I'm only on Day 3 of quitting alcohol....so my plan is by next weekend at this time...preferably Saturday I want to quit smoking. I am putting it in writing so I see it and I can't ignore it. And this week I am going to read everything about how smoking is bad for me. I quit in the past for a year using the E Cig and Nicotine gum. At first the e-cig was enough but I couldn't smoke it at work...so I chewed the gum...not a lot of the gum I would bite a piece off of a square and that would last me 2 or 3 hours....All of that was better than smoking, I looked better, smelled better and best of all felt better about myself and my surroundings...my house, my car, my clothes. This board is not very active..so I maybe should start a diary on this....Next Saturday I think I will.

Hi Missy. I will be smoke free 2 years this coming January. I made many lame attempts to quit smoking but always went back to it .. I had a cough and went to the doc and was given a chest xray. It showed I have very early stage of copd. I was told by the doc that if i quit smoking it would not progress if I continued to smoke it would and eventually I would suffer the consequnces. That gave me the initiative to give it up. I did not quit the drink to die a slow painful death from another self inflicted addiction. The first week was terrible but I didn't kill anyone and no one killed me lol lol... After 96 hours nicotine is phsycially out of your system... after that it is a mind game. I remember reading that you like to journal so Make a list of reasons why you want to quit. write out the pros and cons and all the benefits of not smoking compared to the disavantages of smoking. LOVE being smoke free it is one of the best things I have ever done for myself.. where I live smoking is banned in public places and work places so it was difficult to smoke whenver i felt like one ....... it is a new found freedom and I get so smell like a rose as an added benefit :)

I love the last paragraph in AA's "12 Steps and 12 traditions" Step 7 where it states:

"The Seventh Step is where we make the change in our attitude which permits us, with humility as our guide, to move out from ourselves toward others and toward God. The whole emphasis of Step Seven is on humility. It is really saying to us that we now ought to be willing to try humility in seeking the removal of our other shortcomings just as we did when we admitted that we were powerless over alcohol, and came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. If that degree of humility could enable us to find the grace by which such a deadly obsession could be banished, then there must be hope of the same result respecting any other problem we could possibly have."

The 12 Steps are so much more than quitting drinking.

All the best.

Papa..I would like to acknowledge the blessing you have of finding the appropriate verbiage from the BB to help when needed. Very appropriate and very helpful today. Thank you. ;) I'm giving short answers because I keep getting a 403 error and I think it is because my replies are too long. Thank you :)

My doctor wrote me a script for Nicoderm patch just to see if it would be covered. Not surprisingly, it wasn't. So, I did a quick internet search for free quitting resources. LO and Behold, many states offer FREE counseling and nicotine cessation products.

1800QUITNOW

Free counseling and Nicotine patches, gum, etc. No income based questions.
