I've decided to finally do something I've never done.

And papabear.....you'll be proud to hear this.

I'm going to go to my first NA meeting Wednesday night. I'm going to try the 90 in 90.

I've been fighting this battle for too long..... And my way doesn't work.

I'm either on pills, in w/ds, or clean and sober. I'm never actively working on "recovery". I am not religious (not necessarily an atheist though--just not into the whole "big guy in the sky" thing, I don't like people for the most part, am pretty reserved in groups of strangers, etc. I've ignored so many suggestions on online forums to attend a meeting and try the 12 steps.

I can come up with every possible excuse in the world to not go. But I'm tired of feeling so spiritually bankrupt. It can't hurt. Worse thing that could happen is I find its not for me - then oh well. At least I tried. But who know, it might change my outlook and attitude. We will see.

I'll definitely update on my experience if it helps anyone out there.

Any advice is welcomed. I've been told by my opiate recovery Reddit community to not hold any judgements and be open minded in the beginning.

Wish me luck.

Skeeter,
I think you will like and find that they are very open-minded and understanding.
Doing the 90 in 90 will be very helpful. I did that 4 years ago. Once you start feeling better, keep going as much as you can and help others that are new. I stopped going and now I'm the same as what you said - on pills, in w/d's or clean, but not really in recovery.
They talk about a higher power, for some people that was God, but for me, I had a hard time with that and I finally realized the power of the group was helping me. I'm not necessarily an atheist either, but I had a hard time with that. I do know that when I ask a Higher Power for help, I actually get it.
Good luck and definitely let us know how your first meeting goes.

Went to another meeting (different location) just to scope it out!
And it was wonderful! What the hell was I so afraid of?

It's so nice to go to different meetings around town.
I'm glad you went, I've been going too.
No matter which meeting you go to, you know that they are all very welcoming, understanding and they are not judging you. At least, that's the way that I feel.

That's the way it works.
Get active in the group when you feel comfortable. It is very rewarding.

Work the program and pass along your experience, strength and hope.

All the best.

Bob

The Promises of AA from The Big Book:

"The Spiritual life is not a theory, we have to live it.
If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through. We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness. We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it. We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace. No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others. That feeling of uselessness and selfpity will disappear. We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows. Self-seeking will slip away. Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change. Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us. We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us. We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.
Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us—sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them.".

Your life continues to improve as you work The Steps just like it is promised.

All the best.
