think. So there is your answer if it counts, yes 2/3 months off methadone, I have actually used 20mls say 3 times within this 10week (ish) peroid also but its been couple weeks between each times. I couldnt of done it without smoking H. because mentally it takes a really really super strong minded person to just stop(no taper), U are so ill, the thought of people having to do it the Hardcore with in USA jail(i read about it somewhere) makes me shudder" Cruel and inhuman, i would be very very scared to be incarcirated without a methadone program for addicts, id love to hear from anyone with this experience.
|This thread has been dead apparently for almost 3 years now, however, I stumbled upon while likely searching for the same information. Here's my compressed story. I fractured my C7 vertebrae dicing into a pool in Boca Raton 18 years ago now, during a business convention. Yes, we had all been drinking. I assumed we were driving into the "deep end", so did a huge swan dive (essentially entering the water perfectly vertical, for those not familiar with the term....). Much to my surprise, the "deep end" was only 4 1/2 feet deep. I fractured my C7, split my head open, requiring 20+ staples, and the force of the impact instantly and literally Shattered 4 of my molars. Believe it or not, other than the instant body's natural reaction to something it KNOWS is very close to possible death, spitting out the tooth chunks is what still send chills down my spine, but I digress. Anyway, during the next 5 years, I was in two car accidents that should have been fatal, with multiple fractures, lung collapse, and some major lacerations. I also shattered my right ankle, tibia and fibula, and, later, fractured 17 of the 28 (or is it 29?) bones in my other foot, which included my actual heel splitting in two pieces. The are the major events, though there were others, including major surgery on the bottom of my right foot after a "bare foot Frisbee episode" that saw me jumping up and coming straight down on the ONLY beer bottle in 500 metres. The hospital failed to suture it properly, as it was cut completely across my foot, right to the bone. It hemorrhaged, some sutures split, and it started going gangrene within 3 or 4 days, so the head to cut out a fairly significant part of the middle of the thickest fleshy part of the bottom of the foot.
So, that being longer than I intended, the point of it all is that I was started on some very heavy doses of opiates right after breaking my neck (120 mg/day slow release morphine, plus 40 mg fast release pills for breakthrough pain). I was on that dose for about 6 months. Then, it was switched to Tylenol 4s and dilaudid. I don't even remember when they switched me to Percocet and Oxy Contin, but that was the combination that finally, after 18 years of dependancy, pushed me over, in my mind, to am addict. My tolerance at that point was so high, I had to supplement with more off the street. At the end, I was taking about 400 Percs per month, and about 60-80, 80mg Oxy's on top of that. After a fender bender with my brand new car, with the realization that I neither knew where I was note what was happening, and my job in jeopardy (I am a professor of marketing and I.T. at a very well respected college, and you have to REALLY implode in order to even get in trouble once your in...) and years of history looking back of going through life in an almost constant opiate haze, I finally went to seek help. Against my doctors advice (he ended up starting me on 40mg /day of Valium for a week, then 35 the next week, 30 the next, and so on, which actually ended with me still needing opiates, but now I had a benzodiazepam addiction to boot!!!!), I jumped on the Methadone waggon, and like 99.9% of everyone that does, had NO IDEA WHAT THE HELL I HAD GOTTEN MYSELF INTO!!!! I maxed at 120 mg/day, but quickly got that down to 100, as I tried a supervised, ultra rapid taper - 5 mg/day, which is when I also found out I was addicted to the Benzo's, creating me hard, ending up in the hospital, and saw me back at 100 mg per day, where I stayed for 2+ years.
Now here, I think, is what you were /are looking for. I had gotten so sick of having to go in and see this "Doctor" every week, the constant urine tests, having to explain why you took a Gravol or whatever like your a criminal, and the constant degradation, about 5 months ago, I decided enough was enough. I researched the withdrawal process, both from the clinical perspective, and from a few blogs of others that either went child turkey,or did what I chose to do, which was drop 10 mg/week, and go from 100 mg to 0 in 10 weeks. NO SLOWDOWN, None of this 2 year taper, I JUST HAD TO GET OFF. I originally wanted to go cold turkey, but after reading a blog where one person died after doing that from only 60ml and others going through 6 months of the ultimate HELL, I chose my path, Extremely against my Doctors wishes. He gave me all the speeches, which I'm sure you've heard. He was so against it that he actually ended up TALKING with me and actually got to know me, something that hasn't happened even though id been seeing him EVERY WEEK for more than TWO YEARS. He said that in his 15 years of this field, only one other patient had tried to do what I was doing, and he never saw or heard from the guy again once he got down to 20ml, and was EXTREMELY ADAMANT THAT I CHANGE my decision, for all the CLINICAL reasons you've likely heard. I wouldn't budge, so he had no choice but to go along. I was lucky, as I promised him I would see him through it all, and after I hit 0 for a couple of months, as, in his words, "I really don't KNOW how long you will suffer or how bad is going to get, as I have NO CLINICAL DATA for such a radical taper".
I was just fine, until I hit the 40 mark. I had been intentionally "missing" a dose here and there for a few months prior to the drop, trying to get my body used to the trauma and shock I knew was coming. So at 40, the withdrawal from the previous 6 weeks started hitting me. All the symptoms, no sleep, legs starting to drive me crazy (I'm still not decided which is the worst of those two, but I think the lack of sleep... Especially when you reach day 8 or 9 of ZERO sleep!!!), but I knew going into this what I was in for, so I had shored up my mental barriers and determination (some day stubbornness, others stupidity... I think that's more accurate...) and I continued on. By the time I hit 10 ml, which was a 100% drop from the pure how week, I could barely make it to the doctors to GET my drinks, and because of the REAL dangers at this point, he wouldn't give me any carries, so I had to go on EVERY DAMNED DAY!!! I had J been through opiate withdrawal likely HUNDREDS of times over the years, but I had NEVER experienced ANYTHING like this. The ONLY reason I was still able to even speak SEMI-Coherently, was because I was up to 3-4 hours of Mindful Meditation per day. I have been meditating since I was a teenager and started martial arts. If I didn't have the mediation, I can guarantee I would have broken long before this. So when I saw him when I was dropping to 10,:i told him to just give me that days drink of 10 ml, and one last drink of 5 ml in 4 days, then no more. MY LAST DOSE OF Methadone, was 1 WEEK ago today. I saw him yesterday, for the first time on NO Methadone, and though I am, for the most part, in A LIVING, CONSTANT HELL, that 5 seconds of triumph of bring able to sit there and (very erratically) talk to him knowing id done something he said couldn't, shouldn't, wouldn't be done, was enough to give me just enough of a, what... Rejoice?? I'm not really sure of the correct word right now, as I cannot think clearly at all. I have not slept for about 6 days this time. Again, thank GOD that is researched this prior to the act, so I had asked him to put me on Gavopentan, which is used primarily for neuropathy patients, but actually takes about 80% of the restless and camping leg issues away, which is a MASSIVE issue. He was also kind enough to give me 4 pills of Tramacet per day, ONLY for the next two weeks, for the pain, which is HORRIFIC! ALL of my chronic pain is back, only about 150% of what it EVER was, and EVERY other cell in my body is in constant pain. I've been taking Immodium Advanced, which helps with the vowels AND some of the cramps. I STILL say that the mediation has been the greatest help though. However, NOW I am getting a little scared, as the last two days, for the first time since I started to learn how to mediate, I have been unable to reach the "Mindfulness" state. The trick, in a nutshell for the mediation to work, is you have to focus, REALLY focus on a point, so that you can then "UNfocus"..... You have to be ABLE to focus enough, in order to unfocused, and when you can't focus, you can't mediate. Anyway, The Doctor said I had reached the worst of the withdrawal, and, If this is true, then I can get through this, more easily than I had anticipated. However, I cannot let myself believe he is right, because if iBELIEVE now that this is the worst, and it combines to get worse, I'm done with. I won't have the strength to continue fighting. So that's where I am at now. If you wish, I will try to post every couple days to let you know where I am at. That is, if anyone is still reading this. It's likely been A HUGE waste of time, as this has taken me forever top focus enough to string the thoughts together in a coherent form. If nothing else, it has been at least mildly therapeutic putting it in words.
If anyone still monitors this, I will be doing the site, so I will post A VERY short message right after this with my Handle.
|I dont know anyone who's come off methodone but for one person. Its someone very close to me, he struggled horrifically for two years, stating at 70mls/daily and went down to 30ml. He then was switched to Suboxone for about 6 months, for then he was so angry with the methodone doctor as the way in which he'd been treated as well, a criminal and a junkie that, my friend quit the clinic and got rewired on morphine up unitil three weeks ago. Three weeks ago he started whittling down his morphine habit which he, contrary to what you might think, he shoots it. So he's sick, really ill, hasnt bathed in a week but he is down to shotting 5mg three times daily. He should be clean/finished his morphine stint and off the methodone in two weeks.
