Realistic Rehab Experiences Research

Hey I hope that none of you find this offensive, personally I'm not involved with drugs or know anyone who is. I'm working on a comic and I'd like to write a realistic character who is a heroin addict. I'd be interested to hear about stories about your rehab experiences if you have any to offer! Specifically heroin, what it was like to get off, what it was like when you first entered the facility, what kind of screener questions they ask you in the beginning, etc. Even if you can direct me to a thread here that would be very helpful!

I guess a couple of questions I have are:

When you're on heroin or any other type of opiate is it possible to still live your life and do daily tasks? can you keep up a conversation? Is it possible to get off opiates without methadone? Do heroin users generally take other drugs along with heroin?

I want to write it in a respectful way because I know its no laughing matter. If you think you'd like to help me, I'd love to hear from you!
