I have never been a pc and spoke of this to anyone. I have been on methadone for aprox. 6 yrs now. And I am forever trying to get lower too. I am at 45 ml. now. I have come to the bottom of everything no money no job and 2 kids to look after on my own. Now I have the oppurtunity to go to live on the beach in St.Croix virgin Island with my dad. Unfortunatly I am still on methadone and I have heard it is nearly impossible to go off it cold turkey, well that its hell really I have heard. I don't think they have methadone there either..

Just wondering if anyone out their has tried to go off methadone cold turkey and how they did. I really thank anyone who can help me out .. Desperatly seeking advice :) Lisa

I have not had any experience with Methadone, but have heard from others, as you have, that is is very diificult to get off of it CT. Hopefully someone with experience or more knowledge will come by soon.

I understand the situation you're in, and the opportunity you have. There's no easy way to stop taking methadone quickly. I would not recommend you do this; the results tend to be not good.

The good news is, is that the Virgin Islands are a U.S. territory (as I'm sure you know) and have a "state methadone authority". That's a pretty good sign that MMT is available there. The contact info is as follows:

Jaslene Williams
Assistant Director
Virgin Islands Division of Mental Health
Charles Harwood Hospital
St. Croix
Virgin Islands 00820-4370
Phone: (809) 773-1311 ext. 3012
Fax: (809) 773-7900

This is not a clinic, but a governmental appointee in charge of overseeing their methadone program. However, they can probably give you information about any clinics that are down there. Please call down there and see what they tell you. If you can make arrangements to transfer to a clinic down there, you can start a taper as soon as you get there, or even before you leave. Have you talked to your counselor about a taper? Your chances of success are so much greater that way, and you can have the ability to function at a new job in a new environment without debilitating withdrawal.

Have you considered suboxone, or looked into suboxone treatment in St. Croix? If they've got a methadone clinic, chances are they've got sub doctors. The dose you are at now is low enough that you are a good candidate to make the switch. Suboxone, don't know if you know this, is scripted at a doctor's office and picked up at a pharmacy like any other med. Also, some people who don't like methadone for whatever reason might find sub a better fit. It is also commonly used to finish a methadone taper. Just a thought, if tapering off methadone doesn't work out.

If I can help you with more info about any of this, let me know. Good luck.