Suboxone IS NOT covered by BC Pharmacare in Canada. The presciber fought with my friend, as the doctor didnt want to prescribe it, rather wants EVERYONE to continue on Methodone treatment. To this day, 18months later, that same doctor lies to any other patient stating he doesnt have the credentials to prescibe Suboxone when my friend and I both know for a fact he does. Its insidious and you can both forget your rights as a patient, and any hope of coming off methodone unless you are going to go about it lie my friend here. Please if any of you have a suggestion as to how to get off methodone without shooting drugs please help.
|sick and ready,
I would say you are dropping too fast...you aren't giving you body time to catch up with the lack of methadone. Go slower. It may take a little longer but you'll have better results in the long run. Maybe try 1 or 2 points every other week.
You didn't get addicted overnight, you wont get clean overnight either. take the time you need to do it right. Stay hydrated, eat right, get what sleep you can and you should have better results.
I was on 110mgs of meth for 3yrs prescribed by a Dr. for injuries sustained in a auto accident.
Prior I was on a handful of diff opiates that just weren't working. Taking Meth was a big decision for me (my sis has been on mmc for over 25 yrs) I started to lower myself with Drs knowledge 2 yrs ago I went down 10mgs every couple of weeks and when I got to 25mgs started going doing it by 5. then by 2.50mgs. I don't know if this was the proper way to do it but its what worked for me. Little withdrawal and I was able to work and keep up with my life. The biggest help was knowing I was done with it all. Its now been about 2weeks and I'm ok.. I wish everyone luck with this. Meth saved my life but I am so happy to be finally done with it..
To all of you who have posted here about your journey on methadone, whether you liked it or you didn't, your postings are helping others who are like us, opiate addicts.
Everyone's journey is different and the outcomes from doing a detox, however you choose to do it, will be different, some end well, others don't.
The point is sharing our experiences is helpful to us and to others and I thank you all for that.
|Hi there , I've been on the drink for 2 1/2 yrs . I'm now down to 3 mls, it has been along time coming that's for sure a very slow taper from 100 mls , I will drop to 2 in another day , would like to just jump off but what's another 2 wks compared to what I've done , I hate this program , I wish I'd known then what I know now , I feel like methadone stole my soul , my smile , my emotions , so much I haven't been myself since I started it , i have just feel numb , I realize it has helped so many but to go to meth to come off pills is just crazy, herion is another story . But anyways my energy level is depleted completely , I feel like I just can't move , my hands are heavy , my feet don't want to move , I work I have children a home to run. My question is how long will this lethargic feeling last , or is there anything I can take to boost my energy levels ( other than more drugs) it's been tempting , when I took opiates I felt like a machine , I was invincible , it's a hard feeling to forget ,,, please if anyone can suggest anything I'm very willing to try just about anything , thanx for listening|
keep the faith. I am sorry you feel the way you do about methadone. If it has kept you opiate free for the past 3 years then it has done what it is supposed to do.
If you want off that's OK too. Have a plan, make sure you have a support system in place with friends and family, if possible, then add your clinic doctor and staff and go for it!!! just take it slow and easy and before you know it you will be opiate free for life!
I have been free from heroin for many, many years thanks to methadone and I am raising 2 of my teenage grandchildren along with volunteering. At my clinic we (my husband and I) have weekly group meetings for those in mostly early recovery...It is our way of giving back. My life is so busy.
|Could someone please tell me of a successful, rapid detox program? Our 39 year old daughter is ready and willing, has been on 80mg for over two years. Her grandparents are willing to pay for her to enter a 60-90 day program, but none will take her on this level of methadone. If we wait, as we all know, our addict brains will find reasons to escape from changing...so, if anyone can help...
We can send her anywhere in the US, but she is living in California. Our granddaughters will be coming to stay with us in Hawaii.
Thank you for your help in advance...I know we aren't suppose to post personal info, but a text would be awesome or email....
I apologize for giving this personal information, but after four days of calling programs, getting referrals, and more referrals, and more referrals, I don't have an answer yet. There seem to be many scammy-type sites online that promise miracles...but I know that is not going to happen. We just need to find a good safe, hospital type setting for her to do a rapid detox-5-10 days or whatever it takes, then have her transferred to an inpatient program.
Thank you for any leads!
|U asked same question I've been wondering! Will be year&half for me in June. Hey we made it this far right? Just thinking of quitting was challenge right? Then past that,well for me, third night of agonizing hell, thats physically making it. s*** i thought i knew withdrawal. Night sweats, no energy,sick. Man had nI clue what dope sick was til then! Then that so slowly starts subsiding and psychological part has kicked In. Already had,should I say reality starts to set in at a point In time,and that's when a different psychological process starts. sorry u asked one question, yeah hard to find those people but right now we are those people with strength even though maey often not feel that way.|
|The 12 Steps of Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous help millions of addict/alcoholics stay clean & sober "one day at a time".
The 12 Steps continue to work for me for nearly 26 yrs.
You want quick, easy and painless. Good luck.
You want what millions have that treats our "ISMs" better than anything I know of then seek out your local AA/NA meetings.
All the best.
|to the parents looking for a 60-90 day detox program for your daughter,
Oddly enough when I read your post my first thought was to tell you to call the Dr. Phil Show in Los Angeles for a referral. Since you seem able to pay for her treatment it might be worth the phone call.
|I have detoxed from methadone 2 times and am down to 20 mgs on my way to a third time in my 65 years. The slow detox is the only way I have done it. not too bad. a few nites of restlessness. but that's what you would expect. it is a hell of a lot easier than cold turkey. Once it was after about a year. once in my 30's after about 5 years . I never thought I would be on it for 7 years this last time. If you detox slow you get used to the loss of "energy bump" and the increase in aches and pains. That's just not hardly as bad as people claim. The end of all the bad side effects make it worth it. For me the hardest part is the return of my hay fever. But I will take that trade off because the return of my sense of humor and sex drive etc., etc. are way more important . so don't worry about the small s***! This drug is very bad especially for older people. I am having heart problems related to methadone. I am glad to get off of that s*** and will choose anything , even suicide before going through another long methadone episode. I haven't done H in 30 years. I will have to stay away from pills even after surgery. That can be done. I have done it after a knee replacement.|
Thanks for sharing your story of detox. Once this topic got going it has been great to hear of all the successful detoxes!
Interesting, I have been on MMT for many years as well and losing my sex drive has never been a problem..... in fact I think it has gotten better as I age...I'll be 62 in a few weeks...so I guess I can thank my lucky stars for that. I wish my hubby could keep up sometimes, lol.
|Alfonso, you detoxed twice, from sound of it first time ct? If so how long did you make it that way? I couldn't handle taper&motivation only got down a bit. When kicked for good did super rapid detox/pretty much ct. If you did cold turkey first time did you go through paws? I didn't even know what the hell that was until I was there and read up about it! Going on year&half off& STILL feel like I have it. Not to extreme as 3 or so months off, but still fly into rages where I can't feel like I can't calm down, I don't know if that's normal. Those are the ONLY times when I want to drink,use whatever just to feel normal,not to be high since hadn't been in years.Sorry going through one of those moments now. Feel you on the sense of humor back though it's the best! Even if other people don't find what I say funny but I can crack myself up that's all that matters, you know?|
|I myself have successfully come off Methadone. I had a tour to Afghanistan in 2010 followed by a brutal addiction to oxies...This continued until 2013 while being sent in and out of rehabs and constantly relapsing. I just wasn't happy with life at the time...When I made my decision to try Methadone..I made it on my own ignoring all the horror stories of "That stuffs liquid handcuffs" Then I went up to 70 mg's which worked great for me didn't use once got all my carries...dropped 5 mg's at a time until 10 and then one mg weekly drop. Two days ago I had been noticing that on five mg's I was pretty much sober as a joke...I even stopped smoking pot because when i'm clean pot makes me anxious. However I must add...the entire time I was on methadone I was working out vigorously and I know some of you cannot do that due to actual injuries and such. So to make a long story short I woke up this past thursday (My piss day to pick up all the carries) and I said hey i'm good I don't even want to go down there today...so instead I hit the gym. Now it's the second day off 5mgs and I feel fine. Just sleep and feeling a bit cold would be the only side affects and plus it's kind of chilly right now anyways. Your mind can make you think up anything. I believe without exercise this would have been a very hard feat for me to conquer also with the help of a good doctor. I hear all types of things...Oh you'll be sick four days from now or three weeks from now because methadone stays in your bones and yada yada...i've heard the same about all opiates and frankly i'm not giving myself any excuses because all those horror stories you hear are likely to be people who just aren't ready to stop...or they just don't want to see you succeed. If I could do it trust me you guys can do it because trust me I hate life but methadone kept me clean long enough where I kind of just forgot about using.|
THANK YOU FOR YOU SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY!!!!
