Recent genetic studies and technologies have improved the ability to monitor brain activity leading to a greater understanding of how the addictive brain behaves. This has made it possible to develop more effective medications for treating addictions.

Medications are a part of a professionally-directed drug and alcohol treatment program.  They are best used in conjunction with a support system such as a 12-step program or individual or group counseling or therapy. Holistic approaches such as amino acid supplementation designed to reduce cravings for alcohol and drugs can also be helpful (to learn more, see nutrition in the holistic approaches section).
