We were talking about smoking at our AA meeting this morning.

I quit alcohol and drugs in 1989 and it wasn't until 2005 that I quit smoking.
I had smoked for 50 yrs.

My wife quit smoking in 1994 and I knew I should quit as well. But I just couldn't...

In 2004 an AA oldtimer told me about when he had quit.
He said that his grandson said to him "Grandpa, you stink !!"
My friend took the cigarettes out of his shirt pocket and threw them away.

I went home that night and asked God in my prayers to have a change in thinking so I could quit as well. I prayed every morning and every night for a year.
New Year Eve 0f 2004 I was having a cigarette on the outside deck and something came over me that I was smoking my last cigarette - and it was.
I went to bed that night and never smoked again.

I guess my long post is "Ask God for help" ... HE worked for booze & drugs - and cigarettes.

Smokers Anonymous uses the same 12 Steps as AA. They work for whatever ails you.

Good luck.

Wow! I thought I was the only one who had been smoking for a long, long time! I smoked my first cigarette at age 6. I inhaled at age 8. I stopped smoking when I was 14 because I wanted to run on the track team at my high school. I didn't smoke again until I was 16. And I've smoked ever since. I have mild COPD, emphysema, (sp?) I also have asthma. Other than that, I've been fairly blessed with no really bad symptoms from 44 years of smoking. But now, my asthma is getting worse. I struggle to breathe at night, and often can't go to sleep because of the noise my lungs make. It sucks big time. I have no friends who smoke, so they are always telling me how badly I stink. I'm a junkie, but I have kicked other drugs much easier than cigarettes. They are so readily available that it makes it really hard to quit. Geez! I am so depressing!

I wish there were some rehab centers for nicotine addicts in the USA. Yes, we do have the best health care that money can buy. Enough said. I think cigarettes are evil and cunning. I want to quit, but willpower fails me every time. I hate addiction. It's killing me and a lot of people I know. There is one piece of knowledge I can share: The cravings only last about 20 seconds. If you can make it through all of those "20 seconds", I think you can make it. It's certainly worth the effort. How about this? I need to quit, you need to quit. Let's quit together. I'll be checking this forum every day for a long time. Let's lean on each other. How about it????

Peace...............

I have been smoking for 50years, I'm so sick of the addiction and feeling everyday something is about to happen to my health. I am also addicted to Xanax for about 3 yrs now.
My memory is fading I believe because of the Xanax & feel I'm not getting the calm feeling I use to get when first starting. I am unable to think clearing, constantly thinking something is going to happen & have no interest in socializing anymore. I am fighting several battles smoking, addiction to Xanax & depression. I feel like I'm not in control anymore & on a down would spiral....I started Zoloft 4weeks ago 50mg & don't feel any difference.

I am a smoker. I have quit before. have been on and off over past year. every pack will be the last! It is such a time waster, procrastinator, it saps my energy. but I love the first smoke of the day with coffee!. I will have to stop the coffee too! Quitting will save me $80 per month. Heavy smokers must spend a small fortune on smokes!

Im down to the last two.... lol

Distraction and substitution - find something else to do, something else to eat, keep busy. when I am busy, I dont think about it. I can even go for days with out smoking when I am with non smoking friends.

It is a slippery slop. Keep talking to Dr's and Nurse's of your want to decrease meds and find alternatives. idk what medical issues you have, but you must have something to keep you on the meds. so you may not be able to quit everything. the dr's may keep you on meds because that is what they think you want. keep asking about alternatives, someone in the medical field might have a suggestion.

Smoking - least needed thing in your life- so maybe that goes first. You have to change everything you can do in your day to keep busy and distracted.

Again, I dont know your limitations, and from watching stuff on TV, it can be very hard when your are stuck in your rut.

like a wheel gets stuck in a muddy rut and the rut gets deeper.
you have to get that wheel on a new path.

It took many years to get there, and addictive medicines. so it will take many years to get out.
Good news, you have time to improve. Every year better is a better year.

I just heard a statistic. People who were able to exercise for a few minutes, a few times a day, had the same improvements as people who exercised for a long period of time a few times a week. exercise can be as little as stretching at the counter top while waiting for the coffee to perk, or walking in place for 10 minutes.

hope this helps, I am not an expert, sorry for talking like I am.

Eleven Days since I posted that I was quitting smoking. Yup. no smokes since. I still think about that one good cig of the day. Whether it was the morning one, or the last one of the day.... or the one after work.... I dont have people smoking around me, so that part is easier.

But, I do not go and buy a pack, bc I only want one. not the whole pack. If I have them, I will smoke them all. I cant just keep them around. like the ice cream that sits in the fridge for weeks, or the cookies that I eat only one or two each day.....

I think of the money I am saving, and when I pay down my credit card I can buy the laptop I have been wanting, .....

Hi, I stopped smoking about 2 years ago. That was my second time quitting. I found it more difficult the second time so I made sure when I quit this last time I didn't go back. After a year of quitting I had cancer. That's when I knew I would never go back to smoking again. But I have promised myself when I'm real old and on my last legs. I will go buy a pack of Marlboro 100's and have a puff. It's a nice thought! But try those electronic cigs to help you quit. I used the ones called " Enjoy" the red pack. I thought they were pretty good. But just take a puff to get over the craving and then put it away. I kept one in my car and one in the house.i also made myself go outside to puff on it too. Don't get too comfortable with the fake ones or you'll just transfer your habit to them. It's true that you really feel better without cigs. I wish I had quit when in my twenties. Meant to say, I always found that after the 3rd day it was easier. So get by the 3rd day and then work to get a week under your belt and so on. It will be easier than you think. M.

A little over a month since I quit.... not too bad, I had cut back to two pack a week before I quit.
It still flashes thru my mind more than I thought it would. Tonight my son mentioned it being a slow time at work and possibly being behind in rent... my mind immediately flashed to - wanting to go to store and buy smokes asap!.... but I did not.

yeah, would not want to start that again. I figured cigs cost me $80 per month which is just enough for a massage, acupuncture treatment, or hightlights for my hair..... sounds like a good deal to me..... it is like found money!