And thank you for your post!
Some days I feel like I am the only one here that says anything good about methadone. I am glad methadone helped you and what you said makes sense. I feel sometimes like I am always having to refute the myths, such as it getting in your bones, rotting your teeth, etc. One thing that should scare folks is what if there were no clinics?? Holy crap!
For those who want to stop using, I mean really want to stop using, will use methadone the way it is intended, following all the rules of their respective clinics and work tirelessly on getting their lives back in order. Those who don't work hard at making up s^*t about methadone and lies about the clinics and it screws it up for the newcomers who are bombarded with the "lobby doctors" and their never-ending lies.
Keep up the good work and hang tight!
|Christopher roy- props to you for second day? Maybe more by now off methadone. Your right the mind can do many things but the body doesn't lie. I'm a horror& Success story in one. My third night WAS HELL. I wasn't even aware at that time that it stays in Bone marrow for a year,so when I got electric shocks through arms nearly month off I freaked out. (Then was told year fully leave bone marrow ) vertigo,brain zaps, etc. Won't even get into mental hell. I don't think people use as an excuse to stay on methadone. Fact is everyone is going to go through some same w/d but not all the same. Sounds for you, so far you getting off methadone don't have it as rough as some,which is great. Honestly I can't see why anybody wouldn't want someone to succeed. I had a best friend who quit before me and was very happy. Over a year off myself I have friends on& I think they are sincerely happy for me, maybe because they think they will get to that point at some time. Take care, -Mary|
|Hi, my name is John and I was on methadone for over 3 years. I was addicted to all kinds of drugs from age 15-25 and eventually got really addicted to opiates. I found out about methadone clinics and discovered it was like a legal way to get opiates so I got on not knowing it would be the most addicting substance I would ever use. I would abuse it by taking all my take-homes at once and then buying other drugs to keep me from being sick in the following days. I was also buying other people's take-homes from them so that I was taking over 300mg a day on average. I walked around all day like a complete zombie, nodding out standing up. This went on for 3 years until my life was so miserable that I cried out to God to help me stop. He answered my prayers and gave me an unexplainable strength and I completed rehab. Now I have been off of all drugs for almost 3 years. I don't take any medications although I struggle with social anxiety from isolating myself in addiction for so long, but God is always there for me when I am struggling and I know He is the only thing I need to depend on, not psych meds. I am back in school graduating with an electrical engineering degree next year at the age of 27. I just go on these websites every once in a while to remind myself of how bad it used to be and to hopefully give hope to anyone struggling with the same thing. One more thing, I quit cold turkey from about 30mg and I don't believe in tapering below that because you're going to have to jump off at some point and it is better just to get it over with rather than prolonging the withdrawal symptoms. Above 30mg is very painful to cold turkey from though and I would recommend at least getting down to around 30 before going cold turkey. God bless!|
|Thanks for all the good posts and info. I got on methadone over a year ago, but only went up to,70ml. I wanted to take ad little as possible. I tapered down 5 ml per week, which was easy too fast and had to go back up to stabilize. Then I started to taper again. 3ml per week. And felt great the whole time! :-) surprising, I know. However, I am down to 3 ml, and staying to feel like I want to rip my arms off, like rls in my arms. I have a script of clonazipam, which helps immensely!! Just 2 mg per day. I can make it through a 10 hour work day then 2 hours of baseball every day still. But I am super scared of when I take my last side of 1ml. If it going to be horrible?? Or will it be about what Im going through now?|
|Posted by: marykat80 June 4, 2015, 7:27 PM|
|Hey, sounds like you've been doing good,staying active through tapering&that's awesome! So you're just starting to feel what you mentioned@3mg. Your still working &doing other activities,so that's great. How long you've been@3? If not long probably why. As far as how you will feel once you've left that last milligram, it's hard to say the drug will be leaving your body for good so yeah could feel a lot worse, though at rate you're going hopefully nothing extreme you know. I know hard as hell not to focus on what's ahead or what you may or may not feel like,but try not too. That's all I have right now for whatever it's worth, but you're doing it you know. Hang tight..... -Mary|
|I have experience in all types of opiods got off methadone dose 125 then injured myself woke up with morphine drip was on pills two years then methadone again 110 dose 2 years got off. theres more but thats enough info for you to know im not just playn around i did suboxone as well 2 years basically it is only good for 2days - a week anything else is just a doctor tryn to get rich since the slips cost 7 dollars a day min i got up to 3 slips a day before insane headaches and strange withdrawls forced me back to methadone so were clear just say no to sub.
without wasting your time here is how you get off methadone 2 ways first ill tell you the tricky fast way then ill tell you dr recommended way
fastway- start drinking at least 1 gallon of water each day for best results buy a protein supplement weight gainer with fiber if you can find it while your still doseing prep your body with protein and water for at least a week a month if poss start an excersize reg walk jog do some push ups sit ups whatever but make sure it gives you a good sweat also for at least a week-month. next get 50-100 5mg hydrocodone vicodin norco lortab whatev best way is to get your dose down below 20 but no more than 40 if you get take homes you can also use them to lower your dose even more if you take half for instance for one day there will be no change. On your first day without methadone start your day by poppin 4 hydro 12 hours later 4 more no more than 3 days next wait as long as you can after you wake up and take 4 hydros and 1 before bed for no more than 3 days then skip the one before bed. then 3 2 1 all for no more than 3 days then take a half a day for as many days as you have pills left because for an adict its to hard to look at a full pill bottle and say no now since you have been on the pills for at least 2 weeks and drinkin excerize vitamins protein your body is free of methadone and all it has now is a very minor addiction to a half a pill a day of hydrocodne but since it has been less than amonth you shouldnt feel any withdrawl symptons congradulations your clean... however the this part is the tuffest because your friends and family will still be taking meds and the addiction lasts a lifetime im sure now you realize getting off methadone is a beech so dont go back if u can help it
|the first time I got off methadone, I did it with the naive belief that being clean would solve all my problems. I don have any injuries that stop me functioning but I do have chronic fatigue and joint pain. After awhile when I realised that the problems were all still there and life got hard again, it took awhile, but I ended up going back on methadone and stayed on it for years.
I don't know exactly what happened this time around, but I just knew that I had to change something. Im thirty something days clean this time around and life is a whole lot harder, but I am determined to find some other solution to my pain and energy levels. There has to be a way to live a decent life without being stuck on pain medication.
I don't know what that is right now, but being on methadone made me stop looking for a solution. Not to mention the side effects it has and the restriction of being physically dependent. I just can't do it anymore. There has to be a way. I'm working on it, but I'm also trying to accept the fact that it's probably gonna take awhile, and it's not f***en easy.
I wish I had solutions or solid knowledge to offer, but I don't. All I know is that I can do this. Somehow, some way. I hope you guys find your answers.
By the way I'm in Australia too but a long long way from Perth.
|I've been on opiates for the last 13 years. The last 10 I have been on Methadone. I just wanted to get off all of my medications and see how my chronic back pain really feels. I started by cutting my dosage down for a week. It's been 20 days since my last pill. Things aren't getting any easier. I wish I checked myself into a clinic to get off of this stuff. It's just too hard to keep an eye on my three kids and take care of myself. I asked my pain management doc about the withdrawal process and he told me that I could go on a crash course and be clean in 24-30 hours. I wish I had researched how hard it is to get off methadone before I did. I would have set up my kids with the care they needed so I didn't have to do this on my own.|
|I feel for you mang, I'm lucky to have my wife and family around to take up the slack with my two kids. I also wasn't prepared for how long it would take to come good. It's only determination and willpower keeping me going at this point but yeah, not easy by any far stretch of the imagination. People keep telling me that it takes awhile but it will get better. I just have to stick it out and keep doing good things for my body.
You're a warrior for making it 20 days. But the battle rages on. The fires aren't as hot but it still burns. I firmly believe that if you can make it past 20 days then you can make it all the way. I hope you make it out of Shawshank mang, not everyone does.
|I've got no other choice. I'm a stubborn and will get through this. I've worked too hard to go back. I just wish I knew how long that I'm going to be feeling this way....|
|me too, God, me too. but everyone has a different experience or opinion on the timeframe. Frustrating as hell. I'm at forty something days now and in the past week or so I seem to have swapped insomnia and restlessness, for total exhaustion. So, like you I'm kind of watching the clock.
It's like being at work and you ask the boss, when are we going home today? and he tells you that you go home when the work is done, but he doesn't tell you how much work it is. Dammit, this post isn't very inspiring. Ok the good thing is that the discomfort has continued to ease day by day if slowly, and it really is a relief to be getting some sleep.
