Hi to everyone on this forum. I wrote the following as part of my experience, strength and Hope for the alcohol forum but am posting it here as well just in case someone might be able to take something from it that might help...please feel free to share this with someone you know whom it might benefit.

Not only do we alcoholics have a drinking problem we also have a thinking problem. I speak for myself when I say I was one to see the glass as half empty instead of half full.I concentrated on what was wrong instead of what was right,of what I didnt have as opposed to what I did have..I was negative , gloom and doom ,bitter, angry and ungrateful and of course if you had my life you would drink too.. stinking thinking the kind which leads to lots of drinking. When we enter recovery we do more than just put the bottle down. we also have to learn to change our negative thinking patterns. This is not easy to do but with the tools that we are given in recovery it can be done and we can overcome our mental obsession to drink..
our mind is the most powerful tool we have. our thoughts will determine if we will achieve sobriety or continue to stay drunk. we literally become what we think and what we expect of ourselves. We are not responsible for the first thought that enters our head. we are however responsible if we give food to that thought. We don't have to feed, entertain, or romance the first drinking thought that pops in our head. we have a choice in feeding the negative thought or changing it. WE CAN CHANGE OUR THOUGHTS.As humans we are given that ability. so upon entering recovery we make up our mind that we are going to change our thought pattern and we work at ways to do it. we do this by attending meetings, doing the steps, reading material geared to change our outlook on life. For some of us such as myself we may need to have counselling and cognitive behaviour therapy along with much help from others who have walked the recovery road before us. For a period of time I wore an elastic band on my wrist to snap myself whenever a negative /drinking thought arose in my diseased brain to help me concentrate on focusing on something positive and to change my thought pattern. It might sound silly but it works. thoughts today will determine tomorrows outcome.one day at a time we can either build up or tear down.we can climb the mountain or sink in the quicksand of addiction. we can think our way in or out of a problem. when we wake up in the morning we cannot choose what will happen that day but we CAN CHOOSE how we will react to whatever happens..we can choose to deal with whatever happens sober or try to numb it by drinking.Sobriety must have a life of it's own if it is to survive. It cannot be dependent on what is happening around us. In life there will be ups and downs, losses, sickness, death. Life does not change when we get sober..WE CHANGE. our ability to cope changes. we learn to live life on lifes terms without having to get drunk.. we can be victims or we can be survivors. we can be grateful or ungrateful. we can be happy or sad, we can be at peace or be bitter, we can love or we can hate.. whatever we think ..we are. whatever we do.. we become.Make your choice today.. Don't listen to the lies of your disease. Stand up for yourself. YOU ARE WORTH IT..