Before you go and get all riled up, take a minute and think.
How is his behavior? Most addicts spend every waking moment looking for drugs and whatever else to get the drugs they need to keep from being sick. If methadone has helped him stop that behavior then it may not be such a bad thing, aside from what you might hear or read.
Unfortunately some heroin addicts use heroin on top of their methadone, which kinda defeats the purpose but, it happens. Considering he has been on methadone for 10 years he wont be able to just stop all of a sudden and do well.
Please keep an open mind when addressing this even though I am sure you are upset that you didn't know. That in itself says something, if he were using and wasn't on methadone you'd have seen behavior that eventually would have made you wonder what he's been up to. And.... most likely things in your home, TVs, VCRs, jewelry, etc would be gone, pawned or sold for opiates.
Methadone does save lives and gives addicts a chance at a life they haven't been able to grasp because of their addiction. I know, because I am one.
good luck sweetie,
|Hi i know its been a few years since anyones posted but i have a question. I am currently on 50mg of methadone. I have been attending a clinic for 3 and a half years. Its passed by so fast. Ive been drug free. No dope only methadone i mean. I was tapered down to the 50mg i am currently on now. I am about to start tapering down more. Ive been stuck on the 50mg bc the clinic i go to in Louisville Kentucky is very strict on its rules. I had to show proof of not being pregnant bc i guess once you get so low on a dose if you were prego it could hurt or kill a baby. So anyway i put off tapering for a while. My question is will i be able to successfully taper down to zero from 50mg without horrible withdrawal symptoms and has anyone done so and succeeded?|
|Posted by: Mojo1 September 21, 2015, 10:43 AM|
Yes you can but take it slow I was on methadone for 4 1/2 years from 60mg to now I am 42 days since my last dose. Now it won't hit hard till about 15mg then you will feel it every mg you go down. I suggest you do a lot of research and get on a exercise program not lots of cardio will help I promise. You will feel wd most of the time you are tapering but just push through it because if I can then anyone can.
|Anyone who is considering a detox after being on methadone needs to have a plan. Depending on how long you have been on MMT may determine how difficult, or how easy, it may be. Like someone who has been on MMT for ,say, 5 years may or may not have an easier time than someone who has been on it for 10 years. It depends on the person.
The reasons behind wanting to detox will also have an effect. Someone whose plan it was to only stay on it for a while, using it as a tool in a plan of recovery and who is working a great recovery plan may do very well, while someone who isn't using it as a tool, who continues to test dirty for opiates, has no plan to get clean and stay that way probably wont succeed.
Another person who may fail is someone who is being pressured to get off methadone (possibly a family member or friend who doesn't understand how methadone can help) before they are ready,by saying they are trading one drug for another .
Please read Your Brain on Opiates. It can be found here by entering it into the site search at the top of the page. Great reading!
If anyone is considering detoxing, regardless of how long you have been on methadone, you need to have a plan. Please talk to your clinic counselor and/or your doctor and do it slowly. If you rush and jump off before you are ready it can be a failure. It CAN be done if it is done right.
|Hi! In response to "has anyone successfully stopped taking methadone". I think the same thoughts you posted about. Yes. I have stopped taking methadone. I hesitate to say successfully... But if by success, you might mean, never turning back to methadone after my "last dose", then yes. Ive successfully stopped taking methadone. But it seems that now that I "got my head right", or better mental stability, my physical health is in scary decline! Btw, I took painpills off and on for about 9 years. Realizing my addiction was becoming dangerous, I sought the help of a methadone clinic. Almost 5 agonizing, trying, and humiliating years later, I stopped one day. I was at 15mgs/day.....|
| I quit methadone about 5 years ago~! It was a rough road but a journey that was worth it! STAY POSITIVE! It just goes to show that we are tough! I had dreams about dosing @ the clinic for months after I quit taking methadone and stopped going to a clinic. I thought it was much easier to quit methadone (tapering slowly and steadily) than it was trying to quit taking pain pills on my own!
While I was in treatment, I just kept hearing stories and meeting folks who had been going to the clinic for 5, 10, 20 years! I have heard the term 'Lifer" in regards to methadone patients. But that just made me want to get out faster! I was in the program to change my life, and I did!
It is costly to continue going to a methadone clinic. You could buy a nice car for what they charge you every month. You are really just paying someone to keep you on drugs. Just remember why you started the methadone in the 1st place. If you started taking it to help END your addiction then do it. Use it the way it's suppose to be used!
IT'S WORTH THE FIGHT! keep going, stay strong. And don't surround yourself with your old 'friends'. Be honest with yourself and find the people who bring you up. You deserve sobriety. Hell I deserved it to, and I fought hard for it ;) Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|I am a recovery addict. I Moved from Missouri to get away from oxy and meth that i was doing daily (eventually). Came to California to pursue music and get away from the drug scene. Although i won't say I've made the wrong choice, boy did i not realize it was gonna be worse in la. For the first 7 years of living in san diego and la I was fine, getting of drugs was easy for me. Ive always just been able to use it recreationally when i want , i never considered myself a drug user at all. I got into a relationship with a girl with severe anxiety disorder, bipolar, hypochondriac , among other undiagnosed illnesses. 100 % of my relapse into drugs wasn't her fault , but about 89% of it was. During the birth and first year of my sons life i had started smoking heroine , recreationally at first , only to help numb the pain for ME , 26 year old boy, her 35 year old woman , working my a** of to pay for this girl and her driving my life crazy. Of course everything is for my son, so i used the heroin to help me deal with her while still being able to be a great dad and be able to deal with her, as weird as that sounds :/ I used heroin for only about 6 months tops, and realized ,damn it , I'm a heroine addict. Checked myself into a methadone clinic instinctivily and they started me at 40 mg, which in my mind was gracious, i slept great(real great) felt great, and most importantly , felt back to normal. Im now on 26 mg's (back up from 22mg ), and trying hard to come off of it. Im at a crossroads in my life where I'm trying to decide if methadone is something i should take for the rest of my life. I truly feel like it helps me and makes me the amazing father that i am, and without it, i would be s***. Im scared methadone will decrease my life span. I'm afraid i might be taking it the rest of my life, only because of how I'm having to take it, driving to this stupid clinic every single day at a specific time and if i don't go i don't dose. My mom wants me to see our family doctor in hopes she can prescribe me something that can help me . So this brings me to why I'm here, I'm wondering is there something that recovering heroine addicts / methadone users can be prescribed potentially for the rest of there lives. and is that okay ? is that going to effect my brain, my internals i already feel it does . any feedback would be great. I want to be healthy , want to be hitting the gym everyday . Do i need to focus on getting of every thing to be normal, or potentially do some people just need to be on something, and is that acceptable. Im not sure if there's even any md's in this field that will read this, but illl watch for feedback.|
|Ok so I tried to absorb everything..not sure how long you've been on methadone? The longer, the rougher it's gonna be. I fully understand what you are saying about feeling like a better father on then if you weren't. I sometimes think I was a better mother while I was on..BUT I've had people tell me otherwise, so that parts in our heads. That's not saying you can't be a great father on. That said I didn't realize the joys I would get in life and with my son once off..took time to feel that way, and I don't always, but hey even non addict parents feel that way you know? I wouldn't say i was flat/dull on methadone but I didn't have that full potential to enjoy little things. As far as medication to be on life after, try not to jump the gun thinking that's what has to happen. there are medications and herbal supplements, amino acids to help. clonidine for blood pressure & w/d (slightly sedating) do you have a plan on how you are going to do this? Gonna need support somehow somewhere (aside from online you know) your kind of a neighbor (I'm northern c.a.) anyway..you can do this, from your post I can gather that your thinking ALOT about what's gonna happen..I didn't so much but after I quit I did, if that makes sense. Worried that it did this or that to me, etc. Well if you have any questions, im here....but get support!!! wishing you the best really, -Mary|
I applaud you!!!
I was on for MMT for 30 years,highest dose being at 350mgs/day,and getting cut off was probably,no...it was,the hardest thing that I ever had to adjust to in this life...The physical wd's were off the rails...The psychological was the worst...Couldn't get a grip for many months...Was told I fried my opiate receptors and repairing that alone could take years...I'm not clean now,but not on mdone...I have a healthy respect for that drug...back in the day,it was THE choice of treatment for IV dope users,not to mention the fact that clinics are a "cash cow" business..Have you found that to be true?
You have my admiration for being able to get off and stay off!!!
I am so glad to read about your success...Most of us are lifers,of which I include myself,as I was cut off for certain reasons,and don't deny that I think about getting back on someday when I move from this rural area...
Thank you for your post...25+ years? what an accomplishment...something to be proud of.QE1
|I am 6 months off methadone after 4 years on and 2 years of heroin,9 years of pain pills before that. I can only say what worked for me in hopes that it could work for someone else. You have to mentally be done with methadone. I was so thankful for how I got my life together while on it but was tired of the crutch. I had everything in order from my job to my home,friends and responsibilities. The last blemish was my need to take methadone. It took me 1 yr to come down off 110 mg. I did 2 mg every week and when I felt weird I spoke to my counselor to stop the taper until I leveled out. There were plenty of times I didn't think I could do it or was just scared. I knew if I stopped I would be right back on the hampster wheel. I kept going and I got to 2 mg. My clinic called me in 3 times in one week for bottle verification and piss tests. I was so angry that they would f*** with me while on my last week that I just took the jump and never went back. I was feeling fine for the most part. I was tired and achy but nothing I didn't expect. Then 2 weeks came and all hell broke loose. Every single night my sheets were soaked from sweat. I had terrible muscle aches. I would kick my legs and arms for hours. I never pooped so much in my life. I would spend most of my nights in the bath tub with the hottest water possible just to try and relax my body. The few hours of sleep I got was on the side of the tub. After about a week and a half of that it stopped! I was able to sleep completely sober for the first time in 15 years. Its not all rainbows and sunshine. I still have my days when im very tired and achy but NOTHING will make me go back to that life ever again. I have way too much appreciation for what I have to ever lose it again. This is my second chance and I will not screw it up. Never forget your struggle and all the s*** u did to get and maintain your high cause the second you do there is nothing to stop you from doing it again. It felt good to get this out and I hope at least 1 person will read this and receive hope from it. You can do it but u have to want it more than u want to remain comfortable on methadone. I am stronger than I have ever been because of what I went through and I can honestly say that life sober is no more a fantasy that I always had. Good luck|
|I personally came off methadone 16 years ago, I had used opiates (heroin IV for 5 years prior to this and took methadone on top. I was on 80 mls daily and sleeping pills when i entered a residential rehab and was dropped to 30 mls the following day. Having support and like minded people around me was a great support and also being in the right mental place. Unfortunately there are so many hell stories out there of pain and vomiting etc that its a scary thought.
Yes i felt unwell with shivers aches and sickness but you survive. I work in the support services now and to my knowledge there are no reports of anyone dying from a methadone detox directly. For me the issue of limited success comes from methadone patients been given the wrong information and not getting the encouragement to attend for counselling etc along side their detox. It seems addiction services now park people for too long and put them up and down at any given opportunity instead of encouraging Recovery. Methadone has become just another drug that people can get at request with no boundaries or consequence if they do not fully engage with the support available.
It seems at times services just hold addicts in addiction so long as they collect their prescription and see a medic every 8 weeks all is fine !! from my experience this does not lead to recovery and by the time individuals want change they have been on medication for 10 years and their lifestyle is entrenched. I feel if support services had higher aspirations failing would be reduced. And if individuals had consequence in treatment as in life they would not become parked and actively work towards recovery.
|Just to throw this out there. I'm currently coming off methadone. I have been going down slowly but not a strict 5mg or 10mg a week jus kinda whatever I feel like going down. I'm at 18mgs right now I usually go down about 2mgs every other day or every 3 days. I've barely noticed any withdrawals trust if you go down at a slow rate then you'll be fine. It doesn't hold a candle to heroin withdrawals. Yes you get a lil hot and maybe a lil trouble falling asleep but it's not hard at all. Everyone is different but if you really want to be clean and use methadone as prescribed and take it slow coming off I'm sure you'll be fine|
|What's up everyone. I just recently got off of methadone after almost 4 years. My original dose was 180mg for about a year then slowly tapered down 20mg a month with maybe a month off(without going down) until I hit 80mg.stayed on 80 for a bit, then went down 10mg a month until I hit 20mg.then got a job and found I was burning through it. Feeling like s*** by end of day, new job and s***, so I went back up to 40mg. Year goes by, my Medicaid ended and I now had to use insurance from work which my program doesn't take. So I said it f*** it, do what u have to, I'm not renewing any insurance that u accept and j don't want to be transferred. They dragged their feet for almost 3 months before they finally gave me discharge letter and started a super fast, by the f***ing way, decrease of 10mg every 3 day. It's now 3 days since my last dose of 10mg. Been taking s*** ton imodium, vitamin c, a little 5htp and lots and lots of Marijuana concentrate. So far feel OK, OK enough to go to work and today I felt a little better.|
|I did not read all of the many replies on this post so I probably am restating something now, but having just tapered from a prescribed 60mg per day for over 10 years, I found it actually not hard to taper rather quickly (still was months) down to 10mg per day stable for two weeks. And THEN it was as easy as falling off a log to get to zero per day by cheating and switching to subutex... all I really did was wait 40 hours (which they say is risky) until I just started to get real uncomfortable and then switched bada bing bada boom as easy as pie. But that probably was not really the answer you were hoping for I am guessing ...because now I still have THIS to get off of...how hard will THAT be?? Don't know. Is it
better? Seems like I am less the slave to sudden need to dose, but it has only been a week so I am still figuring this out as I go along... IF it got someone free of "the clinic" hassle then that seems like something a lot of people on MMT would want to check out. I was worried the mdone was destroying my memory and mind and taking years from my life ...is sub any better or maybe worse in some way? |Queen Ebeth you win for the highest dose of Mdone I have EVER heard of! THREE HUNDRED FIFTY mgs per day??? Maybe literally enough to kill a horse every single day?? (or at least a donkey??) Man, what is left of your body now? Makes my 10 years at 60mg sound like baby drops! But then I do have a wiped out liver so maybe my lower dose effectiveness was from failure to metabolize and you are the olympian of metabolic wonders! I heard of this child that had never even been treated with opiates, was in agonizing pain where they just kept upping and upping and upping the dose I forgot how high but I want to say it was like a hundred times normal before the child got relief ...super metabolism? Abnormal lack of receptors? Who knows? Just shows how all the presumptions for people and judgents for why some people crave and others are repulsed are only that, just presumptions based on limited sampling and conjecture ...cause everyone is different...no? Rightly judging another becomes somewhat impossible I think anyway
|Posted by: Dougiequick March 13, 2016, 1:36 AM|
|No quick luck finding that case for that child but in searching I immediately came across a page re "practical pain management" ..check out the DOSES!! Particularly the one man in 2nd case below that was actually given "960mg/day OxyContin, methadone 180mg/day, plus Dilaudid 96mg/day (total of 2004 morphine equivalents/day). He continued to have significant pain, but obtained sufficient relief that he could function. On his last visit, he was still driving and he was still raising his two children. Mr. D was compliant throughout, with no abuse or misuse issues. about the massive dose
Case 1: Patient who was stable on ultra-high doses. Mr. M, aged 67, was referred for ongoing care when he moved from another state. He was born with myelomeningocele and spina bifida and, in young adulthood, twice had surgery because of pain related to a tethered spinal cord. Nonetheless, he had been employed until he suffered a work-related back injury 19 years prior to the first visit. He was seen at several pain clinics and it was determined that additional surgery would not help, so he was begun on opioids. At the time of his first visit, he was on sustained-release morphine, 1200mg/day plus hydromorphone 8mg up to 6 per day for breakthrough pain (total of 1392mg morphine equivalents/ day). He walked using a brace and cane, but did not drive. Mr. M was continued on exactly the same regimen for the 23 months that he was seen at the clinic. His pain varied but was often as low as 4/10. He was compliant and there were no abuse or misuse issues.
Case 2: Patient who required several dosage increases. Mr. D was 47-years-old when he was first seen at this clinic for chronic back pain related to a motor vehicle accident he experienced at age 15. He had recently been seen at a university pain clinic, which recommended that his current medication regimen be continued. This consisted of sustained-release oxycodone (OxyContin®) 320mg tid (equivalent to 1440mg of morphine/day), along with temazepam 30mg qhs for insomnia, celecoxib 400mg/day for pain and inflammation, baclofen 10mg qid for muscle spasm, and fluoxetine 40mg/day for depression. He had already received several courses of epidural and facet injections. He was ambulatory and drove his car. He had recently been accepted for Social Security Disability after a career as a school administrator. He was a divorced single father who was raising his two small children. The patient was continued on the same dose of OxyContin, 960mg/day for the entire time he saw the lead author—83 months (6.9 years)—but, because of increasing pain, he was subsequently also prescribed methadone, as well as hydromorphone for breakthrough pain. During his last 20 months of care at this clinic, he was on a combination of 960mg/day OxyContin, methadone 180mg/day, plus Dilaudid 96mg/day (total of 2004 morphine equivalents/day). He continued to have significant pain, but obtained sufficient relief that he could function. On his last visit, he was still driving and he was still raising his two children. Mr. D was compliant throughout, with no abuse or misuse issues.
So this is hour 132 of being off methadone.
I started doing pills 10 years ago. Oxys, percs, morphine, then to heroin in June 2013. I finally went to a rehab in May 2015 for 30 days. Came home, two weeks later I went back to shooting up. Continued until October 2015. Started methadone November 2015. Did very well through the holidays. As a mother of 3 and a woman who has a man that loves and supports her (mind you, my man has never even tried a cigarette before) I decided I was going to get all of the devil out of my body. I want a all natural lifestyle. Now I still go to counseling, that's very important and meetings but I got myself down from 70 mgs a day to 30 mgs a day before coming off. I planned for this a bit. I took my last dose at 11:30 AM Monday. It is now 11:30 pm Saturday. Last few days have been a bit hard. Tiring. Frustrating. But I got through it. I took Tylenol and ZZzquil at night.. I have felt fine all day today. So there's hope!
Much much love,
|Sunshine , that is great news, keep at it, please come back and update us on how you are, i will pray for you, support is a key factor from what ive read, i myself am very close to jumping off methadone im at 12.5mgs, did you jump off at 30mgs. What have you done to combat any wds, from what everyone tells me on here day 6 thru 9 or even 12 are the hardest , mayb the fact you werent on it long helped , ive been on it for a little over 7 years. I am scared , but i am also a father , and need this to happen for myself and my daughter, so we can start to build a great life.
I wish you all the luck , just know when it gets hard there are others out there doing the same thing and making it , and so can you. God Bless , please let us know how your doin.
|I attend NA/AA meetings regularly. I just returned from one now.
I sat with about 35 other folks who are "doing it" daily through The 12 Steps.
I personally know hundreds at the meetings in our area,
many with decades of clean/sober time and getting better.
I am no longer alone in my disease, I am with the others on the way to recovery.
Do you know what it feels like to sit in a group of 20-30-40 who think/feel the same as you?
You'll find them at AA/NA
All the best.
So its hour 150.. 6 days 6 hrs 59 mins and like 40 seconds...woke up sore. Took Tylenol felt fine. Stomach started to hurt..took Imodium once. Feel fine. Alittle tired. Drank a redbull. A few shivers but I manage to take my new born son, 2 year old son, 4 year old daughter, 13 year old step daughter and my fiancé to lunch at a nice restaurant and chuckie cheese. So if I managed to have the energy for that I feel I'm doing fine. Yes jumped off at 30 mgs.
|Posted by: soulscapex March 20, 2016, 7:39 PM|
|papa bear i wish i could attend them , the only one i found in my area says closed by it ,, whats that mean,
Sunshine, that is very impressive, you give me hope . Ive been on methadone so long, i dont know what wds feel like anymore. Keep it up, your almost out of the woods.
|Closed meetings are for members only.
Open meetings are for anniversary celebrations etc and the general public can attend.
If you say you are a member then you can attend:
AA's Third Tradition: "The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking."
anyone who wants to get sober/clean can attend closed meetings.
All the best.
|I was on 80+ mg for over 5 years, and ive been off that and alcohol for 2 years. I'm currently in my early 30s. I found a rehab in MI that detoxed me inpatient to zero in a month. That sucked but my will to break free and regain control of my life drove me to bodybuilding. The endorphins from intense physical exercise x2 a day, 7x a week carried me through post-acute withdrawl, but one must be extremely motivated. I cut back to just 5x a week gradually as the anxiety lessened. I couldn't have stayed away from opiates unless I also quit alcohol and picked up intense cardio sessions. My sleep is just now normalized, spent almost a year on lexapro which helped a ton early on, dropped trazodone and buspar 7 months ago. I feel better now than I did before using. Also, your diet is extremely important, I recommend lots of omega3, and coconut oil.|
|I'm trying to come off methadone right now. I've been on it for 5+ years and now I've had enough. I with graveyards shift and get off work at 8:00 am so it's hard in the early mornings cause I go threw withdrawal almost every morning for a couple hours before I dose. Any ways I planned a 2 week vacation from my job and no one at my work knows about it. I planned on doing it cold turkey and on my really bad nights I'm going to take anything I can get to make it easier.|
|I just got off methadone. was doing few 30 oxy a day before. Came to relize it wasnt taking me anywhere in life and needed to move on. Took me 4 months or more to go little by little at a time but was worth it cause i felt minimal withdrawal when off. Only my sleep was scewed for 3-5 days cause of restless leg and arms but that stopped after a few days. Now I feel fine and can sleep fine a almost a week later. If you think u are or will be ready to get off start tapering down right away little by little untill below 5mgs and u can get off. I was at 60mg and went down 2 mg/week till i got to 20mg then did 1mg/week till below 5. Stayed at 3 for a whole week then got off at 3. I was a long process but worth the time and $ to not feel horrible and get off the right way. It can be done. It takes 3-6 months depending on where you are but it can be done. Just do it little at a time and let your body keep adjusting week to week and month to month. You will feel irritable at times just stop taper for 1 week or whatever is comfortable for you the continue the toper. Go slow as right for you and you will get off if u want it!! Good luck!! IT CAN BE DONE!!!|
|I have been clean of heroin, 3 year, 4 month and have been clean of methadone nearly 8 months, I have started the gym and trying to keep myself busy. Anxiety and lack of sleep have been really bad, but it was time to get myself sorted out. Some days i dont want to get out of bed, im 32 years old and have wasted enough of my life using gear and living chaotic life. The doctor has me on a 2mg diazapam but i think its not helping any. Is there anyone out there who has been thru similar experiences and anyone who can give me some advice on medication that helps with mood and anxiety, iv tried anti depressants but gave them all up as they were making me worse. There is a good chance that i will be working soon and would like to try some sort of medication that will help me when im due to start work and having a bad day, this feeling is horrible when it comes on and when i start working, its hopefully gonna get better but i think that i may need some medication until i feel strong enough|
|Posted by: marykat80 May 12, 2016, 12:36 AM|
|Ron, first off congrats on your sobriety :) the anxiety and everything that goes along with it f***ing sucks!!! Yeah if you don't think the valium is helping, then exactly what's the point. Were you taking this only AFTER stopping methadone though? If so it may have been (helping) and you just didn't realize, you know what I mean? Guess I'm wondering how long you have been taking. When I got off methadone I was already on klonopins, so obviously did NOTHING. Was at 2mg went up to 3 and still nothing so went back to my regular dose at that point. A few months off I was prescribed ativan/quicker acting and did help. I knew if I kept taking I would just build tolerance so took very sporadically and still had overall anxiety anyway. I was EXTREMELY nervous to go back to work three months off, so I know how you feel. I don't know what you've been doing, think you said exercising. Are you getting out and keeping active? I think for us addicts too much time is the WORST. Plus just building that anticipation on getting back to work makes the anxiety THAT much worse. honestly as far as meds go I'm kind of anti-pharmaseutical right now. (Maybe hypocritical as I still am on a lowered dose of anxiety meds) but yeah I just don't feel right recommending anything in the way of that right now. though I will ALWAYS suggest 5htp, though may make you sleepy. Try to keep your brain busy...and try not to premeditate what may happen down the road far as work is concerned. You've had the strength to to this..so everything else is nothing. (Just KEEP telling yourself that, I do same for myself) -Mary|
|Thanks Mary. i am becoming the same about pharmas, I was using for over 5 years and stopped in prison, prob the best thing that could have happened to me actually. A good 2 years away getting sorted out. I have never been this clean for a long time so i was expecting anxiety. i am gonna have a chat with the doctor and see what he thinks, i have been offered sleeping tablets. there is no chance im gonna start down that road, as i started smoking weed and taking pills at school so it would not be a good idea. The 2mg diazapam isnt either. Things are getting better every day and there is no chance im gonna f*** it up after everything iv went thru getting off this crap. Iv been taking vitamins and pro biotic and like i said before going to the gym and keeping myself busy, iv got good friends around me who don't use, it sounds like the best thing is grim and bear it. thank for replying so quick|
|roboy , hello, im in day 12 of this wonderful process of healing, i asked about pro biotics on another forum and no one said they used them, or knew anyone who tried them thru this, does it help for the stomach problems. thats really my only complaint, i had a big breakfast this morning and it just destroyed my stomach . for about a few hours, i just went and picked up some protein shakes , and on the anxiety front , ive dealt with it for years i talking 20 years , i was on all the meds from benzos to anti and none worked, i use a therapist now who teaches me ways to deal with it , so maybe thats a choice , i dont use any meds for it , i was so bad i wouldnt leave the house, and just a few days ago it came back in the middle of this , i was afraid to leave, for fear of getting sick out in public, she called cause i missed my appt , and we talked , and would you know the next day i left the house , went to my daughters daddys breakfast at her school, i refuse to be a prisoner of my mind. now dont get me wrong i still have bad days with it, but its short lived and if you take a moment and question it , and take away the what ifs, it will turn into i can , and i will. thats been my motto thru this , i started doubting myself at the begining, and it was fear. but fear can only control us if we let it. im by no means 100 percent , but someone told me once fake it , till you make it. and thats what i do , just did a whole grocery run today. just thought id give my two sense on anxiety .|
|I wanted to share my story with you guys. (:
I was a heroin addict for 2 years. So I started going to a methadone clinic. My highest dose of methadone was 115 mg and that was when I started tapering down. I was going down 10 mg a week until I hit 35 mg. and once I hit 35 mg I went down 3 mg a week on a blind dose. I started feeling withdrawal symptoms when I got to 20 mg, so I decided to go down 1 mg a week until I was completely off. The last 5 mgs were the hardest out of it all just because I felt some what uncomfortable. It really wasn't that bad! I truly believe that a lot of withdrawal symptoms are mental, because anytime I would think about how low of a dose I was at I would start withdrawing!!! I have now been off of methadone for a month and have had absolutely no problems. There is hope. You just need to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Everyone is capable of tapering off of methadone, you just have to believe in yourself!
|Hi, I do have a topic saying this but this looked like a good topic to join and maybe get the help I so desperately need... Original topic is Methadone, Britlofex, HELP! But I dont know if anybody can help.
I am 25 and was addicted to herion/ crack (speedballing) for around 7/8 years. in the last 2 years I began to take pre-gabs from a friend, morphine and other medicines inc diazipam, zopiclone.
I am no longer using illegal substances and After my sons dad was sent to prison yet again. I decided to uproot and move back to London to be near family. My son is staying with my mum where I was living over 200 miles away which is really hard.
I am on Mirtazipine for the depression and am down to 40ml of methadone. I decided enough was enough. there was too much abuse in the relationship (drug abuse and domestic/psyc) So when he was sent to prison yet again I decided i was going to leave. I have tried before and succeeded in getting clean for short periods but nevery really off the methadone... I also always went back when he was released.
I want to know what my options are when trying to get off of the methadone... I have heard of britlofex and would really like some information if anybody can help. do they work..? do they really help the withdrawal symtoms,,,? and how do you take them, I heard you take 1 one day , 2 on day two and 3 the next etc... then reduce again?
I have heard good and bad things about them and have looked online but its all wikipedia etc. I would like to hear from real people. I know everybody is different but i would just like to hear others' views. Britlofex is not actually legal in US i don't think but is here in the UK...
Sorry for spelling/ grammer mistake, i have to be quick.
Thank you and I hope somebody writes back :-)
|I had to detox off of methadone and it was the most horrible thing that I've ever experienced. It is soooo much harder to detox off of than oxycotin. It took me almost 3 months before I started to feel "normal" again. I had the worst hallucinations in the beginning. And after that passed, then it just felt like my head weighed 100 pounds. I didn't think I would ever get through it. I laid on a mattress for a week and just hallucinated. I couldn't eat or drink anything, must less get up. It was terrible.|
|Hi have been off methadone for 45 days ( know tgat isn"t much but can only take it day by day! I got really tired of the life -got in argument with my supplier who btw was a controlling bitc* -so went to clinic - let me g backwards forgive me -had got myself down to 15 mgs on my own! So went to clinics and would not start me on any less then 30 -then wanted to up me weekly which I refused. After a month I decided I wanted the monkey off my back! They would not down dose me quickly enough so with the help of my doc I did it my self. My doc gave me clonidine patches (which lower ur blood pressure) But the withdrawal was nothing!!! I felt like I had a cold that is it!!These r miracles. Would not recomm
end them for people just wanting to get through when they r just trying to get there next fix but for people who really want it they r great! Since I wanted it so much was surprised at the after effects which hit 3 weeks later! My body screaming FEED ME! also the drug dreams also the anger -which I am still dealing with- have gone out looking for fights, mind u I am 12o lbs and barley 5 foot tall! I don't care sometimes! Ready to take anyone on! Really wasn't expecting all this -guess it was very naive of me considering I have been an addict for over 12 years. Mostly I wanted to get the word out about these patches -really r miracles! Thanks for your time -all my best to one and all!
|I have been on methadone for a little over 3 yrs now. My highest dose was 55 mgs. I've been trying to wein myself off of it recently. I'm now down to 39 mgs. So far I haven't felt much different, maybe slightly irritated easier and I have noticed alot of headaches. I'm scared, I know I have to do this my husband already came off of it and he is pressuring me. He had no problem at all coming off (at least that's what he's telling me) I guess he's being truthful because honestly I didn't see him act like he felt bad at all. He smokes weed though and he smoked the whole time he was weaning himself off of it. I don't smoke weed. I never have liked the way it made me feel (paranoid mostly) unfortunately I always liked the harder drugs! When I went from pain pills to heroine for the first time that's when I decided I needed help before I started shooting it into my veins. I'm reading all of these posts and I'm getting discouraged I wish I got clean without this stuff! If anybody has any encouraging stories for me I would very much appreciate it. Good luck to all of you and thankyou!|
|I can't thank all you enough for taking the time to post your experiences in getting off of methadone. I have been on it for 2 and a half years, my highest dose was 70 mg, I'm at 60mg now and have been trying to prepare myself mentally to start the process of tapering down and getting off of this for good. I am truly scared of what's in store for me. I have read so many horror stories of the awful effects of the withdrawals and how hard it is to come off of methadone. A long story made quick I was hit by by a drunk driver 4 years ago and after many unsuccessful surgeries to my back I was put on OxyContin at a pain management clinic. The doctor there just kept upping my dose and after multiple visits where I refused to go up and wanted to pursue other options in conjunction with or as an alternative to the pain medication he threatened to release me as his patient. My highest dosage at the end of my treatment with him was 30mg twice a day. When I decided I had enough of the pain pills I feel I made the worst decision of my life in going to a methadone clinic to get off the pain pills. I know these places may have truly helped others in their addictions but my experience with them has been one of disbelief and regret. The lack of educated staff in a place that dispenses such a powerful drug is a travesty. Now I will take a lot of the blame for not educating myself before choosing to start taking methadone but you put your trust in those who promise you such good outcomes when you start there and they fail to mention how hard it will be for you to get off the methadone. They encourage you to keep going up on your dose until you are getting 24 hours of "full relief ". I finally stopped going up at 70 mg after finally educating myself as to where I should be on my daily dosage. The atmosphere is at these clinics is punitive not therapeutic. I am treated as as a junkie looking for my next fix, not some one who had a physical dependence to pain medications and was looking for a way to get off them. Again I accept the responsibility for not pursuing other options. I have worked in health care for almost 20 years and should have made a more educated decision. I am going to start going down again in a few weeks and I am so apprehensive about it. Part of it is the physical misery the other is that I can't take extended periods of time off from work and I worry about not being able to function at work. Wish me luck and I will try and post updates on how I'm doing and I thank all of you on this forum for sharing your stories, they have inspired me and given me the will and determination to be free of methadone.|
|It's been very helpful reading what other people are going through. Methadone withdrawal is difficult. I just made y last drop and I completely off. I was on a quarter pill twice a day. Getting so low before the final drop doesn't seem to make it any easier. I know if I can get through this next week or so I can do it. I was looking for chat rooms for people to talk with while I go through it. I am finding I really need some support and really don't have any at home. Can anyone recommend a place where I can log in and chat live with others. I know reading others stories help to to understand what I am going through and that I am not alone. I have been on methadone for almost 10 years and have slowly tapered off the last few. I have student teaching and will be working outside of school hours and not sure if I can handle it along with PAWS. Just looking for a place when I am not feeling to strong to talk with others. Student teaching starts for me shortly and I will be working outside of school hours, just looking for a little strength and support to get me through this final withdrawal and tips on how some deal with it.|
|I have known several (3) people that have been kicked off government sponsored methadone programs. They are all dead. One was suicide by cop, another was just suicide and the third was an OD. They were all taking methadone to recover from heroin addiction.|
|Posted by: Hari Seldon August 8, 2016, 2:39 PM|
|I am posting again because I believe the government has greater responsibility when they enter into an agreement with a patient to treat their addiction with a drug that is more powerful, more addictive and has more painful withdrawal symptoms then the drug they are currently abusing. I used to be a heavy crack cocaine abuser ( I was homeless and smoked every day I first smoked crack when I was watching O.J. in his low speed chase on live TV, I now have been clean since 2008.. I did start smoking marijuana again in 2010) and I sometimes used heroin but I was lucky and never got wired to heroin. I have seen many people try to kick heroin but have never seen any success without the use of methadone. When the government accepts you into a methadone program they KNOW that there is a high probability that the patient will at some point lapse back and use heroin again. I do not know how it is everywhere but when my friends tested positive for heroin while being on the program they were kicked off and left to fend for themselves. I find this to be negligent and unacceptable. When the government accepts responsibility for your treatment by putting you on a stronger drug they should be in it for the long haul. I would like to know if anyone else has lost friends in this manner and ideas on how to stop it.|
|Posted by: constantine August 8, 2016, 10:17 PM|
|Don't know where you are but most programs usually have a 3 strike policy..also...if your using on methadone then your doing it on purpose..not raising your dose...methadone program aren't baby sitters...you have to work with it like anything you do to stay clean..not even the government can stop us if we want to use...it's not their responsibility. .nor anyone's ...it's ours ...methadone program is a tool....nothing more...you have to want to stay clean...if you don't. .it's on you...back to square one...and we all know the consequences. ..|
|I'm going to be a success story, I had been on methadone 8 yrs. after an addition of opiates. I did do herion prior,but opiates got me to a methadone clinic. I had gone cold turkey while in custody a few times. I finally said enough, I mentally got ready to detox .... I married a beautiful woman 4 year's ago,meet her on Moco space. She has never seen someone on methadone,but I also abused pills to make me remain numb. After two year's she left me. She did warn me,but I thought she was joking! Well I just recently found her and we have agreed to try to fix our marriage so I asked her for her help ,she researched methadone detox and to my amazement she has helped me be comfortable, I'm in my first week of detox, I was on 110 mg. I do take xanax and it helps,but all the other stuff I take an do has done wonders for me. I love my wife for not giving up on me and I love her more for backing me up with my detox. So with that, it can be done. Peace ...|
ive been on a reduction program and am currently on 4ml of methadone .. feel great and will go down to 2ml in 10 days ...
the final week i get a "care package" which include sleeping tabs,buscopan(stomach cramps ),quinine( leg cramps ),metoclopramide( any sickness ) and loparamide ( for the s***s )
many people have Successfully Stopped Taking Methadone and done correctly it can be done .. if your doing it yourself make sure you get help from a drug rehab/center if you need it ... in the uk it free if your not working
|I did the worse thing possible trying to get off of 75mg of liquid handcuffs (methadone) by doing an 8k rapid detox.. wasn't able to get high for three months because of a neltrexone ball they sew in you so you can't get high off any opioids. throwing up all three months...went back on methadone...got off by taking suboxone. suboxone, for me, didn't give me a euphoric effect but just the smallest dose would keep me from feeling sick. EXERCISE EVEN WHEN YOU DONT WANT TO!!! It will help rid the body of the toxins quicker, hence, withdraw, not as bad. still going to suck but stay strong. that feeling of want goes away. if I can only quit smoking weed lol...joking if you can quit methadone, you can quit anything!!|
|I went up to 50mg of methadone and have been going down since last October. I'm now on 7mg, and I'm ok, but I am starting to feel little things. The key to my success is I've set up a sober network, with a counselor, psychiatrist, and support. Noone can do this alone, and there's plenty of resources accessible for a permanent methadone free life. That being SAID in my experience there is two key factors, one is you did not get this way overnight and your not going to get better overnight. Second, take responsibility for your actions, your best efforts as an active user,put you where you are, so stay real and focus on positive.|
|I agree getting off the methadone can be done it takes time. I have been off for 1 year and almost a month. The big key for me was my faith in Jesus Christ, and through Him I was able to exercise and that was huge for me because I wear leg braces. But exercise is a big factor and you need to exercise even when you have a lack of sleep and when your sick. I know its hard but do it as much as possible. Look it has taken a whole year but just live by the day at first then by the week then by the month. The post are right didn't get where you are overnight and this will be a hard fought battle but it can be done!!!|
|So I know this is being posted late AF as in like 4 years , but yeah you can die off of eliminating methadone all together I was working and couldn't get my drink even knowing this 3 days prior to and drinking only half my dose so half of 140mg then I drank 70mg for 3 days and still collapsed on day 5 of having nothing. and lost vitals I woke in an ambulance after being defibulated ... so to answer buddies question you can infact die from methadone withdrawal it is actually the ONLY OP that can kill you from withdrawal. Sorry about the delay in response I hope you are doing better man. Me myself am back on the juice and still get sick. Ughh This s*** is true hell would've been so much smarter to just stay on drugs, and wean off, but without the necessary will power that wasn't an option... I just hate feeling trapped like I do with this bs. ughh FML|
|So Hi everyone it's 4am and my 5th day off methadone I was at 60mg for years and tapering down to 3mg. When I picked up my weekly dose on Tuesday I thought to myself this is it I'm going to stop taking it. I thought what really would be the difference going from 3mg to 1mg. So when I woke up Thursday I didn't take my dose and was really not sure what to expect. So when the first wd's started that day I went on the internet and started reading what everybody went through and was shocked that it takes 30 day's to feel better and sleep normal again and that methadone has the longest wd time. I wish my counselor told me what to expect when I started my detox down. I'm lucky cause my mom is and ER room nurse and happens to work with a doctor that does some work at my clinic so I called her and talked to the doctor and asked him and he said if I gets bad go see him. How to Know what's bad , I have seen bad wd's I'm not having it that bad just that feeling in your stomach that won't let you sleep and some cramps and diarrhea. The biggest thing for me is not being able to sleep. I'm up all night tired so I turn the TV off and 15min later the TV is back on. I really thought going all the way down to 3mg wouldn't be that bad but it has been and from what everybody else says I'm looking for at least a week of this and a month of bad sleep. I'll keep updating and let you know how it's going and any ?'s let me know --Brian|
|Hi I've been on methadone for 6 months and I want off. My highest dose was 50 and now I'm at 40 I've been asking my doctor to lower my dose more but he doesn't want to.. so I'm thinking of just stopping it on my own. Is this a bad idea??? Can someone please help me cause I feel trapped and I don't want to be on this. I want to be free. How long will I be in withdrawal? Please help|
|I am writing here as I do not no what else to do. I have been on methadone now for 14/15. Years I am currently on 60ml a day, I have stopped all other drugs and for the past 3 weeks only going to the chemist every second day, yesterday I went 3 days. But on 3rd day I had to take oralmorph. I want to stop my methadone but I have heard that the withdrawal is very bad and will last about 3weeks. I am considering stoping and going on to subutex or goingdo my own detox useing oralmorph and citing my dose each day. Does anyone have any advice on what I'm considering or any advice on stoping on such a high dose. I really need to come off this so any advise would help. Thanx.
|Methadone has a long a** half life...you won't feel much for the first days...some even go a week before the deep rattle hits...I wouldn't jump off the dose if you can taper...tapering slowly seems to work best..if u cross over to subs..make sure it has no naltrexon and your opiate free..or in wds before you try...sub board has more info...be safe.|
|I was on methadone for nearly 50 tears and have spent the last year or so tapering my dose from 70 to 10 mg. All these years I thought it was impossible to detox but all you need is a great deal of resolve and the knowledge that it is tough but possible. Doctors have never helped me but they may be able to help you if you can't do it yourself. Trust me - a life with methadone sucks.|
I have read all posts and am both nervous and excited and dealing with a bit of withdrawal. My doctor put me on methadone and percocet for sever migraines. I have been taking painkillers for over 20 years which I successfully got off of by myself because I hated what it was doing to my mind and body. I am on methadone but at a very low dosage of 10 mg a day. My question is will the withdrawal be just as bad as if I were on a higher dose. I have one pill left then I have none. I have been cutting the pill in half to not go completely without because my legs will not stop moving. I did not realize that sneezing was a part of withdrawal because I sneeze alot now. My stomach is cramping and I am agitated. This is off such a low dose, does it get worse?
Thanks for all your encouraging words.
|It may..Or may not I've known people on low dose that barely experienced much..And some that have..try not to keep focusing/reading to much into others. (Hard not to i know!) it is good to have an idea of what to expect..but everyone a little different. Yeah sneezing definitely common and the rls. I took benadryl for sneezing (And hopes to get some sleep) just remember everything will subside..
Take care, mk
|Hi I have been reading the posts I was looking up on the Internet the success rate of people detoxing off of methadone I myself and detoxing off of methadone I have been on it for almost 2 years I am an ex pill addict of many years and eventually started smoking heroin. I have been clean off of heroin and pills for a year-and-a-half methadone has helped me but there's also a lot of side effects too now that I'm clean and I have a lot of support I have decided to come cuz I would like to dark to be able to feel normal the methadone makes me feel like crap sometimes! I am working with my counselor and decided to come down off methadone only one milligram every week I have already come down for milligrams and not doing much of a difference but we'll see I know I have to keep God in my life and keep trying everyday and hopefully one day I will be completely off the methadone it does scare me because I started taking pills because of pain problems so I think my biggest worry is not being able to handle the pain but I did too be completely honest with doctors and and Tackle this issue the right way.|
